The mountain cast a looming shadow, one that disappeared as day turned to night. Nothing had been easy as of late, but Beastsrefrain was becoming unnerved again as the world just went on. Like things were fine when he knew for a fact they weren't. He'd barely let himself actually have any of the freedom that Swiftclan offered him. It was a shame, like he was still trapped in the gilded cage. So, just for one night at least, he would allow himself to quietly leave camp and head out into the Primal Instinct side. The grasslands were deserted, he was almost too alone as he swallowed the fear in his throat. Beastsrefrain was just walking when he stepped into something... warm and wet. He pulled his paw up, the white fur now stained red. Blood, but from what? He mentally fought his first instinct, but this was the place of following that Primal Instinct, right? So he slowly lifted his paw further before licking, briefly savoring the taste on his tongue.
Beestripe had had a long day. Mothkit was missing and he was completely frazzled. Unable to sleep, the deputy stood around outside the nursery, pacing and hoping to catch a scent though he'd followed it until it went dry dozens of times. There was movement at some point and Beestripe looked up to the sky in confusion. Was it already night? How strange. He noticed a clanmate leaving the makeshift camp and there was an urge in his paws to follow. It was so tiring not having anything to do. If he could protect this clanmate somehow then maybe he would feel better about Mothkit.
He followed Beastsrefrain until the tom suddenly stopped. Beestripe followed suit, hanging back. The cat licked his paw and Beestripe's nose wrinkled at the iron taste in the air. "What are you doing?" he suddenly called out, moving forward to reveal himself to the other cat.

Beastsrefrain was familiar with the missing kit. He spent so much time going back and forth from the nursery for Indigopastels, it wasn't a surprise. But after the events of the Sunclan raid, and unintentionally losing Brindlekit and Rosekit, he didn't know what to do. Two of his kits... well, his brother's kits, gone just like that. What was he supposed to do?
When Beestripe called out to him, he could have jumped out of his skin. How he didn't hear the deputy was a mystery. He must have been too excited about the night. Beastsrefrain turned to face him, a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach as the other came closer. "Ah, B-Beestripe. I was just going for a walk."
The tom tilted his head to the side, examining Beastsrefrain. "It's late," he commented, but then he sighed and sat himself down. "I couldn't sleep either. How have you been doing since the raid?" Beestripe realized guiltily that he hadn't checked in on his clanmates as much as he should have. Mothkit had consumed every thought. His gaze momentarily flicked to Beastrefrain's stained paw but kept his thoughts to himself for the moment.

"Yeah well-" Beastsrefrain started, but stopped himself as Beestripe sighed and sat down. He liked the night, simple as that. But there wasn't much justification to walk around in it when Swiftclan was as diurnal as Sunclan. With the deputy sitting down, he felt obligated to do the same, letting the long grass hide his stained paw. "Not that great. We still haven't been able to recover Rosekit or Brindlekit's bodies." Beastrefrain sighed, eyes closing briefly as he saw them plummet into the river. Till he remembered what happened earlier with Mothkit and his eyes shot open. "Sorry. I'm sure Mothkit will be alive when we find her."
Beestripe visibly winced. He had told himself repeatedly that Mothkit was alive. The idea of considering her ... not ... hadn't even crossed his mind. He refused to entertain it. Beastsrefrain sitting down relaxed the deputy. He wasn't completely sure he bought the idea of the tom just going for a walk, but being suspicious of your own clanmates was foolish. A clan needed trust. Still, he was curious and a bit sad. "I'm just going to come out and ask this, sorry. Are you ... thinking of leaving SwiftClan?" It didn't really matter, but Beestripe didn't want his new family to be broken up from one battle.

Yeah, not the right thing to say. Beastsrefrain mentally kicked himself. "She will be. Sorry, not good at this." He pinned his ears to his head as they got hot from embarrassment. The last thing the deputy needed were those seeds of doubt sewn, and Beastsrefrain had a hard time keeping eye contact till Beestripe asked if he was thinking of leaving. That made him whip around violently. "What? No... not at all. Why do you ask?" Realistically, it was too dangerous to go to another clan. At least with the Sunclan raid, Bloodyrondo wouldn't come looking for him or Indigopastels here for a while.
A shrug. "I dunno," came the defeated voice. Beestripe was worn out. "You're just walking around late at night. Just assumed..."
The deputy trailed off and looked at the other tom with sad eyes. He was happy this clanmate would be staying, but it was so hard to be cheerful with so much bad going on. Beestripe tried to put some pep back into his words. It wasn't fair to Beastsrefrain for him to sound all mopey. He deserved a little better than that from a cat who was supposed to guide and lead him. And the comments about Mothkit had been well-intended and kind. Yes, Beestripe liked this cat, and he wanted to clear the air.
"Anyway, I'm glad you're staying and I apologize if I sounded suspicious. I followed you 'cuz I was worried about you but now I've realized... you may not need protecting. You're a warrior."

"O-Oh..." Beastsrefrain stuttered, letting silence fill the space between the two toms. For as much as he didn't get Beestripe's concern, he also held that sort of concern when Dawnkit or Lionkit were just out playing with the other kits. Like they needed to be watched. Like they were going to wander off or disappear like Rose and Brindle did. "It's okay. It's good for you to be suspicious sometimes, but I think everyone here in Swift has each other's backs." It was romantic, but it was so much better than Sun. Anywhere besides Sun was like heaven. "I hope I don't need protecting. Otherwise all those moons training weren't worth it. Do you want to join me on my walk?"
At the silence, the deputy felt his mood lower even more. But Beastsrefrain's words lightened it back up. The tom wasn't upset with him!
Beestripe smiled at the offer and bounced back up to his paws. "Yes, please!" he said happily. Maybe he would catch a whiff of Mothkit while they were out. Probably not, but sitting around was certainly unhelpful. As bounded over to the warrior, moving slightly past him, his paw sank into something and he yanked it away in surprise.
"Beastsrefrain?" he asked, voice moving up a pitch. "What in the world is this?"

Beastsrefrain let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. It was a relief to see Beestripe lighten up. So much he completely forgot they were sitting in Primal Instinct territory. How the deputy didn't pick up on the stench of death was beyond him. There wasn't a body around, only blood and maybe other things that the moonlight could not catch. Beast slowly pulled the grass away, letting himself look at the scene. "Unlucky something that a League cat caught. Don't panic. It's not her." Somehow he maneuvered one of the claws into his open paw. It was definitely an adult cat's claw, the slick shine on it suggesting it was pulled out. "It was clearly something bigger. Whatever it was." From last he heard, the League didn't have a lot of youth, so while Beast doubted they would kill Moth, that didn't mean she wasn't there.
A chill went up and down Beestripe's spine. He hated Primal Instinct. They went against so much of what he was. The deputy considered talking to Chimerastar if he could find him and suggest moving as soon as possible. "There's no way she could have made it all the way here, anyway. Someone must have taken her. But I didn't recognize the scent near the den, and it doesn't match that of...this place."
Beastsrefrain's paw was still holding something, and honestly Beestripe didn't want to know what it was. "Let's get out of here."

Damn. Course a random corpse had to ruin Beastsrefrain adventure. He was used to Primal Instinct. Used to going there to have the same useless conversations with his father. Used to being jumped only to beat the cat that jumped him. He couldn't say it was fun. But it was... entertaining.
"Yeah, I doubt she went this way." He said after a moment, beginning to follow after Beestripe.
