Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"Nothing can help his ears," Vulturemalice said sadly with a small shake of his head. "The blast blew out his ear drums, so unless they heal on their own, he won't have his hearing ever again." Memories flashed across his gaze of that moment causing him to flinch back into himself. "But weaving the lavender into his nest will help with the depression. It's a calming herb, I've used it many times for myself and others. Best fresh, but the dried heads can be mixed into other poultices."

The red coated warrior's eyes were round with astonishment. She knew Graythorn lost his hearing but didn't realize the extent of his injuries. She felt truly sorry for the grumpy tom. I'd act that way too if I couldn't hear anymore.
"Is there any lavender around now?" Redflame asked knowing that certain plants bloomed at different times. She was always happy to see dandelions blooming in Newleaf mainly because she knew that Leafbare was just about finished. The fields would be full of their yellow blossoms but during Greenleaf less of the flowers were around.
"There's a patch that I keep in the garden, I know it's a common flower for decorating and making wreaths," the medicine cat shrugged. "I try to keep it around."

"That's good," Redflame replied. "I hope it helps Graythorn." She had never used the flower in any wreaths she had made. "Dandelions or buttercups are my flowers of choice for wreaths. I guess I just like yellow because it seems so cheerful."
The mention of dandelions almost made the young tom flinch. "It can be, yeah," he muttered halfheartedly. "I like babies breath a lot now for flower crowns. They're small and cute and the white is really nice and pure." He hoped she hadn't noticed his aversion to the golden weed. "Buttercups are nice too, I like the way they smell."

"Yes, their scent isn't as strong as some flowers," Redflame responded. She could tell by his tone of voice he didn't really care for the yellow flowers that much. "Babies breath is nice but I prefer most colors over white. White seems so plain by itself but I think it's nice when mixed with other colors." She wondered how much farther they needed to go to get the lavender. "So...if we collect extra lavender, could we make a crown for Graythorn too? Maybe it'll help him to be less grumpy as well as sad."
The brown and white tom let out a small laugh, giving a shake of his head. "I would love to see Greythorn in a crown. The purple would compliment his fur, would it not?" he asked with a small smile, suddenly finding himself actually enjoying the she-cats company. "He's going to be so cross if I come back and plop one on his head."

The picture Vulturemalice painted with his words tickled Redflame so much it made her laugh. She could just visualize him sneaking up from behind the old medicine cat and placing a crown of flowers on his head... and then his reaction! They'd both be extremely fortunate if they escaped with their fur intact!
"That would be a sight to see, for sure!" she laughed. "I forgot I never saw Graythorn wearing a flower crown. I suppose he wouldn't change now." In fact there was a time she could remember when making and wearing those crowns wasn't too popular with any cat. It became a more acceptable practice shortly after the institution of the Garden Keepers.
"I'm sure if we begged, he might consider it," the brown and white tom said with a smile, starting to feel more like himself the more that he talked with Redflame. It was nice to have a friend outside of his grumpy old mentor, and Sunpetal who was a constant burr, affectionately in his side. "What it like being a mentor?"

"It's actually fun, really," Redflame replied as she thought about Soulpaw. "It gives me a good feeling that I'm helping SummerClan to continue on. It would be awful if our clan would ever die out." The thought sent an involuntary shiver down her spine. Pushing away that thought, she continued, "Why do you ask? Are you considering taking on an apprentice of your own soon?"
He gave a small shrug, continuing to walk along side the she-cat. "Not particularly, but it's something I need to be prepared for in the future. You never know what could happen, like with Greythorn for example. I know Sunfreckle is back, but she never had a lot of medicine cat training to begin with. I just don't want something to happen and leave the Clan without a medicine cat." The words spilled out fast, solidifying a fear the Vulturemalice didn't even know he had.

It was true what he said and she knew accidents could happen at any given time. "It was bad what happened to Graythorn," she agreed. "But we can't go around living in fear of the future. We'd never get anything done." She gave him a reassuring smile. "I'm sure you'll know when the time is right to take on an apprentice. It was different with me, though. I didn't have any say so in becoming a mentor, I was just chosen by our leader." She spotted some purple flowers coming into view. "When you do pick an apprentice, will StarClan tell you which cat to choose?" She had no idea how medicine cat apprentices were chosen. Regular apprentices were routinely promoted once they reached six moons.
"I think it's whenever someone shows interest in becoming a medicine cat, and I can tell they have a knack for herbs and healing," Vulturemalice said with a shrug, spotting the flowers as well. "That's kinda how it happened with me, I wasn't cutting it out in warrior training so I started something else and it ended up working out well."

"Oh, so that's how Graythorn chose you," she mewed thoughtfully. She had always been drawn to a warrior's life so caring for plants and flowers were never a priority for her. Not that she she didn't enjoy them though. Some made the fields very pretty and colorful while others smelled so nice. "You might find an apprentice with the Garden Keepers when you want to look. They're already predisposed to working with plants."
"There's one, Cranepaw," the tom started with a roll of his eyes and shake of his head, "who has been very insistent, but there's something she's lacking and I don't think she would make a good medicine cat. And now that Sunfreckle is back, I felt weird about, I don't know, taking her spot?" His words started out slow, but ended in a rush with his eyes wide in confusion.

"I wouldn't worry about that," Redflame replied sympathetically referring to Sunfreckle's return. "She made her decision to give up her position when she left. Besides I trust Graythorn chose you with StarClan's blessing. He was a wise medicine cat, if not grumpy. And also," she continued. "I don't know what all you medicine cats do at the MoonCreek when you meet with StarClan but surely they would have said something when Graythorn took you there as an apprentice if you weren't the right choice?" The red furred cat looked hopefully at Vulturemalice.
A faint heat rushed the young toms cheeks, causing him to duck his head. "I am very lucky to have been his apprentice, and I am even more lucky to be able to serve SummerClan," he said softly.

Redflame was undaunted by Vulturemalice's evasive reply not that she expected him to tell her about the secrets medicine cats share at the Moon Creek.
"We're lucky to have you," she mewed honestly. "You and Graythorn must have gotten along together pretty well. Not many cats that I know of ever got close to him because of his abrasiveness." The only ones she knew were close to him were Pantherclaw, his sister, and Gentlebreeze, his mother.
