So this is the first installment in a miniplot series that is going to lead up to a big plot in RR. Once we work out the details in this bigger plot we will be informing you all on the details. For now please enjoy this mini-plot.
RR is dealing with a bat infestation at the moment. There have always been bats in the tunnels, but here lately the bat population has increased significantly and they are starting to cause problems for the members of the Renegade Regime. Commander Mars has tasked Scouts and Mercenaries alike with killing bats that they manage to catch, but be careful! Bats are known to carry rabies!
__________________________
It had been quite noisy in the tunnels as of late. The constant squeak of bats filled the tunnels day in and day out so much that it was starting to become a real problem. The noise they made woke the tykes at night and if someone disturbed a great number of them it tended to cause the entire hoard to panic which resulted in nothing less than chaos. Mars had been wracking his brain on a creative way to get rid of these troublesome creatures for a while now while he had tasked the scouts and Mercenaries with capturing and killing the troublesome creatures, but even that had proved to be a problem. They had already lost Mercenary Hera. She had fallen ill after a bat had bitten her. He had seen rabies a few times in his life and most every incident had been related to the bats that made the tunnels their home.
At the moment he was sitting in headquarters waiting for Gardenia and Limavady to join him so that they could discuss the issue of the bats and hopefully come up with some sort of solution. This was a difficult time for the Regime as it was. The disease that had swept through the tunnels had wiped out many of their comrades including most of their tykes. He was sure that his cats were most likely scared and looking to him for answers. He couldn't tell them that he didn't know what to do either so for now he was putting on a brave face, trying to act like everything would be alright even if he wasn't sure if it would be or not.

Meanwhile, Diana was in Post Kilo feeding her four tykes. All around her she could hear the squeaks of the bats as they moved about. The noise they made day in and day out was driving her crazy. Her tykes never slept which meant that she didn't sleep and she was too worried to leave them even if it was only long enough for a quick hunt. Raya had gotten sick after trying to kill a bat that was getting too close to the tykes and if one of the bats carried that disease, there had to be more. For now she was sticking very close to Post Kilo, ready to fend off the troublesome creatures if they got too close. "If we don't do something about these bats soon, I'm going to go mad." The irritation in her voice was clear. She knew Mars was probably trying his best, but that didn't seem to be doing much at the moment.

Moody lips faced down in a frown. Limavady stalked into HQ with a glare in his green eyes. He had barely slept all night because of the constant squeaking, and it showed in his slowed pace. The brown Turkish Angora rolled up to Mars and sat down with a huff. His irritation seemed to seep into the air around him. He spoke nothing, not even a greeting, and sulked over his restless night.
"You think we can eat the sick ones? Or is that bad?" Hurricane mumbled around the broad black wing in his jaws. He'd caught it on the way to Post Kilo to visit his family, thinking it would make a good meal for them, but he didn't want to accidentally infect his entire family. The Scout didn't want to drop it right next to their kits, just in case, so he adjusted it in his jaw as he waited for Diana to answer. He brought her prey whenever he could, whether she wanted it or not, and it was always an excuse to visit the kits. He liked playing with them, though he wasn't always sure how he was supposed to talk to the little guys.
"Once Gardenia joins us we will begin." Mars had glanced up to make sure that none of the bats were going to attack them. He could see them fluttering around above their head still. It should be near time for them to go to sleep, but there were so many of them that there was at least a dozen awake at any given time. Hopefully Gardenia wouldn't be long. They needed to come up with something soon before the stress of the situation started causing infighting.

"I don't know, but I wouldn't want to find out either." Diana curled her tail around the four tykes nestled at her belly. "Get rid of that thing Hurricane." She didn't want the tykes to get up and try to eat it or play with it. She could already see Decimus eyeing the bat curiously, but he didn't dare go near it after seeing the stern look Diana was giving him.

"Please do not eat them." A worrisome mew sounded from behind Hurricane and the Regime's anxiety-ridden Chaman tottered out of Post Kilo. He picked his way through the bat-ridden tunnels to where the commander and superiors were meeting. He wasn't exactly necessary in this discussion and they most likely didn't want him there, or so he believed, but he figured it would be good to listen in. The shaggy-furred tom's eyes were wide with lack of sleep. In fact, he just seemed a bit more tattered than usual. His denim eyes fell on the Commander and Limavady, and he gave a nod that never seemed to come back up. It was obvious the young tom was exhausted, but it had gotten to the point where he was running off of the odd second-wind that hits when you've been awake for too long.
Momi's baby blue eyes peered over from where she was treating one of the tyke's cough. At least it was a cough and not a bat bite... Her gaze rested on Diana, wondering how she was feeling. The she-cat was excited for Mars' sister and the sweet tykes she was raising, but she worried about the bats being so close. "I wonder what we are going to do about these pests." She sighed, sitting next to the other she-cat.
Hurricane sighed regretfully. "We're killing so many, it would be nice to have some extra prey to show for our efforts." But he turned to carry it out and back toward the surface. Hurricane might not be overly concerned with being a proper father and being strict rather than fun, but he wasn't about to risk the health of his family with an infected bat. Still, it was a shame to get rid of a fine meal.
"It's not a waste if they carry strange diseases." Diana's retort was sharp. She couldn't see how Hurricane could even think of feeding these miserable creatures to their tykes. Bats were never safe to eat since it was hard to tell which ones were sick unless they bit someone. Her gaze flicked over to Almast. The tiny white she cat was curled up in her nest looking uncomfortable and nervous. The bats must be putting her on edge. At least Diana knew how to kill the bats. Almast had no combat knowledge whatsoever.
"I'm here, I'm here..." Gardenia's annoyed growl carried her voice across the tunnel leading into Headquarters even before the Commander or Scout Superior could see her. Stepping into the light, it quickly became clear why she sounded so tense. Her blonde fur was a complete mess; strands and spikes sticking out from every which angle, while her normally bright and determined honey eyes were crusted and bloodshot from a clear lack of sleep. Lumbering into the cave with heavy pawsteps, she glanced over at Limavady, who seemed just as worse for wear as she was, and gave him an understanding nod. "Sorry I'm late, Commander..." she sighed, dipping her head respectfully to Mars, trying to stifle a yawn. "I've been...up all night...chasing bats away from the Veteran's cave..."

Primus-tyke whined as he buried his head into Diana's pelt. The screeching of bats seemed to get louder and louder each night, and the moon-old tyke couldn't remember the last time he or his brother had gotten a full night's sleep. Tossing and turning in a poor attempt to take a nap, the fluffy black tom finally gave up and rolled over to face upwards. Staring at the faces of his parents above him, his golden gaze flickering over to the bat resting in his father's paws. "Momma...Papa...When are the bats gonna go away? I'm tired..."

Limavady snorted and squinted at Gardenia. "Took you long enough." He scratched behind his ear and moodily shifted his gazed through the rest of leadership. He was a Superior, but he wasn't much of a morale booster like the others might be. His words and attitude were especially sharp in the morning, and he didn't appreciate that he was going to have to teach others how to kill a bat properly. He wasn't a very patient tom for that in the first place.
"I've never seen an infestation this bad before honestly. We've always had bats, but this is completely different than before." Mars would still glance up every now and then to make sure none of the pests were going to bit them, but for the most part he was focused on Limavady and Gardenia. "For the time being, we've managed to make a dent in their numbers around Post Kilo, but that is because the Mercenaries and scouts are working nonstop to keep the raisers, tykes, and origins safe. "We need to find a more efficient way of dealing with the bats. Otherwise we're going to be dealing with this for a very long time."

"I know you're tired. The soldiers are working very hard to get rid of the bats. All we can do until then is be patient." Diana's voice was somewhat gentle. Her tykes were too young to be missing as much sleep as they were. Little Decimus-tyke was curled up with his paws over his ears. Hopefully this would all be over soon. She honestly wasn't sure how much more she could take.

Limavady grumbled. Haunched over, he closed his eyes, trying to think of something. His ears pricked. After a few moments of bats screeching and chirping, he mewed, "Most of them are near Post Echo. They know we keep our food there." The drowsiness almost took him over, so he peeled his green eyes open once more to his Commander. "Perhaps we should poison them the way they've poisoned us."
"I suppose its worth a try, but we would have to be sure that everyone knew which prey had poison in it and which didn't." He didn't need any more death at the moment. Morale was at an all time low already. If they could get rid of these bats, perhaps it would be the boost everyone needed.
The she-cat snorted at the Scout Superior's sarcastic attitude, but didn't say anything in retort. In all honestly, she was too tired to think of something witty to reply with. Instead, Gardenia listened closely to the conversation, trying her hardest to keep herself awake and focused. Poison did seem like a good start, but... "Leaf-bare is fast approaching," the Mercenary Superior pointed out. "Would it really be wise to waste some of our hard-earned stores just to kill some bats? What if we don't have enough food left to get us through the winter? We need to be sensible about this."

"Bats eat each other if its convenient," Limavady stifled a laugh, "so we can just stuff a few of the unlucky ones with poison berries. Pile 'em near their cave. Watch 'em drop like flies." He smiled at the thought.
"We would just have to be careful. We don't need anyone else contracting that disease. If anyone gets bit, we will have to quarantine them. We should also be sure to spread the word to not eat these bats." Mars was wary at this point. He didn't want to see anyone else die the horrible death that Raya had faced. He'd seen it before of course since bats were not uncommon in the tunnels, but it was never pleasant to see. "If we could just thin their numbers some, we might be alright. "Or perhaps if we could herd them into an unused tunnel, we might be able to collapse it and trap them there." He wasn't sure if that would work really, but it was an idea at least.
"Have the Guiders figured out if they're edible yet? If they can make a decision of that, hunting them down might end up serving as a benefit to us," Gardenia offered, her focus completely set on the cold months ahead. Being as young as she was, this would be her first Leaf-bare since she was a newborn, and she was determined to not let the Regime suffer as she'd heard other clans had in the past. "Easier to add them to our food storage instead of them taking from it."
"It is too risky to eat them when we can't tell which ones carry the disease. If we could figure out a way to tell them apart then we could hunt them for food." That needed to be the next task he gave the scouts. If they could just turn this problem into an advantage, then the Regime would be well fed through the winter, but the thought of eating a sick bat was a scary one since no one knew if eating one would give them the strange sickness that had killed Raya.
