"Hey Shule, I have a special surprise, it's my mumsy!" Sean said moving aside from the tunnel to reveal an auburn and white she-cat with hazy green eyes. She had a green kittypet collar and looked well for her age if it wasn't for her fading sight.
"So this is your wife then?" Eartha asked, her voice sounded much more youthful than anyone could imagine. The very tone of her voice to the attitude was absolutely enchanting in much the same way as Glowstar's was.
"Yes, she's the commander now too, smartest, hottest, strongest she-cat in all the galaxy. Took down two leaders like a lioness taking down a gazelle, it was all impressive, you should have been there," Sean laughed before it turned into a nervous laugh uncomfortable with the lack of response from his mom.

So, this was Sean's mother. If what Shule knew about her thus far was true, the Commander already despised her. And she had no reason to believe that Green being fed herbs to make her sterile by the very cat now standing before her was any lie.
Her ear twitched at the greeting, sizing up the feline before her in silence for a long moment. Likely longer than her mate would prefer, especially as the mostly ebony feline's stature didn't get any less formal and stoic as she offered a mere tilt of her head, almost invisible, as a greeting. "I am Commander Shule." She confirmed cooly, "Though Sean's already stated as much. What brings you back to the Regime after all this time?"
"Ha," Eartha openly laughed giving her son a small nudge. "You got great taste kid, a true militaristic commander. I've come to humbly request to return back to the Regime. My sight is not as great, but I do intend to work and not stay as a veteran to eat all of your prey. I was once a guider and I still got the moxy and know all to do my job."
Sean let out a breath of air, at least his mom didn't have a problem with Shule. He turned back to look at Shule hopefully, "Isn't that great? She was an amazing guider for her time and lived through the tough sexist era of the Regime. She's really looking forward to all the changes we've accomplished."
Eartha seemed to like Shule, but the inverse was clearly not true. The Commander shifted pristine white paws, her crystalline eyes not a shred warmer as she continued to observe the old kittypet. She glanced at Sean, seeing the hope in his eyes, but she wasn't going to let this one go. She couldn't, in good faith, just reinstate this cat as a Guider immediately, given her past. "Should I trust you to treat the Regime? Or should I be expecting you to sterilize our she-cats as you did to Green?" There was no love lost between herself and her sister-in-law, of course, but even Sean had to know that messing with someone's kits, or their ability to have them, wasn't something she would simply let slide. Shule was far too direct a cat to dance around the subject either. Best to get it out in the open and observe the reaction of her mother-in-law before jumping into anything. The leader wondered if she'd try and deny it, or own up to it.
"That was an ugly rumor spread by my ex husband. Yes, I gave her herbs that did make her sterile, but that was the sacrifice. At the time we didn't have all the resources you have now in the Regime. Lily was sick, she was being raised in prison for Blind Protectors sake. It was cold, damp, and infested with germs. When she got sick I gave her the herbs sparingly, but she couldn't recover so I gave her more and she got through it. If I didn't give her more herbs she wouldn't have even had a future at all. But her fathers convinced her it was malicious intent. I was a prisoner too, it wasn't like I could just ask the guards to give me special sterile herbs to torture my daughter with."
Eartha's fiery gaze simmered when she finished, letting out a sigh, "I'm sorry, I'm getting defensive, it just- it still burns me up that he could lie to her like that."
Sean pressed into Eartha comfortingly, "She's not lying, Oz was a manipulative person. He even told my mom to wait for him at the border, but he never came and she got caught."
The more she hung around, the less Shule trusted her. Sean seemed entirely attached to her, in a way that the blue eyed she-cat did not quite like. This whole situation seemed off, and it was a rare moment indeed that she might trust that which she'd heard about their youth in passing over the present she was witnessing. She turned to Sean, and suddenly, her mate would find the harsh, cold look turned on him, searching, unconvinced. "Sean, be honest. Can you say with certainty that no harm will come not only to any cat in the Regime, but to any member of the Eerie family by her paw?" She'd never really pried into her husband's past. He didn't talk to much about it, and she didn't pressure him to. Even so, she knew he harbored guilt over not helping Glowstar more in their youth, though she couldn't say for certain it had anything to do with this particular she-cat.
She hoped Sean wouldn't lie to her. Though, if what she suspected was true, he was either going to lie to help Eartha, or this she-cat was about to have her own son admitting she might harm their family. Shule had intentionally included Glowstar's side, as, given the implications, it was that side which would need to worry. And if this she-cat could hurt Green's family, then she could as easily decide to hurt Sean's, if the Commander did something she disapproved of. Shule wanted to trust Eartha, but she had a gut feeling that this wasn't quite so simple, and she had learned to trust her instincts.
Sean blinked before nodding assuringly, “Of course, heh, in fact if Pebble was still here I guarantee you they would be best friends. My mom would not hurt anyone in the Regime or any member of the Eerie family. She is a healer, it’s not like she has any mercenary talent to take down our assassin lineage,” he said genuinely.
Eartha visibly deflated a little at the mention of Pebble. She had been friends with her parents and it made her heart ache to hear she was gone. From what she heard Pebble has been a second son to Sean.
Shule gave a half-nod at his response. He wasn't lying, as far as she could tell. But his answer also glossed over her intent somewhat, and that worried her a bit. Emiko had been raised a Guider and even she had been able to take down members of the Regime. To be honest, she wanted to look into it a bit further before making any definitive judgements. Though she wasn't going to just deny Sean the chance to interact with his mother again. "You will be permitted to join the Regime." She replied after a long moment. "For this first half-moon, you will not be allowed to treat patients, but may aid Guiders in collecting and sorting herbs, and teaching the Cadets. You are family, and I trust Sean's judgement. Be that as it may, you have been away from the Regime a long time, and I'm certain you'd like some time to relax and get to know your family prior to diving back into your duties. If you are capable, be advised that hunting or hunting practice, is currently required an hour per day of all Cadets and Soldiers, regardless of rank." Shule did trust Sean, wholeheartedly. If he truly believed she would bring no harm to the family, then she chose to believe him. This gave her the chance to look into things, and get to know Eartha better herself, rather than relying purely on trust. If Sean's mother truly had nothing to hide, then this assurance shouldn't be an issue at all.
As if on cue, to interrupt this nice little exchange, the exceptionally tall feline stepped into view, lazily heading for the pair and the newcomer, her expression bored as ever. Senescence scars seemed to shine brighter in the darkness, the scent of DayClan, SunClan, and the League all mingling together into something not quite readable in her scent. Mismatched eyes of haint blue and blind violet peered at the pair, barely glancing over the newcomer as if she was hardly a blip on the Proxy's radar. "Get so desperate you're taking in any old kittypet now?" Sen questioned, though, naturally, she could tell there was far more to this than any mere cat. For one, the newcomer seemed familiar, though Sen guaranteed she'd never seen the she-cat before. Two, she could sense the tension in Shule, and well, see Sean's closeness to the she-cat. "So, you gonna tell me who she is, Sean? Or am I expected to guess?"
Eartha was about to reply to Commander Shule when Senescence walked in.
Mean while for Sean this entire time felt like the moment before a monster crashed into you. His heart had just about stopped and dread had clogged up his lungs. He wanted desperately for Shule to like his mom. He wanted his mom to like Shule too and since she did half of his heart was filled with hope, while the other half recognized that Shule was shrewd. She didn't create friendships or trust so easily especially with the family rumors circulating about his mom. However when Senescence entered he was certain he was about to have a heart attack and choked briefly on his own spit. Managing to get a hold of himself he pushed forward an optimistic smile, "This is Eartha."
Simple, straight to the point, perfect.
Eartha had appeared intimidated at first by Senescence purely from the mixture of scents swirling around her indicating she was an intruder. However when Commander Shule and Sean didn't react with hostility she remained calm as well. "I'm Sean's mother," Eartha said proudly.
"DAMMIT."
Eartha turned to look at Sean in with a surprised expression at his outburst.
"I'm sorry, that was meant to be an indoor thought," Sean said, fidgeting with his claws.
"Sean, you are not an otter trying to pry open crabs. Put your claws away, it's unbecoming," Eartha said matter of factly.
Sean sheathed his claws, he hadn't even realized he unsheathed them. That was the second time this week...

Senescence's head tilted as she watched the exchange, her eyes flashing with unnatural copper as she did so. Of the cats in the tunnels, she was the tallest. Eartha was right to have been intimidated, if her size, coupled with the scars covering her body were anything to go by. "Eartha." The League Proxy tested the name as she leaned back into a sitting position, her body relaxed... too much so, her head almost lolling as if she were a broken china doll.
The she-cat never had a natural aura about her, but whatever about her was feline, it seemed to slip away the longer she stared at the newcomer, and suddenly one was left to wonder if Sen might just kill her. "Being Sean's mother is hardly something to be proud of, have you met him?" It might not seem like it, given her emotionless, deadpan voice, especially hard to tell in this very moment, but she was teasing, and she expected her uncle to pick up on that part regardless of her state.
"The name's Senescence. I'm Lilith's daughter." It was almost unheard of for Sen to actually introduce herself as Glowstar's kit, and most definitely the first time she'd ever referred to her mother by her given name. For the sake of wanting to know the she-cat's reaction, the rust and shadow feline left it open ended whether she was adopted or biological, though it wasn't exceptionally hard to note the similarities to Green, even if Sen did take more after her father.
Sean could feel the change in the force, it many have been his imagination, but he could have sworn the darkness of the tunnel seemed to draw towards Senescence. "HA, that's a joke..." He said nervously, but the light in Eartha's eyes had shifted making him venture further, "And psh, yeah, she's her daughter, like whatever... Who doesn't have a daughter, right?"
"You never told me she had a daughter," Eartha said with an accusatory glare to Sean.
"Oh, like any of us want to gossip about that," Sean said passively.
Eartha stared right back at Senescence with an impressive unbreakable gaze. She didn't have the same power to her stare as Senescence did, but it gripped onto hers like cobra. "This is... WONDERFUL!" Eartha squealed, her paws trotting in place. Before anyone knew it in an instant she was close at Senescence's side. "A granddaughter, uh! I couldn't be prouder, you're so strong too! Ohh and your eyes," She said with a wave of emotion, "They're so determined. They remind me so much of me. So much of Lilith, don't you think?" She asked turning back to look at Sean and Shule with a teary eyed expression. She wiped at her tears, before smiling back at Senescence, "I'm so happy to meet you, darling. Tell me, did you live happily?"

Before the old she-cat knew what hit her, Eartha was thrown halfway across the tunnel, the wind knocked out of her as one of Sen's hind legs kicked her straight in the side with painful force. There were very, very few cats who could snuggle up to Senescence without getting their head unceremoniously ripped off. Eartha was not one of them, so the face her skull remained attached to her neck was unusually merciful of the Proxy. "I should think you'd know better than to assume your daughter's line would have a soft spot for you."
Senescence didn't break her stare from the older feline, though she noted Shule shifting closer to Sean, the Commander's expression neutral though she could tell her aunt was paying especially close attention to the interaction. The lace lined she-cat let her own head roll side and back, and side again for a moment before bringing it up to a more natural angle, though the distinct feeling like one was staring into the void where Sen's soul should reside had not subsided.
Sean almost couldn't watch as Senescence slammed Eartha with such a force that it sent her to the back of the tunnel. He half ran over to Eartha when he saw that she was already getting up, "I'm going to be right back mumsy, okay!" He called over to her, before somehow forcefully pushing Commander Shule and Senescence down the other tunnel.
"What is WRONG with you? You can't just shove old ladies! She is well over one hundred moons!" He whisper shouted at Senescence before moving on to Commander Shule, "And you, you're being so rude, my dad was abusive to her and worse everyone in my clan believed him over her because it was a sexist society back then." He took in a breath, "Listen, I don't know why she decided to come by now, but I do think this is good timing. Glowstar's getting married and maybe with mumsy here she can get some nice closure."
He searched their eyes to try and gauge a reaction, but when he became uncertain he continued, "I'm... Really bad with words, I'm a sweet talker, but like being meaningful I'm really bad at and I'm sorry I just shouted at both of you. But the point I'm trying to make is that when Glowstar blamed my mom for everything I just yelled at her instead of comforting her. Maybe if my mom and her can talk they can both resolve their issues. I just want to give each of them that chance, they don't have to take it."

"Sean, I know nothing about your mother except what little I've pieced together in passing. And now Senescence comes in and clearly has a problem with Eartha. Everything and everyone except you is telling me not to trust her. Maybe I'm wrong to be so skeptical, but to say what little I know hasn't been flattering is an extreme understatement." Shule wished she could just believe him, but when he gave her nothing to go on, it was hard to simply trust he was right in the face of even her own instincts.
Senescence, for her part, just shrugged. "So what? She got too close, even discounting everything I know about her." The Proxy didn't even flinch, rather, she stared down Sean easily. "Maybe Glowstar can resolve things, but I'm under no obligation to do so."
Be a better person than you are Sean. Be the adult. Don't give into this. Don't act like a whiny brat. You got this.
"I don't know what family is to either of you, but to me families family no matter what. When Adanna scarred my face I still tried to win her affections. When Abiliana left me with the kits I still tried to send a patrol to ensure her safety. When Zakiyyah joined forces with Kotori I still met with her. It doesn't matter to me if half or all the rumors everyone's said is true because she's my mom. She was always there for me and I'll always be there for her."

Shule looked at Sean. "The safety of those around us comes first. As Commander, if I think she is a danger, it's my job to ensure she can do no harm or goes elsewhere, family or not. That is why I don't invite Kotori back to the tunnels to live, just because I love him doesn't mean it's wise to risk the Regime for it, when he knowingly hurt those within it. I am giving your mother a chance because you believe in her, and I will never stop you from seeing her. And I do wish to get to know her and put my misgivings aside. But just like how I wasn't simply friends with Glowstar because she is your sister, I won't suddenly trust your mother when all signs but you tell me I should not." Her voice was soft and slow as she spoke, trying her best to convey her point to her mate. Yes. She would love to just be able to support Eartha. But that wasn't in her nature. Trust had to be earned, especially when she had reason to believe she shouldn't trust a cat before her. Even if it broke her heart to know that she couldn't just have the happy family she wanted because she had to keep the Regime safe. Because the Eeries were anything but a family where you could just expect smooth sailing.
"Are you pulling rank?" Sean asked, he didn't seem bothered by the power move. Instead his gaze looked more understanding, "I'm not going to tell you to kick out my mom, it's not in me to do that. But if you have no interest in letting her stay than don't let me stand here going back and forth with you like I have a chance when I don't. You know my love will never waver no matter what you choose, but that same kind of love applies to my mom, it's in my nature to want the best for her."

"I'm not going to kick her out." Shule answered him after a long moment. He might not have been bothered by the pulling of rank, but she was. It wasn't that she was trying to do that at all, more that she hoped, as a former Commander, he could see how she was concerned for the Regime in the first place, given the supposed history. "But I'm not going to be able to entirely trust her yet either."
"It means exactly what I stated earlier. She is permitted to join as a Guider, but will not be permitted to heal or have direct contact patients for the first half moon." Shule replied. "Provided she proves herself trustworthy during that period, she will then be given the full responsibilities of her rank. A half moon shouldn't be too difficult for her." And it would also give the Commander more than enough time to dig into Eartha's past a bit, grill Senescence on what supposedly happened, and help her understand how and when to keep an eye on her mother in law. "My personal trust will take longer to earn, but if you believe in her, then I suspect that shouldn't take too much time either."
