There were rumours on the grapevine all the time. Most of those were useless really, who was in love with who, who had some kits in what clan, who was sleeping with who...but occasionally, there was a rumour that caught his eye. Bermondsey frowned. He had assumed that the rest of his family had died years ago other than the few he still had with him. Surely most of his siblings had left Primal Instinct, but the couple who had stayed...he never really knew what happened to them.
So turns out Bela had a kit, huh? He was both surprised and conflicted. How did he feel about this really? On one hand, there was a sense of relief, that not all of his bloodline was gone, but at the same time, he knew nothing about Alexandria, and he was more wary of his family than anything. After all, it wasn't like they were friends. He had never gotten along with his siblings; Daireanne was sadistic and Bela always had a mean streak, and his younger siblings had drifted away pretty quickly, and after what had happened between his siblings and their parents...well, meeting his family was a dangerous game.
Still, he caught sight of the other cat and there were things to do, borders to secure. "Alexandria, yes?" he spoke, not giving her a second glance, "you're on patrol with me today. There's a dog disrupting one of the alleyways and we need to get rid of it. Any objections?"

Alexandria had faded into the background. Her family, as far as she was aware anyway, gone. Her sister dead or disappeared somewhere, driven practically insane by Sen's training methods when Desiree was younger. The black panther huntress would have destroyed anyone for her family, but what could she do when there was no one left to destroy?
The frosty eyed she-cat didn't know enough of Bermondsey to understand he was family. To her, he was just this Warden she'd never spoken with, as far as she could recall. She lifted her head, peering at the tom as he neared, then shrugged. "Sure." There wasn't much to say to that but an agreement, and she rose to her paws to follow.

He didn't know how to approach this. Unlike his father, Bermondsey didn't have the gift of the gab. He was awkward in even the least awkward situations, often too blunt or twisting his words too much that the meaning didn't even make sense. There was no way she'd remember him, right? He had left the league long before their brood was born. Of course, that didn't mean Bermondsey wasn't the type to investigate. He might not be good at approaching conversations, but he was the kind to read others like a book all the same.
"I hear you're one of the few cats who've seen it all in the League; you're one of the ones who survived all the moving the league has done," he started as the moved through the city, the silence more stifling than his words, "mind catching me up on what I missed?"
"How far are we talking? You've got a few good years to go over." Alexandria answered passively. "As far as a true look into history, you're probably best asking the Eeries, but most of them have left the League by now, for one reason or other."

Eeries. He had heard the name a couple of times. A few cats have mentioned them, explained who they were. Glowstar and their kin, no? Or well, he had known her briefly in the past, when his father was still alive. They had been friends he assumed, working together on the same team one way or the other. Them being gone defeated the purpose, and emphasized what he already knew.
There were few from the old days still left in the league.
It'd be easier really, if he just said it straight up rather than implore, but Bermondsey wasn't the type of cat who liked giving away any detail of himself. He hated being perceived in any way possible.
"I remember someone mentioning your mother of being of some importance," he spoke once more, "what was her name? Isabella? Brielle?" His voice was a sort of vague curiosity, as if ignorant of it all, "perhaps she knew mine."
In any other age, Alexandria would have obeyed without question. But in this case, Bermondsey's prying seemed strange to her, like he was trying to reveal her hand, rather than his own. He was being too obvious about it, and she suspected he knew more than he let on, so she let her gaze wander. "My mother? No, she wasn't especially important, why are you wondering about her, of all cats?" Two could play at that game.

He knew he had been too impatient. It was a weakness really, his inability to smooth talk others into doing exactly what he wanted. It was a talent some of his siblings had, but certainly not one he had inherited himself. His tail lashed once, a sign of impatience. He didn't want to say it, to express exactly what it was that he wanted from her without at least knowing who she was.
Bermondsey didn't trust others.
Still, it was clear she saw through his facade. His green eyes peered at her, scrutinizing the she-cat as if picking out whether she deserved the truth or not. "I just want to know whether I knew her or not," he replied simply. It was the truth, even if it wasn't the full length of it. "I don't know a lot of cats here anymore and we live in a strange new world now, maybe I just want to know if there's anything that ties me here anymore," there was almost a tone of vulnerability, whether it was real or not was the question.
Alexandria didn't trust others either. Especially not a Warden who was prying into her life for seemingly no reason. "Oh? If you're from here, that's different. What was it like in your time?" She avoided the question by twisting it back around to him, something that could easily be passed off as mere curiosity to find out what the League was like in a time presumably before even her. "Maybe that'll give me a better starting point."

Gods, she was...infuriating. Surely she was one of them if they could spin so many circles around the same topic. It was clear that this was a game to her, like chess, they were moving one piece after another. He gave her a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “It was back in the old forest, before we moved to the city. The ruins I suppose. You don’t happen to remember that do you? I don’t think I remember who the leader was back then, though I hear the league moved once Vera became Nemesis.”

"Are you sure you should be a Warden if your memory is that bad?" Alexandria mused, once again not answering the question. "You seem especially preoccupied with the past as well. Why don't you just tell me what you really want to ask, and we can stop with this game, as fun as it's been. Or we can just dance around it for the next two sunrises, I'm perfectly okay with that."

It seemed as if she had finally decided to cut through to the chase. His green eyes regarded her with a certain curiosity rarely seen in the warden's expression. "I suppose I could," he drawled as if he was reluctant to do so, "I simply want to know if your mother was my sister. Belarus-Allegria? Strike a bell?"

She wasn't exactly surprised, but then again, she also didn't really expect that Bermondsey was family. She expected a friend, or maybe some jilted lover, she didn't know. Regardless, Alexandria nodded slowly. "Yeah, that's my mother alright. Of all the things to forget, I wouldn't have thought it would be an uncle. Or maybe mom just never thought you were worth talking about."

His lips twitched into a dry amusement. "My older siblings never thought we were worth their time, so I'm not all too surprised there," he replied with a shrug, "but as we can see, they're all dead and I'm not, so I guess even my parents make their mistakes in entrusting their legacy to them, no?" His ear twitched, as he sat, his tail swept neatly across his paws, "though I'm surprised to hear some of us escaped unscathed. Are there any others left of your litter?"

"No. I had one sister for the longest time. Senescence, Agamede's adoptive mother drove her insane during training many seasons ago." Alexandria answered, sounding a tad bitter. "I don't know what that former Proxy did to her exactly, but Desiree was never the same after that. She disappeared some time ago. She was the last of my siblings left."

He remembered the name Senescence but it was a memory from another lifetime, one that barely remained. "Driven insane by training huh?" he murmured, his voice clouded with a strange emotion as if remembering something. Gods, would the curse follow this bloodline for the rest of eternity?
"–and you? Any...neurosis I should be aware about?" he asked dryly, the tension crinkling around his eyes, as if both concerned and wary at the same time and pretending as if he wasn't either. He felt sympathy for the stranger he called kin, but also wariness lest they decided to turn their claws against him instead.

"Not more than average for living in the League and losing one's entire family." Alexandria snorted. "Haven't snapped like some cats and gone on a murdering spree yet. At this point, that's unlikely, what more do I have to lose?"

Bermondsey had a bemused expression on his face. "Are you looking forward to?" he pointed out, blinking at Alexandria, "surely you won't be the first to lose your sanity here, and the league's always been a free-for-all for any whims you might have. Apparently, it's a family trait, to go unhinged."
Post by Honeystorm on Sept 24, 2021 0:21:11 GMT -5
"Looking forward to it? Does it really matter if it's the inevitable? Most everyone in the League loses grip on reality in some form or other while they're here, no point in trying to change fate." Alexandria shrugged. "Might make life finally interesting."

She was right of course. His whiskers twitched once in amusement. "Surely there are better ways of entertaining yourself than going insane," he shrugged, "to be honest I'm surprised you stayed. Your siblings are all gone, what's keeping you here?"
