Jetfire lunched herself across the river stones once more, jumping from one to the other across the river until she had crossed over to the other side. With her injuries mostly healed, the she-cat had been throwing herself into getting back into shape and trying to learn the skills that her apprentice pregnancy had prevented her from learning. A long jagged scar still parted the fur down the center of her belly, but she was a far cry from the starved cat on death's door that had first arrived in SwiftClan moons ago. Her fur was sleek and shiny, and even though she was still lean she didn't seem sickly any longer. There was a spark back in her gaze, a determination to overcome her image as a victim. She was a survivor. Cleaver
The quiet rumble of the river filled her ears as she grew near, and her mouth parted to let the scents of prey wash over her. This section of territory was unfamiliar to her, deeper within the former WaterClan land than EarthClan; it was recovering, but she still worried it was not ready for cats to return. The few traces of prey see had seen were all small animals - birds and mice - and they were always the first to move into empty land. Still, the scent of prey near the river reassured her that there might be some lurking nearby.
As Breezestep emerged from beneath the bowed willow, she spotted her daughter-in-law racing across the stones and stopped to watch. She didn't know the she-cat well at all; she had still been in SunClan when Jetfire was made an apprentice but had seen her only in passing, and even now that they were in the same clan again, she rarely saw her without Firetooth around.
She headed toward the stones to greet her, calling quietly ahead of her, "your balance is very good. Have you been practicing long?"

Each step she took over the river was another step towards her goal, every moment spent training was a moment growing stronger. The smooth river stones felt strong beneath her feet, even as the shifted and moved under her weight and the current of the river. Just a bit father. She repeated internally, until she reached the last of the stones, with nothing but water stretched out before her. She came to rest on the last of the stones, all four feet close together on the small surface, unaware that she was being watched from the river bank.
It was only when Breezestep spoke, that Jetfire turned to see the older she-cat standing there "Breezestep" she greeted, turning carefully on the stone and hopping back across to where the water met land "I have been working on it" she admitted, landing beside Breezestep with a light thud "I still have lot of work to do. When I was younger, I could have done this with my eyes closed, but now have to think about my movements more carefully"
"I could do a great many things in my youth that I can't today," she agreed. Flashing the she-cat an amused look, she tacked on, "not because of my age, mind you. I'm just not as reckless as I was when I was younger and thought it wise to take all sorts of risks. RAcing through the stones with my eyes closed would be one of them." Sadness tugged at her smile; it rarely left her, but today there was a wistfulness there, a nostalgia.

"The only risk here, would be getting my pelt wet" she chuckled, the water here was shallow. Even if she fell into the water, all she would have to do is stand up. She sat, her long tail curling over her paws "so better to practice here, than in the heat of the moment when it is needed. Firetooth was right though, it is going to take a long time to get my body healthy enough to take the strain of any sort of intense training. I haven't been out here long, and I am already getting exhausted, so perfect timing on your part"
She blinked. Jetfire was right. Breezestep wasn't a drypaw, she knew how to swim, but she avoided water when possible. She would never forget the fierce tug of flood currents dragging at her fur, but her aversion went back further than the floods: it was an old habit to accommodate her husband that she'd never left behind.
She hesitated, then refrained from another comment about training or exhaustion. She was all too aware that she didn't make good conversation, she was too out of practice, but that had to change if she was going to be a deputy now -- an honor she still could not fully wrap her head around.
"I am glad to be a distraction, then," Breezestep replied instead, and she was. It was better than having to join her on the stones. "How have you been, Jetfire?"
