Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Rosethorn wasn't exactly sure why Ratstar had chosen her to be Sunpaw mentor. Perhaps she had done something to displease him recently? Whatever the reason, it wasn't exactly the pregnant deputy's first choice, but she was sure she could handle the brat. Besides, she knew her niece was sweet on the bossy apprentice, so she could handle it for her sake.
"Morning, snotty nose," Rosethorn said with a grin, as the she-cat emerged from the apprentice's den. "I hope you're ready to learn some herbs today." She was hoping Sunpaw wouldn't have time to complain if she was kept busy.
Though she hadn't been present when the pairings were announced, Rosethorn's dung-eating grin had filled her with a deep-seated dread upon reentering camp. She'd marched right on up to her sweet, loving, wonderful, senile paps and demanded that she be given a better mentor-- or, better yet, for Rosethorn to be exiled as she should have been moons ago! Alas, her complaints were met with nothing but justified coos of how adorable she was when she was angry, which only fluffed her fur out further.
Even now, Sunpaw's creamy coat wouldn't settle and she was about a hair length away from exploding. And the spark that lit her fuse was immediate, Rosethorn's snotty nose comment reminding her of all the many, many nights spent devising a plan to be rid of this curse in SummerClan. "WHO ARE YOU CALLING SNOTTY NOSE?! I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW MY NOSE IS NEVER SNOTTY EXCEPT IN LEAF-BARE BECAUSE IT'S COLD BUT I AM A LADY AND I HAVE THE LEAST SNOTTIEST NOSE IN THE WHOLE CLAN! I'LL HAVE YOUR HEAD FOR THIS! YOU WILL RUE THIS DAY." She would have battered her with her paws if she didn't think it would be in poor taste to hit a pregnant woman.
Rosethorn stood and watched Sunpaw erupt, fighting back a wider grin. Oh, this was going to be fun. Once the tirade was over, the deputy inclined her head. "Did you get it all out of your system? Yes? Let's go, then." With a wave of her plumy cream tail, she set off towards the gardens.
A tour would be a good place to start. Rosethorn wasn't sure how she would make it through the day without breaking down laughing, but she meant to try. "Have you been in the gardens before?"
Silently, she marched after Rosethorn-- not because the deputy had won, of course, but only because she was out of breath. That was all. She followed her mentor down the route that led them to the gardens, trying her absolute best to look uninterested and aloof, but her eyes couldn't stop themselves from wandering. Of all of Sunpaw's...unique qualities, one thing she'd never done was leave camp without permission, usually only able to charm Ratstar into taking her out but she accompanied Poppymask to her secret gardens sometimee as well. "Of course I have," she replied, tail lashing behind her. "My mother is Poppymask. I should be more qualified than you for this actually."
"Excellent," Rosethorn said, fighting back a smile as she stopped outside the entrance of the gardens. "Then you can start the tour for me. Let me know what each plant is, the growing season, and the soil conditions it requires. I look forward to learning from your expertise." The soft-furred deputy inclined her head, indicating that Sunpaw should lead the way through the flowers and ferns and herbs.
Throughout Sunpaw's lesson, it would be clear that garden keeping did come, at least a little, naturally to the apprentice. She paid particular attention to the prettiest flowers and herbs, noting their uses, but she threw in a few cursory details about the less interesting plants. "Like borage, who even cares about borage? I mean the flower is pretty, and I guess it's good for fevers, but lavender is just as good, if not better, and it doesn't have an ugly name. Who just names something borage? More like bor-ing." She could prattle on all day like that, but she was stopped abruptly when Rosethorn's tail waved in her face, drawing her attention back to her mentor.
