Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Still crowned in his ring of dandelions, the young medicine cat made his way over to the freshkill pile with a rumbling belly. Vulturepaw nosed around until he found his favorite; a nice plump river vole, fat from the green-leaf offerings. Plucking the rodent out of the pile, he turned back to head towards his den entrance. It was shady but still held the full view of the camp. He liked to be able to see his Clanmates, even though he wasn't the most social with them.
As he ate, instead of crunching through the tiny bones, he did his best to eat around them. As he spat them out, the skeleton began to form. His rough tongue helped scrape away most of the flesh from the bones. There were only a few left that he needed to save to complete his almost fully articulated vole pile that was stored in the depths of his den.

"Accidents happen unfortunately," Redflame was saying to Crowpaw as they came into the camp. The black and white apprentice was walking on three feet while holding up the fourth, his right front paw. "You'll just have to learn to watch where you step. Good, there's Vulturepaw at his den," she said when she saw the young medicine cat.
The pair made their way across the camp and stopped before the medicine cat. "Excuse us please," Redflame began. "I hope you're through eating. Crowpaw twisted his paw while we were out patrolling. He says he can't walk on it."

Vulturemalice looked up and saw Redflame and the limping Crowpaw. "Just finished actually," he meowed, pushing his bone pile towards the back. "Step in a rabbit hole or something?" he asked, motioning for the apprentice to lay down on the mossy bed.

"Yeah, something like that," Crowpaw meowed feeling embarrassed. "I was chasing a squirrel ... and I would have caught it too if it wasn't for that stupid hole." He held up his paw to Vulturemalice to examine it. "I felt something pop in it when I fell."
"If you had paid closer attention to my instructions you wouldn't have had to chase after it," Redflame mewed softly. Then directing her discussion to the young medicine cat, "So how has things been going for you since your promotion?"
"A pop eh?" Vulturemalice asked, running his paws over the apprentice's paw. He felt the heat from the area, and some mild swelling. While talking to Redflame, Vulturemalice tugged lightly on each toe. "It's been alright, it's hard not having someone to guide me with every step, but that's what happens when you're done being an apprentice." He gave a pointed look to Crowpaw. "I promise it's always best to listen to your superiors," he meowed, hoping to have distracted the young tom when he found the dislocation.
"Seems you got yourself a bit of a sprain, and a dislocated toe," Vulturemalice meowed with a flick of his tail. "Easy fix, though you'll be off of that foot for a few days."

Crowpaw winced slightly with each tug, more in anticipation of an expected pain than actually a real one. But when Vulturemalice found the dislocation the pain was real. He gritted his teeth tightly together to keep from hollering. He was going to be a warrior soon and didn't want cats to label him a 'cry kitten'.
"But I'll miss my first assessment!" the black and white apprentice complained. He definitely didn't want to fall behind his brothers and sisters in his training.
"Doubtful, you'll be sore for a few days," Vulturemalice said, looking the paw over with satisfaction. "The worst part was the sprain, your toe is fine, if not a little tender."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Aug 4, 2021 18:31:01 GMT -5
"It sure is," Crowpaw agreed with Vulturemalice. "Tender, that is. Can I stay in my own nest or do I have to stay here in the medicine den?" His eyes strayed briefly over to the apprentices den with a hopeful look. He didn't want to look weak to his denmates by having to sleep in the medicine den. "I'll be careful," he added.
"As careful as you were on the hunt," Redflame muttered softly to herself. Crowpaw didn't catch what she said. His eyes were on the young medicine cat.
"Your own nest is fine," Vulturemalice said with a chuckle and shake of his head. "Just don't get too rowdy with anyone in there. If I hear yowling, I'll come running and you don't want me in there." He added the last part with a stern look, brown arched and lip curled slightly. He had learned that a little dose of fear every now and again was a good thing.

"You can count on me!" Crowpaw meowed earnestly. "I'll make sure there's no yowling or carrying on." The last thing he wanted was to be reprimanded by the medicine cat in front of all his peers. "I'll be going now." He limped off in the direction of the apprentices den.
Redflame stood next to Vulturemalice watching Crowpaw leave. "I really think you put a scare in him," she mewed. "I don't think you'll have to worry about him." She then stretched her body causing her tail to quiver. "Is there anything I can do for you?" she asked. "How's your bedding? Does it need to be refreshed? Or maybe you need a warrior to come with you to the herb meadow?"
Vulturemalice had to suppress a smile as he watched Crowpaw scamper away, remembering when he used to be that carefree. Though he was never jovial and expressive, he remembered what it was to be young and happy and only having to worry about chores and when the next patrol was.
When Redflame spoke, he blinked fondly at the she-cat, grateful for the offer. "Actually," he meowed, clearing up bits of herb debris, "I was about to head to the elders den to visit Greythorn and clear out bedding. You're welcome to join if you don't have anything else to do."
At the mention of the former medicine cat, a sadness fell over her. Redflame of course had heard the story, the whole clan had actually, about the terrible accident. She never had much dealings with the grumpy cat but still felt bad for him. It would be an awful thing to lose one's hearing.
"I'd be happy to help out," she replied although she felt awkward facing the former medicine cat. What would I say to him? Now that was a mouse-brained thought! she mentally chided herself. But that brought up a question she hadn't thought of before now. "Um... since he can't hear, how can you talk with him? How can he understand?"
(FYI - In another thread, I mentioned his mother, Gentlebreeze, had been teaching him how to lip read but it's still in the early stages.)
Vulturemalice offered a small grunt of sympathy at the she-cats nervousness. "A few cats have been working on lip-reading with him, but I want to come up with some signals to help things get across quicker," the young tom explained, trotting across camp to the elder's den. On his way, he picked up a fresh vole, knowing that the elderly tom would probably be hungry.

Redflame followed the medicine cat over to the fresh kill pile and then to the elder's den. "It must be very hard for him," she mewed. She couldn't imagine what it would be like loosing her hearing. It never occurred to her how important her ears were. Not only could she not hear her clanmates' conversations, she'd be helpless out in the woods. There'd be no snuffling sounds of prey in the undergrowth if she wanted to hunt nor any warning sounds from an attacking enemy. Even though it was warm, a shiver ran down her spine.
Graythorn was asleep in his nest inside the den. His mother had gone out for a walk in the territory to stretch her legs and his other denmates were gone somewhere leaving him alone in the den.
Very lightly, Vulturemalice brushed his tail down his former mentors side, hoping to not startle him awake. The young medicine cat was still finding a hard time of not alarming the old medicine cat when he approached him from behind, or trying to wake him. "He might lash out," Vulturemalice said quietly to Redflame, taking a small step back.

The sweet sounds of birdsong filled the air as Graythorn walked through the wildflower and herb meadow. The wind was rustling the flowers and grasses and the small sounds of ground creatures scurrying around made his stomach growl. He crouched low waiting for the sounds of the mouse to grow louder as it came closer to his hiding spot. Muscles tensed in anticipation of his lunge and then suddenly some cat's tail brushed against his side scaring away his prey. He leaped up and faced the cat. "Look what you've done!" he growled. "You chased away my meal..." His voice trailed away as he realized he wasn't in the meadow but in a den inside the camp. In front of him stood his former apprentice and Redflame. "Sorry," he grumbled his apology. "I was dreaming." Reality hit him once again. In his dream he could hear but now...
He sat back down in his nest with a huff. "At least I can still hear when I dream. What do you two want?"

Vulturemalice couldn't help but to let out a soft purr at his grumpy former mentor. Nothing had changed much in that department it seemed. "Just here checking on you," he said slowly, making sure his lips were in Greythorn's line of sight. "Any pain?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Sept 12, 2021 16:38:43 GMT -5
"Yes, right here," he replied patting a fore paw against his chest and over his heart. He was able to make out most of what Vulturemalice had asked. "But I don't know of any herb that can stop the pain of sadness," he grumbled. Sometimes Graythorn wished the storm had taken his life instead of his hearing. At least then he wouldn't feel so useless to his clan. He'd be a member of StarClan helping to guide those who were still living.
Feeling very awkward, Redflame looked down and scuffed a paw in the dirt. She didn't know what to say or how to act around the former medicine cat. She turned her eyes to Vulturemalice hoping he'd have some words of comfort for Graythorn.
"I'll try and find you some lavender," Vulturemalice said before touching his nose to his former mentors ear. With a small, sad smile, he nodded goodbye and backed out of the den, flicking his tail for Redflame to follow. "You up for a little herb gathering?" he asked her once they were out in the clearing. He had used the last of his lavender for his own aching heart. Part of his pain was from his ailing mentor, and the other part was an ache he never knew he would ever experience as a medicine cat. Even thinking about the dappled tom sent a sharp pain through his chest, but he never let it show.

Graythorn waved his tail to signal his 'good bye'. Lavender? I don't have a fever or sore throat, he thought. Oh, he probably wants me to sniff them. He doubted it would work but he'd humor Vulturemalice if he came back with some fresh flowers.
Redflame was more than willing to leave the elder's den and the sad tom's presence. "Sure, I'd be glad to help," she replied. "It's such a shame Graythorn lost his hearing. I can tell it's really bothering him. Can lavender help his ears get better? If it does, I'd be willing to bring him back a whole meadow full of those flowers."
