Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Was this a dream? It had to be. Or maybe Deal was simply dead, after all, one could see the stars threaded into Timerous' fur, the slight transparency of her frame in StarClan's realm. The small she-cat still had that same smile for him as always, so bright and full of life despite her death. As if what she'd gone through hadn't broken her, despite it all. "Nice to see you again, Deal."
Dead or dreaming, honestly, the difference didn't matter to him. She was here, and that was all that mattered.
"Timerous," he murmured, his voice rough. He looked her over slowly, taking in the stars woven into her beautiful coat, the light in her eyes, familiar even after these moons, and a low purr began in his chest and vibrated through his entire frame. His face softened.
But he held himself still. He wouldn't forget that she had moved on. He was... he was so incredibly lucky that she didn't hate him right now, that he hadn't crushed her soul, but he couldn't push it. She had a mate now, a mate who was in the stars with her, and he had to respect that... especially when he couldn't bear to see her pull away now.
He averted his gaze slightly as he went on, "it's so good to see you. How have you been?"

"Good as a ghost can be, I suppose. Death is much more boring than life, I've found. Maybe it's because you're not here." Timerous mused. Sure, she had a mate, and he was nice. But if they'd lived, she could tell it wouldn't have lasted. It wasn't that they didn't like each other, it was just that they... weren't quite right. He was far more angry about it all than she. Timerous found it easy to move on. Eternalstar did not. But that was a conversation for a different time, not for the tom in front of her. "I've missed you. But I'm going to miss you far more before we can spend real time together again." She stepped forward, her scarlet husky patterned fur brushing against his comfortingly.
Deal laughed a little too long. He had made her life interesting, but not always in a good way. He had gotten her killed, and their newborn son, and her mate. Another one of his victims, another cat hurt by getting too close to him, and yet she didn’t care. She was still here. Still happy.
Deal leaned into her with a sigh. Dream or death, he was just relieved that he could feel her. From her words he gleaned that he wasn’t quite dead yet, but maybe he was just passing from one life to the next. “I’ve... I’ve missed you too,” he admitted. “I was in the tunnels recently and they were just so... empty.”

"Probably doesn't help that the Regime moved out of their usual ones, does it?" Timerous suggested with a light laugh. "I would imagine that makes them quite empty overall."
It had been too long since she'd spent time with Deal, and she missed their conversations. The last time they'd seen each other had been a sad occasion, and she wanted to replace that memory with one that was significantly nicer. "I know what you mean though. The skies are far more boring without your presence. Though I suppose it's good you're not stuck up here yet."
“I was there before they left,” Deal assured her with a little laugh. “But I’m sure they’re even emptier now.” He hadn’t dared to visit their new residence yet, but he needed to stop by soon. They were so close now.
He hesitated then, shifting from paw to paw. “Is it good?” he asked tentatively. “Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to die. But I put you here. Vixenkismet landed the blow because of me. That doesn’t bother you?”

Timerous laughed again, flopping onto her back beside him and tilting her head back to look at him with her cerulean gaze. "I always knew you were the sort of tom that brought trouble wherever you followed. I knew the risks, and even if I had the chance to do it all over again knowing it, I'd still do it. Not your fault your ex is crazy. You control what you can control, yourself. She knew what she was doing, and it's not your fault for things she chose to do. Especially when she did them to hurt you, something you never asked for, nor deserved."
“I know that what she did wasn’t my fault,” he replied, slowly, testing the words. He spoke without conviction, but he was certain he was being honest this time. He was learning. Slowly. “But you would have lived a full and happy life without me. I hurt her, and you paid the price.” Deal sighed. “I don’t want you to hate me. But I’m still responsible for what happened. It’s just...” he paused then. “I’m sorry. I’m rambling about myself. Like usual.”
"Maybe I would have, or maybe someone else would have found reason to kill me. Or she could have found another reason to hate me in particular. You can never actually say what would have happened if circumstances were different, when one little thing can change an entire outcome." Timerous shrugged. "You choosing to spend time with someone that makes you happy isn't wrong. She chose her path, and whether or not you were there, the outcomes could have been very well similar. Fate has a funny way of righting itself, no matter how hard you try to fight it." She picked up a silvery flower in her claws, twirling it gently. "Ramble away, though. I wouldn't have brought you here for the chat if I didn't want to talk to you, and I know what you're like, Deal." Her eyes sparkled at that comment, an easy smile spread across her features despite the subject matter.
She was right, but he took little comfort in it. Maybe she would have died, but maybe she would have had a few more moons with her mate first. They could have raised their kittens to be proud warriors or mercenaries, rejoiced in the birth of their grandchildren.
“Okay,” he laughed, feeling selfish but not too ashamed. She was right, he couldn’t help reflecting on the past, but these days he was trying to put it behind him. “How you’re always so... optimistic is beyond me.” Optimism didn’t feel like the right word, but he didn’t know how else to describe how easygoing she was, how quick she was to accept the world for how it was. “But if you’re not holding a grudge, I don’t want to live in the past either.” He sat down, intending to move on, before a new thought occurred to him.
“If you’re living here... have you seen our kits? Millennium? Century?” Sundial and Watch?
"At some point you just have to accept you can't change what you can't change. If I'm always holding on to that pain, how could I ever find happiness again? I've suffered enough that I think if I dwelled so much on the things that might have been but weren't, I'd die all over again, but a death of soul and spirit, not body." Timerous was wondering why Deal hadn't laid beside her, so she took the initiative to lean up and drag him down next to her so she could lay her head on his chest. "Millennium's been around, the others flit in and out as they will. Watch enjoys playing with his siblings. Despite the sad situation, I think they all like having others their size to play with, instead of just the grownups. They're our kits, for sure. Wanderers, the lot of em."
Deal smiled down at her, letting her tender words ease some of the pain in his chest. He truly did miss her. He was so tempted to settle down at her side like old times, and as if she read his mind, Timerous pulled him down beside her and he let out a slow, ragged breath, her warm head against his chest a heavenly comfort. Stars, he could have stayed there forever. “Im glad they’re okay,” he murmured. Slowly, he extracted himself from her grip and stood up again, pacing a step back to put distance between them.
His fur was so cool without her at his side.
“That’s– this isn’t a good idea,” Deal murmured. “You have a mate, I don’t want to get in the way.” Maybe for her it was innocent, but he knew in his heart it wasn’t. Not for him. It was intimate.
Timerous only gave Deal a conspiratorial smile, as she rested her head on the ground with a sigh. "I know. But let's just call it trouble in paradise. Neither of us have exactly much luck with mates. And Eternalstar is sweet, but it's not going to last. I don't regret a thing, it's just not meant to be. He's too bitter and angry, and I'm too laid back, and while I understand, I'm not going to change who I am, and he's not going to change who he is. So we'll stay friends, but us being mates has it's time limit already set in stone." She explained. "I didn't think you, of all people would be the one balking at someone having a mate or not, but perhaps you've change a bit more than I thought."
The small she-cat didn't seem particularly upset, of course. She wasn't going to force him into anything he didn't want. Of course, his chest was more comfortable than the ground.
Deal lowered his gaze. “Cats with mates are too much work now,” he said. “Their vengeful partners always call for my blood after, and frankly, I’m tired of the death threats.” He spoke casually, like it was a simple choice, but she would recognize the weight in his tone. It was more than inconvenience that held him back. Deal had changed. And maybe choosing not to cheat was a small thing, but for him it was important. Some new aspect of his identity that he was unsure of navigating but determined to keep.
When his heartbeat had returned to its normal pace, he stepped closer and laid down across from her, comfortably close but not touching. “Couples fight sometimes. That doesn’t mean you give up, you just fight harder,” he told her. “That’s where I always went wrong.”
"That's a fair point, you luck isn't exactly great with that either." She rolled on her side to stare at him more easily. "But as for any relationship, there's a point where you know it won't work, where you're simply incompatible no matter how much you might wish otherwise. Eternalstar and I are headed in different directions, and part of a relationship is also knowing when to walk. I'd love to make it work, but I can't convince him to let go of his pain. That is a decision he will have to figure out for himself. Perhaps I'll be there again when he does, perhaps I won't. Maybe it's selfish, or maybe I was just never meant to have a permanent mate like that." Timerous considered it lightly.
Deal listened in silence. She wasn't wrong - not that he was surprised by that; the only times she'd ever been wrong were when she chose him - but he was still unhappy to hear things hadn't worked out. And... happy too. She deserved to have a good mate, and he had never really been an option, but a part of him was still thrilled to hear she might be available after all.
Other than the whole death thing.
"I hope you find someone else that you share a better connection with," he told her sincerely, tilting his head as he met her gaze, forest greens soft. "You should be happy. You dealt with everyone else's problems enough in life."

"I am happy, here, with you." Timerous answered easily, honestly. "Whether I'm alive or dead, you're some of my fondest memories. However brief our moments together may be."
She watched him for a long moment, gaze twinkling. "You deserve happiness too, you know. You've suffered far more than I in every possible way."
Deal purred lightly, but all too soon he was serious once more. "I don't remember what it's like to be happy," he admitted. "Don't get me wrong, I'm content. Life isn't so bad these days. But I know in the old days, everything was fun, I was always laughing, I felt so good inside. Untouchable. Happy. I'm not like that anymore. I don't know if that's age or just wisdom. Thinking of how much trouble I used to get into... maybe being content is better than being happy, at least for me."

"Or maybe you're still too afraid to let yourself be happy. Unwilling to take the risk that such a feeling could be stripped away from you again." Timerous sighed. "Life being tolerable isn't quite the same as life being good and enjoying it."
"Ouch," Deal muttered. "And maybe you're right. But I'm not the only one who has suffered for my actions; if anything, I've given up the least. Maybe this is my atonement. Maybe it isn't so bad not to feel so much."
