Blue woke up one morning with a scratchy throat. That was easy enough to treat with the limited herbs she had available to her, but she underestimated it and, within a few days, the frail she-cat had developed a debilitating cough.
She was curled up tightly into a tiny black ball of fur, doing her best to get some rest but failing due to her cough.
"Miracle?" She mewed quietly, her voice very hoarse, "Can you get me some water?"

Why was he there? It was freezing down here. Even the tiny little tree knots or underneath the dumpsters they were sleeping in were warmer than this. But he had persisted. There were answers buried in these tunnels; about the world, about Glow. He kept putting off coming here, confronting Sean. But now that he was, he realized this place was a mess without a guide.
It's what led him in the complete wrong direction, to barely catch the request. This was where they were, not that Funk was surprised. But he didn't expect to stumble across them while wandering around. How many moons had it been since they abandoned the League? He didn't keep track of it. But today, he appeared in Blue's peripheral. A darkness natural to the tunnels radiated around him, but they both knew there was more to it then that. "You look a bit worse for wear, Black." He snickered.
Blue felt cold as ice when she heard Funk's voice and for a moment she was convinced it was a figment of her imagination, the result of many sleepless nights and a fevered mind. She closed her eyes and take a deep breath but all it did was make her cough more. Feebly she turned her heard toward the speaker and something about the curve of his lip made her realize that this was reality.
"What... what are you doing here!?" She asked, trembling slightly, she was a total ball of nerves. The whole reason she came to the Regime was to escape this tom not because of anything he necessarily did but because of how weak her will became when he was near. There was just something about Funk that made Blue want to give him everything she had, and he'd take it, he'd done it before.

She froze the moment he spoke. Funk held back a laugh at that. They had some good times. The kind that haunted Blue, but Funk had pretty much forgotten about. He was still careful though, not moving to her when she started to cough. For all the time that had passed, he still held that soft spot.
Funk reached back, undoing the knot on his bandana as he spoke. "Oh, this? Just swinging by to talk to Commander Shule. See if we could work out a deal." A lie, but Blue didn't need to know. The piece of cloth fell off and Funk pulled on a loop of herbs that were weaved around it. Some things were best kept with you wherever you went, and it was that preparedness that let him lay them in front of Blue. "But I guess the shamans here are a little lax. Here, it's catmint. Figured Shule could use it, but I'll let you have it instead." He'd have to have someone retie the bandana, so for now she could catch the hint of a scar on his throat.
"Give it to Shule. There's not enough for the whole Regime and there are certainly cats sicker than myself..." Blue replied valiantly, although she was eyeing the herbs with clear desire. She knew exactly how to prepare those to make herself feel better almost instantly. It was certainly tempting... but she had to hold her resolve. If she took the herbs, it was the same as letting Funk back into her life, and she had worked so hard to keep him out, "Miracle will be here soon. You should go."
She arrived in silence, not so much as a whisper of her tail telling of her presence, until Miracle's paw rested itself on top of Blue's a silent comfort as the ex-Regime Chaman gave Funk a look that hardly seemed so impressed, though she'd heard enough to see him offer the catmint. It was true, they could use them. She nudged the wet moss, placed inside a shallow rock 'bowl' if you could call it that, that she'd set by Blue's bedside, pushing it gently towards the she-cat.
The Raiser herself had more or less stepped up to help in whatever she could. She knew her way around the tunnels, and Shule trusted her without question. She herself was currently hiding the fact she'd started developing a bit of a cough that morning, but she'd survive. Blue.... she wasn't doing so well. Miracle had been avoiding telling her... but given the Regime's conditions, she was extremely worried for her wife's survival. "Keep wandering the tunnels like you are, and you'll never actually find Shule, you know. Should have asked Senescence to bring you around. She knows the underground about as well as anyone. Thanks, though, for the herbs." Miracle's tone wasn't perhaps a few shades closer to friendly than neutral, but that was her usual demeanor. She never had a particular reason to despise Funk, though it seemed they ended up with the same she-cats time and time again. This one... well, Miracle wasn't about to lose another she-cat she loved.
Despite what Blue said, Miracle pushed the dose of catmint towards her. "I won't make you take it, but it would be smart of you to." The brown she-cat stated softly.
Miracle's appearance had a visible effect on Blue: She raised her head slightly, a smile dancing on her lips. It was a look of love. She'd given them to Funk once, but now they reserved for one cat and one cat only: "Miracle."
Blue was immediately at ease. When it was just Funk and her alone, anything could happen, but now that Miracle was here, she'd be protected. She licked at the water while the two spoke. It soothed her throat for the moment but not near as much as the herb that Funk had so graciously offered. Upon Miracle's suggestion, Blue reached for the rare herb sheepishly, "I guess it's not a bad idea... I won't take much. T-thank you, Funk."
She cut off a piece of the stem and began to chew on it; however, the dried out herb irritated her throat and triggered a coughing fit. She forced some down and drank more water, although she continued to cough for a few minutes afterwards. She then laid her head against Miracle's paw and looked absolutely exhausted and pitiful. Any healer aught to be worried about her surviving the night.

The cough must have been spreading through the tunnels, Funk could feel it itching at his throat. Or maybe it was the same as getting the hiccups after hearing someone else with them, a contagion that couldn't really be controlled. Funk himself would be fine, his immune system refined after years of doing this. But that wouldn't mean the rest of Primal Instinct would. They were already starving, the only reason his own stomach wasn't growling was cause he got lucky and found the stripped remains of a deer. Vultures gave him some trouble, but it was worth it for a scrap.
He watched the pair, appearing as relaxed as ever. Did he notice the change? Yeah. But did he care? No. It was what was expected. Though he was a little disappointed Miracle showed up as soon as she did. Funk watched the rise and fall of Blue's chest, not so much as acknowledging Miracle's presence or inquiries. It was better to keep Sen out of this. But Blue. She wasn't gonna make it... and well.

"Wait."
It wasn't a request, and Miracle didn't wait to see if he paused as she attended to Blue. "I need you help, Funk. Or at least your guidance." She turned slightly. "Blue won't survive this sickness without help. If you know how to fix her problem with being unable to get nutrition from food, I need you to do it, or tell me how. And if you don't, tell me where to find a twoleg who can help her." That wasn't necessarily the only thing the brown she-cat had to say, but that was largely what she wanted to ask. Blue would probably be pretty pissed that Miracle was asking Funk for something for her, but the ex-Chaman was more concerned with saving her wife than her dying because of her pride.

Interesting. He paused, looking back at Miracle with the same expression. This time he felt a little better, now that he had a good hand in this game.
"Blockage, if I had to guess." His tail bumped against the wall, drawing her attention to it. "Digestive system is a glorified tunnel. Considering she doesn't throw up her food, blockage is likely in the intestines and not the stomach. Since time hasn't moved it, best bet is going under the claw to find out what and where it is." He spoke so confidently, but also so sterile. There was no attachment in his voice, and maybe he even knew the whole time. Funk wasn't gonna say. He could barely see Blue from his angle, her fur all but gone in the darkness. "It's possible, but risky. She's already fighting greencough, body doesn't like an invasive surgery like that when it's sick." He really shouldn't be handing out help to a Regime cat like this. He hated this place, too constricting. But Funk didn't move again right away. "I can do the surgery, but it's also possible we won't find anything. If it's her body rejecting the nutrition, there's nothing I can do."
"Miracle..." In any other circumstance, Blue would have protested this, say I'm okay, I'll bounce back, I always do. But she wasn't a liar and, besides, she was a horrible actress. She knew that her days were numbered if nothing changed. She could feel in it her bones, in each breath she took, she was growing weaker and weaker. She even had a rattle in the voice which was indicative of one thing: death. It was familiar.
"When I was a kitten, I nearly starved to death," Blue said quietly, "My mother was some loner, my father wasn't in the picture, and she had four kits to raise all on her own in the middle of a leaf-bare blizzard. What she should have done is pick one of us and left, at least that way two of us would have lived. But she didn't."
Blue's story was interrupted with a few coughs followed by a few moments of silence; telling the story was exhausting in more ways than one, "I remember that she died first, then the rest, one by one, until I was all alone." She paused again and looked away, "I was starving. First, I... I tried to each them, but they were frozen solid, my teeth couldn't break through. So instead I ate whatever I could find. Rocks, twigs, feathers... I believe the blockage likely has something to do with that. Sorry for such a long winded story, I..."
But before she could finish speaking, her body shook with another coughing fit. When it was done, Blue didn't say anything else and just laid her head on top of her paws, still wheezing slightly.

Miracle listened to the tale in silence, her expression growing a bit more concerned with each passing moment. Certainly, eating non-edible items was the cause. At least, that make the most sense, and seemed rather obvious. She turned her honey eyes back on Funk, tone blunt. "So are you going to help?" The Raiser wasn't going to accept any sort of maybes, this was a yes or no, and she wasn't going to waste her time with whatever games he might want to play.

So that was it. Blue's story at least made it more likely it was a blockage and not a sort of rejection of nutrients. It'd be unlikely someone was born just outright refusing energy, but if they did it would have been fascinating if it was Blue. Discovery right around the corner. There were stranger things in the world, so it was possible.
But Funk was drawn back to reality with Miracle's question. She was so serious, it made his lips quirk up ever so slightly. But then he looked over at Blue. If this was the League, he'd say no. They didn't have the resources anymore, he had to be far more careful. But here? He felt a scratchiness settle just under his jaw, and rubbed it with the back of his paw. "Yeah." He didn't need to think long here though, he barely had the time. Not that he would be surprised if Miracle rejected his help, but he'd do it for Blue.

Miracle nodded slowly. She wasn't delusional, she expected Funk would probably ask for something in turn, once all was said and done. At least, that's what she figured would happen, she'd be far more surprised if he did this simply for the sake of helping Blue. "Tell me what supplies you need to help, and I'll get you what I can."

That works. It was better than him going there. "Cobweb. Chamomile, but Skullcap Seeds can work too. Gumweed. Blessed Thistle. Foxglove Leaves. Poppy Seeds preferably, but if you can't find them then Goldenrod or Juniper Berries will work. Some extra water if you can manage it too." He suddenly felt how dirty his paws were, brushing them against his pelt. "If general instruction is easier, then we need things to stop bleeding, clean up the blood, keep Blue calm and give her strength to get through this. Thanks."

She noted the herbs easily in her mind, as well as his general guide. Miracle wasn't sure they had all of those, but given that treating greencough didn't require the same methods as treating open injuries like what Blue was about to have, she expected that she'd have sufficient supplies, one way or other. "I'll be back soon." The brown she-cat stated, brushing her nose gently across Blue's forehead in a brief sort of 'farewell' before leaving to go get what they would need, trusting Funk wouldn't cause too many problems in her absence.
