Life is a cruel joke that spares no one the humiliation. Vera contemplated this spitefully as she enclosed her maw around the rabbit's throat, snapping the cervical spine with a vicious twist of her angular head. The Nemesis figured she'd spare any soul she could from the burden that was life, a distorted perspective that was slowly forming in her mind. Since Ruslan's betrayal, Vera had not been the same. She had been a ruthless cat before, but it was evolving, impossibly, into something worse. Bit by bit, her last shreds of humanity were evading her, and she was making less and less of an effort to pursue them.
She recoiled from the rabbit, the same toxic scent wafting from its fur. Conditions were worsening -- the prey was unsafe, and the Nemesis knew that her window of time was closing.
The stares, the whispers -- they irritated her when she was in a mood like this. Best to be alone, she figured, but that was the twisted part of leadership. Being in the public eye was a constant reassurance to the league. It reminded them that they were united under her dark power, they had a direction to run in, and all laws were enforced, despite the slow descent the state of the league was currently in.
