Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Shule hated having this meeting. She'd hoped Superior Undertow would adjust. He had promise, and he was one of the few in a high rank not already part of her family. But he wasn't as confident or forward as he needed to be. He listened well enough to her directives, but he wasn't... well, he wasn't a Commander. In her mind, the ebony feline hoped she was simply overthinking and being too critical. She wasn't in such a state as to want to just demote him from his rank entirely. More like check in and see what he needed to be more confident in his position. Though even so, she had a sneaking suspicion that she was far too optimistic about the situation at hand, and that she should start looking for someone to replace him, as much as she despised the idea of removing Undertow and replacing him in such short order.
So for now, she waited, alone, in her den, for him to arrive, quiet and stoic as ever, face unreadable as the stone walls she let her crystalline gaze rove over.
The mercenary superior had a sinking feeling in his gut when Shule called the meeting. He'd done his best to try and be a good mercenary superior, it was unusual for him to actually be in a high position before. He was much more used to blending into the background, and looking out for potential targets. And upon joining the Regime, more hanging back to learn to be a better one of the number.
Standing out and taking charge was not his strong point, and Gardenia hadn't been able to provide him much assistance as he'd initially hoped. In truth she seemed indifferent to his promotion and that had made things even harder.
But he wouldn't let down his Commander by cowering from a meeting with her, she had picked him to be her right paw. He wouldn't disrespect her in such a manner by retreating.
"You asked for me?" He asked softly as he entered the Commander's den. Taking a seat once he had entered and preparing to hear what she needed to say.
Shule gave him a short nod as he entered. No going back now. "How are you adjusting to the position of Mercenary Superior?" She questioned, the weight of her words indicating that she wasn't merely asking as a formality or greeting.
Undertow considered the question, debating how best to answer. "It hasn't been easy." He admitted glancing down. "I've never really been one to have to stand up and lead before, I've always... done most of my work in the background. But I enjoyed being your right paw and standing at your side." He admitted.
Shule nodded slowly. "Do you believe you will be able to step up into the spotlight? As Superior, you have the luxury of being able to fade into the background behind myself and Laurel, contenting yourself with work and listening more than acting. However, you won't always be able to do so. At some point, you have to take the leap and put yourself forward."
His reply certainly confirmed what she already knew. He was struggling, even if he didn't want to be.
Undertow winced. "Not... not yet," He admitted. "Perhaps." He trailed off hesitating.
"I've... not been a regime cat long, I joined after WaterClan was destroyed, and even then I was a rogue for far longer. Being one of a number... it's different than anything I've done before. And I took great pride in my place in the regime. I may not be 100% comfortable in the tunnels, but I am happy as a mercenary here."
He paused thinking for a moment. "I've gotten used to taking and following orders, filling a role. Doing everything I can for this regime. but I'm still a bit of a loner even in the regime. I can attach myself to our cause, I can work with others. But I can't inspire them like you do. I'm able to get by, carrying out your orders. But to do it myself. Carry out and declare my own orders and lead. That's... a skill I don't quite have yet."
"Do you feel this position is too much for you at this time?" Shule asked, her tone blunt, though she offered him a small smile of understanding. "Would you rather return to Mercenary, or take on a Spy role, instead of having the pressure on your shoulders of being Superior?"
Undertow let out a breath. "I admit... this has been a bit much for me. While I do think I could serve the regime as a spy, I think I would appreciate returning to a Mercenary for a time." He meowed dipping his head. "It has been... a great deal of pressure as you said. If there is still an opening for a spy in a moon or so, I think I will be in a better position to serve you and the regime well there."

"Then you shall be allowed to return to normal Mercenary duties, effective immediately." Shule answered with a short nod. "Though your time in the rank was short as Superior, I appreciate your dedication, and will be glad to see you thrive in a position you feel more suited to."
Undertow let out a sigh of relief, some of the tension leaving him as he straightened up. "Thank you for the opportunity Commander, I learned a great deal while I stood at your side. I will be sure to support your next choice as any good mercenary would."
