Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"Let's stop here for the night," he decided finally, raising his voice as he looked back over his clan. "Apprentices, start looking for some bedding, and warriors, get to hunting." Glancing at their glazed expressions, he began to suspect his cats were just as sore and exhausted as he felt, and Chim had to suffocate his sympathy for them. Traveling wasn't supposed to be easy, but what were they supposed to do? Their clan had no place to stay, they had to keep moving, and he needed each of them to help set up the camp. At least this sheltered hollow didn't look so bad.
He shook his head firmly and turned back to his medicine cats. Firetooth was already slipping out of sight, so he focused on the younger 'paw. "Mistralpaw," Chimerastar greeted as he joined her, "anything you need help setting up?"

The she-cat's paws burned as the group was finally called to a stop, pounding in time with the heartbeat in her head. All of the small she-cat's body hurt, truth be told. Her legs were so much shorter that keeping up with warrior's strides was hard, though she was certainly not to type to admit it. When Chimerastar approached, she straightened up, removing any trace of fatigue from her face. "Chimerastar," she mewed, dipping her head briefly when he stopped in front of her.
Did she need any help? Her gaze followed Firetooth's retreating form, a glint of bitterness in it. Ever since she'd been made his apprentice, the cranky tom hadn't spoken to her beyond what was absolutely necessary, and didn't seem interested in teaching her anything, instead using her as an glorified pack mule. Turning back to Chimerastar, she realized she hadn't answered him yet. "Uh, I'm good," she mewed, ignoring the dread she felt at the necessity of gathering their basic herbs just in case something happened in the night.
Looking up at her leader, it was abundantly clear in that moment how young she yet was, barely more than a kit, yet her back was straight and her expression uncompromising. "Though," she finally admitted, unable to hold his gaze when she admitted some weakness. "I could use a warrior to go with me to gather some more cobwebs. We're low and I don't want to have to try and find some in the middle of the night if something were to happen."
He didn't move when she told him she was good, remaining perfectly still other than slightly raising one brow. Moving around wasn't easy on any of them, but it must be particularly hard on the medicine cats. Prey was prey, wherever it was found; sometimes you didn't know the right places to look, but the scent never led you astray. Who knew what plants grew around here, though, and how could they carry them from place to place? He seriously doubted they were doing well, and after a moment more, she averted her gaze and told him the truth.
Chim studied her as she confessed, noting for the first time how young and inexperienced she was. Firetooth was a young cat compared to him, but old enough to know better; this one wasn't. They had just placed her into their unfair position and asked her to learn, and that must be difficult now. Chim's gaze softened fractionally as he gave her a nod. "Of course. I'll come with you. I don't have the best eyes for cobwebs, but everyone else is busy setting up camp," he replied with a touch of humor. The one-eyed tom didn't often reference his partial blindness, but he was trying his best to put his clan at ease, and someone had told him jokes worked better than biting sarcasm when it came to young cats.

(rip any reply I was going to make to this thread. I lost like, four paragraphs of text so now i'm grumpy >:c)
"I'm sure you'll make do," she chuckled, some of the tension in her shoulders releasing at his light-hearted joke. She wasn't so worried about being able to fulfill her duties when Chimerastar was right there, offering to help. Her stomach gave a growl, reminding her it would be time to eat supper when they got back. With a faint blush, she looked towards the path they took to enter the clearing. "I think we passed a few hollow trees on the way here. They should have some cobwebs...I think."
Her lack of knowledge put her at a distinct disadvantage, but she would never admit it or ask for any more help than strictly necessary. "I'm not very well versed with these clan's scent borders; Chimerastar, would you make sure I don't accidentally trespass? The last thing we need is a border skirmish on my behalf."
His ear twitched at the rumble of her stomach and he felt a pang of sympathy for her. He knew the clan was tired and hungry and most of them wanted to just settle down and rest instead of making camp, but they were trained warriors, and it was their job to care for the clan. Chim only asked a lot because he knew they could handle it, and they needed to care for the younger members of the clan. This was how clans had always worked, he wasn't being unreasonable, but he felt a shred of unease now. Mistralpaw wasn't the only apprentice out working right now, and all this walking must be taking a higher toll on them than the others. Maybe he should have waited for prey to come back to camp before he sent the young cats out; they weren't used to working on empty stomachs.
"Good," he murmured, clearing his throat and offered her a tiny, tense smile. At least the hollow trees would be close by and easy to access, hopefully, and then they could head back to camp and she could rest. "I'll keep an eye out for the scent markers. We're far from the border right now, but I'll let you know if that changes." He had done his best to avoid leading his clans into trouble by walking right next to the other clans, but the smoother terrain was sometimes closer than he liked to enemy territory. It was difficult to find a comfortable, sheltered camp that was also far away.

{ { sorry it took so long to reply! } }
Mistralpaw gave a brisk nod, sensing some internal conflict in her leader at the moment. She had her secrets, and she suspected they paled in comparison to Chimerastar's. It would serve both of them to keep the conversation light, and hopefully help to divert their attention from the gray cloud looming over the clan. Since her promotion to Medicine Cat Apprentice, she had matured rapidly, her relationship with Firetooth causing her to undergo some major soul searching. She started towards the logs she'd seen on their trip, grateful to have a clear task to set her mind to.
After their silence had lingered for too long, she searched for something to say, something light and unimportant, and instead mewed, "Do you know WinterClan's leader at all?" Stupid, stupid mouse brain. Why would she ask about that? Quickly, she added, "I just noticed they didn't come to the equinox gathering or the mountain clan gathering is all." She struggled to keep her breathing and pace steady, not wanting to give Chimerastar any reason to suspect anything.
The leader prowled by her side, on the watch for prey as well as the borders. He wasn't worried about crossing into someone else's land, the scent should warn him far before they got close, but he wanted to bring back a piece of prey along with her herbs. If he was asking his clanmates to contribute it was the least he could do to pull his own weight.
"Wintrystar?" he echoed, surprised to hear her bring it up. Chim had barely noticed her absence; in truth, he wouldn't mind if he never saw the other clan again. WinterClan had always rubbed him the wrong way. Once he'd been on the path to becoming friends with one of their deputies, Diamonddust, and she had even helped save his life. She was the only cat from their clan he'd gotten along with, though, and even then it was an uneasy alliance. She rubbed him the wrong way.
"Not well. She keeps to herself. Those cats are too proud to come down from their mountain."

"Hm," murmured Mistralpaw, not trusting her gab-happy mouth to keep shut if she said more. What kind of mousebrain blurts out the exact thing she shouldn't say? Her, apparently. Rolling her eyes in annoyance at herself, she paused next to an oak tree, scrutinized its bark, and then shook her head and moved on. She didn't bother explaining what she'd done since like as not, Chimerastar wouldn't understand or care. When they finally approached the fallen trees, she carefully picked up a stick and swabbed the cobwebs on. "I'm not being too loud, am I?" she asked, breaking the growing silence in an attempt to make it feel less awkward. "You were going to hunt, right? I've never learned to hunt or walk quietly, so if i'm too loud let me know and we can split up while you hunt."
He kept an eye on the apprentice, half-expecting her to go on, but when she dropped the subject he did as well. It must have been a mindless thought that occurred to her, something to break the silence; it would have been better if she asked about someone he knew, but there was no way for her to guess which leaders he was well acquainted with. He hesitated in the silence, then finally cleared his throat to go on about WinterClan when she suddenly spoke up as well.
"I-- oh, not at all," Chim assured her. "You're doing fine. Prey are used to hearing some sound around them, it would be stranger if we were dead silent all the time." He glanced around them with a hint of longing, severely tempted to take the invitation to go off on his own, but he resisted. "I'm here to watch out for you. I'll just catch anything if we come across it."

Mistralpaw nodded, her thoughts already wandering once he told her he was okay with her noise level. She knew the cobwebs would be up ahead, but wondered if there might be any comfrey nearby as well. The herb was almost required in every wound poultice and with greenleaf coming up she knew wounds would become much more common. She was so absorbed in her thoughts she didn't see the just off-color creature laying ahead of her in the sun, still as death.
"A-ow!" Before she realized what had happened she was left watching the remnants of a copper-colored snake slither away. Holding up her paw, she looked to Chimerastar uneasily. "Chimerastar," she mewed slowly, fighting to keep calm and failing. "I think I just got bit by a snake." Her voice was small and in that moment matched her small stature and young age. Looking up at the tom, she felt tears well in her eyes. "I don't know what kind it was either."
There was a growing silence between them, and the leader's pelt began to itch uncomfortably. He wasn't a very open cat most of the time, and indeed he had spent much of his life resenting talking to other cats at all. He thrived in silence for so long that it became a trap for him, and now he would do anything to avoid that void. Chim still wasn't used to making small talk, especially with younger cats, and he was fighting for the next conversation topic. Did he bring up her training? They had already exhausted that. He didn't want to worry her talking about how much the clan was struggling. Chim became very aware of the gap between them, not just metaphorically, but the literal cat-length he had placed between them. He noticed too late he wasn't doing his job and keeping a lookout anymore.
The orange tomcat spotted the snake and lunged too late. His paws kicked up dirt as he wheeled to glare after it, a warning growl in his jaws. It wasn't until the apprentice's words sank in that he slowly turned back to look at her. The terror in his eyes made him want to kick himself for messing up so badly, but there was no time to blame himself.
"Okay, we don't know if it was venomous, so don't panic. It might be just a bite," the leader ordered, straightening up. "Do you feel dizzy? Sit down, sit down." Chimerastar closed the distance between them and pressed against her reassuringly as he eased her toward the ground. He was doing his best not to look too worried himself: WaterClan had snakes, but he never learned how to cure their bites. The snakes back then had been too dangerous to treat, and every bite was fatal. They were in a foreign territory now, and he had to hope the snakes here were more forgiving. "If I brought the snake back, could you identify it?"
