Heathersong's stomach was deliciously full as she basked in the sun, content. Chimerastar's idea to feast with the mountain clans had been one of his best ones yet, as they both got to fill their empty stomachs and greet their old clanmates and friends. Heathersong's tail flicked idly as she daydreamed, listening to the sounds of life around her. Her kits were growing and being promoted - Mistralpaw was even Firetooth's apprentice now! They all were growing away from the dark spot that was the beginning of their lives, and Heathersong couldn't be more proud.
Sitting up, she squinted against the bright blue sky and glanced around their makeshift camp. There was still a need to hunt, but fortunately the unclaimed territory around the Mountain Clans was fairly lush with prey, and it didn't take much work to bring in enough to feed their small family. Still, any excuse to poke around FallClan was welcome for the former she-cat of Fall, so with a stretch she slipped off the rock she'd been laying on and walked towards FallClan, hoping to say hello to an old clanmate and catch a few pieces of prey.
Brownie was outside the nursery area in their temporary camp, taking advantage of her kit's nap for her to have a moment to breathe. She was extremely overprotective and bad about hovering, but with the knowledge that her daughter was safe for now, the brown she-cat was able to slip away for a short moment. Being a mother was tough, but she couldn't imagine being anything else.
The queen stretched her legs and let the sun warm her fur. She was fairly new to the clan and was still learning its members, but she caught sight of another she-cat in the camp and could remember part of her name. She had seen her around the nursery, but hadn't paid much attention, especially with her single devotion being to her small kit.
Brownie watched as the she-cat got up from a rock and went to leave the camp. Suddenly feeling a pang of loneliness - she hadn't talked to another cat besides her child in so long - Brownie called out, "Um, wait!" She was frustrated that she couldn't remember the cat's name. Heartsong...Heathersnow... Oh, it was something like that.
She bounded over to the cat, a bit embarrassed that she didn't know the other she-cat yet. "I'm Brownie. We haven't officially met." Looking back over her shoulder to reflexively check on her kit and make sure the nursery was still there, Brownie continued, "I'm sorry if I'm holding you back from a patrol or something. I was just going to introduce myself."

Heathersong stopped when she heard a familiar voice calling after her, glancing over her shoulder in time to see Brownie bounding towards her. A half-smile curled her lips at Brownie's flustered state but she nodded when the question was asked. "Heathersong...you were close," she mewed, kind laughter filling her gaze. "I know who you are, Brownie," she added, motioning towards the nursery. "We've shared a den for moons, though you're right, I don't think we've formally met. How is your little one doing?" She flicked her tail to motion for Brownie to come with her as she exited camp, deciding a walk instead of a hunt was in order.
Brownie held back for a long moment. This was the first time she'd left her daughter's side since she'd brought her to Swiftclan, and she felt like she was being ripped in half. She had joined a clan because she knew that she couldn't protect them both by herself, but it was hard to trust cats that you just barely knew. She'd lost one kit already and losing her other would surely break her. Brownie fidgeted, obviously anxious. But there were other queens and kits, so surely hers would be alright for a short walk? After all, she would never really fit in if she couldn't get to know the others. And how could she expect other cats to protect her daughter if they didn't know her, either? She made up her mind.
"She's doing really well now that we've come to Swiftclan," said Brownie after her internal struggle. The she-cat followed Heathersong out of the camp, adding, "I don't wish to leave her without me, so I'm afraid I can't stay out long. Your kits are apprentices now, right?"
Brownie was curious to get to know this she-cat that she had seen so often but knew so little about.

Heathersong noticed Brownie's hesitation and regretted her offer to walk. She should have known how hard it would be for the other she-cat to leave her one kit for almost the first time. When she finally caught up, Heathersong offered a warm smile and nodded at her request the walk be a short one. "I'm glad that SwiftClan has been good to you," she purred, enjoying the sun on her pelt after being in the nursery. "Only one of my kits is an apprentice - Mistralpaw. She was taken by Firetooth to be his apprentice and I couldn't be more proud. Galekit is still with me in the nursery. He's not quite ready to be promoted yet." She lowered her voice and added, "They all had a hard life before I found them almost dead in the snow. I think Chimerastar was right to hold Galekit back a little longer, if I'm being honest."
"Mistralpaw is a lovely name," murmered Brownie. "I'm still getting used to the ways of naming that you use here in the clans. I am very interested to see how my own daughter will grow up and find herself here." Clan life was so different from her old life. She used to sleep on comfortable bedding having her fur stroked. Now, she was sharing a den with other cats that she hardly knew. It was much colder and much lonlier.
The news about the other queen's kits was shocking to hear. Brownie's heart hurt for these kits who had suffered so much. They, like her own daughter, had eventually been lucky. "How do you think Galekit feels about being left out?" Brownie inquired. She wasn't ready for her kit to be taken from her and trained to fight, and she didn't think her kit was ever going to be ready either.
{ { sorry it took so long to reply! I'm adding Tempestkit to Heather's litter so plz ignore that I only mentioned two cats earlier cx } }
Heathersong smiled when Brownie complimented her kits' names, considering for a moment the other queen's name. It was a strange one, but not much different from some of the loners she'd met. She supposed from an outsider's perspective, their ways of naming would be weird. She considered Brownie's question about her other kits carefully - it was a question she'd asked herself many times before.
"I think Galekit and Tempestkit are a little jealous of Mistralpaw, but she has always been the go-getter of the litter, so I don't think they hold it against her for being promoted before them. She was the strongest of the litter when I found them, and took to solid food much more quickly than the other two. I hope Galekit and Tempestkit aren't upset, that they know I'll always be proud of them, no matter what they do." There was so much love in the she-cat's voice that it was impossible to know that Heathersong hadn't given birth to the kits if she hadn't told you.
"Well I, for one," said Brownie, her eyes twinkling with warmth, "think that you are a great mother. I'm sure they know just how proud you are of them."
Brownie kept following Heathersong outside the camp, enjoying her first bit of complete freedom. She stopped for a moment and stretched out, letting the sun warm her deep brown fur, kneading her claws in and out of the ground. Then she stood back up and continued on.
"How did you end up finding them anyway, if you don't mind my asking?" Brownie was unsure if this topic was off-limits. She certainly did not want to make the other queen uncomfortable, but she was curious to truly get to know her denmate.

Seeing the other she-cat's hesitance, Heathersong offered her a warm smile. "I don't mind at all," she purred, shaking her pelt out in the sunshine, appreciating the way it warmed her very soul. "It was the middle of leaf-bare, and one of the worst snowstorms I've every seen was blowing through. I had been in the territory when the snow started, and it had really started to come down before I got back to camp. I was frozen, from my nose to my toes, and was in a hurry back to camp when I heard faint mews. Some scum had stashed her kits away in a half-exposed log and left them to die in the cold, alone and afraid." True vitriol filled her voice and red filled her vision, but after a moment her pleasant countenance was back and love shone in her eyes again.
"Anyway, that's all in the past. They're here, and they're loved, and they're mine. That's all that really matters in the long run, right?" She gave Brownie a knowing look and paused for a moment to scratch a nearby tree, her claws needing the workout. "How about you?" she called over the noise of her sharpening, "How did you and your little one find us?"
{ { what is your kit's name, btw? I looked and the page and couldn't find them xD } }
"That's horrible," Brownie said, eyes flaming at the idea of a mother abandoning her kits like that. "Maybe whoever it was got separated from them in the snowstorm or got injured by some beast."
The queen brushed against Heathersong comfortingly, letting out a small purr in solidarity. "But yes, of course that's all that matters." Brownie stopped with the other she-cat as Heathersong went to a tree nearby, scratching at it. She sat down and waited, appreciating the breather even though they hadn't walked far or fast. It was her first time exerting herself in quite a while, after all. When Heathersong asked about her own kit, Brownie felt a bit sad to have to tell her own story. She kept it short. "I had two kits, actually. We were kittypets, I believe you call us. But we were brought out to the forest. By the time we found SwiftClan to join, it was only Nib and I." There was no reason for her to explain how she had been separated from Powder during a storm, her scent washed away by rain. It was crushing as a mother to know you had failed and lost your own kit. She could only imagine how Heathersong would look down on her for it.
"Ready to move on?" asked Brownie, standing up again to continue their walk just a little bit further. It was nearly time for her to want to head back, especially after having to think about Powder again.
ooc; oh NO this reply is very late, i'm sorry luc. & the kit is nib + two adopted ones MAYBE but for now just nibeventide

{ { no worries! ^.^ } }
Heathersong saw sadness in Brownie's eyes as she began to talk about her past and instantly felt her heart stop when she mentioned she'd begun with two kits and only arrived with one. "I can't imagine..." she mewed softly, returning Brownie's comfort with her own, stroking the she-cat's flank with her tail. "I'm glad you and little Nib found us, though! I can see the little one growing up to be quite the hunter!" She tried to inject some levity into the conversation, but couldn't shake the utter sadness she felt for the other queen.
"Ready," mewed Heathersong, taking Brownie's hint to move on both in the world and in the conversation. "I'm grateful to have another queen to talk to," she admitted after a few minutes of walking. "I feel like, since I didn't actually give birth to my kits that some of the other queens look down on me. I wish they wouldn't, but I guess I understand... I love my kits more than life itself, and as long as they aren't bothered by the way the other queens treat me, then I suppose I won't be either. You're feeling welcome though, aren't you?"
Brownie appreciated Heathersong's tail stroke. This was the first sign of real affection she had felt from a SwiftClan cat since joining, and the feeling warmed her heart. "It's cats like you who make me happy with my decision to bring her here." The queen smiled at the comment about Nib's hunting. Brownie would have taught her daughter herself, and she still felt weird about handing Nib off to a random "warrior" to train her. Still, it was something she would have to get used to now that she was in SwiftClan.
As the two continued their slow walk, Brownie enjoyed the pleasant air and the few minutes of silence to just relax and empty her mind. Heathersong's words cut into the stillness, but Brownie was grateful to hear them. "Heathersong," she said gently, packing sincerity into her response. "I would never think that way. You are an amazing mother. I can tell just from this walk we've had how much love you feel for your kits. And I do feel welcome, especially now."

"Good, I'm...good," nodded Heathersong, her heart growing warm at the fellow Queen's words. She knew it was only a pawful of queens that thought that way about her and her kits, but it still meant a lot to hear it said out loud. "If anyone ever gives you any trouble, let me know," she added, a fiercely protective note entering her voice. "Our clan is young, yet, and we shouldn't let any ugliness take root so quickly."
She paused, noting the distance they had gotten from camp, and motioned for Brownie to turn back around with her. "We should have Nib and my kits play sometime," she suggested, starting their trek back to camp. "I can only imagine how much fun my Tempestkit could have with another kit close to her age!"
"And the same goes for you," Brownie said warmly. "I'd stick up for you any time, Heathersong." As they turned to head back to camp, she was pleased to hear the other queen mention a playdate. It meant a lot to her that this stranger - also a mother - would trust her enough to let their kits play like that. It was probably normal in clan life, but the idea of letting Nib interact with strangers was a foreign thought for her still. She kept this fear to herself and agreed for now. "Yes, I think she might enjoy that." Truthfully Brownie had no idea if Nib would like to play with other kits, but Brownie needed to face the facts. If they were going to live in a clan now, they had to build relationships with others. It was just the smartest thing to do, and Brownie was no idiot.
