After two mentors and a few moons delay on a promotion ceremony, Softpaw felt he was finally ready to become a warrior. Raveneye had been as helpful as she could have been given her deputy duties at the time, but in that temporary absence, he was his own mentor. He wished she was still around to see how much he'd improved, but she wasn't and that didn't leave him any clear cat to go to about his promotion. Which was fine, whatever... but what mattered more than that was receiving any form of praise for his efforts. After a life of his clanmates looking down at him, he wanted at least one cat to see his potential--his worth.
Sucking in a breath, the silver bengal left the comfort of the shadows and stepped out into the open. Even if no one was looking, he felt like every eye in the camp was on him. Let them look. Let them see how far I've come from that scared little kittypet. He walked over to the first cat he saw, not caring if it was an apprentice or warrior and lifted his determined, grey gaze to theirs.
As it so happened, Softpaw had approached neither an apprentice, nor a warrior, but the clan's medicine cat, Ahava Vairocana. Which, all things said and done, perhaps took more courage to do than one might initially think. After all, the she-cat had an eerie way about her, too calm for comfort, with black eyed gaze as deep as the void they seemed to have come from, pupils invisible. The left side of her face was burned, particularly around the eye area, leaving her with only one eye to gaze at him with, as strangely serene as ever. "Was there something you needed, Softpaw?" She questioned easily, looking up from her piece of prey.

Oh, crap! When he saw her from afar she had blended in with every other face, but now up close, he realized his mistake. This was only one of the scariest cats in all of of NightClan, at least in his opinion. Why was it any time he stirred up some courage this sort of thing happened!?
"Uh! Hey, A- Ahava," Softpaw stumbled over his words, desperately trying to backpedal his way out of this. He may as well just stay an apprentice another year. No! What was he thinking? Taking a dramatic breath, he faced her with the same determination as before, all while trying not to stare at her burned flesh. "I'm ready to become a warrior and I need you to vouch for me. Name any skill and I'll demonstrate it here and now! I'll do whatever it takes, just... um... if you want to help me that is."

Ahava watched Softpaw backpedal so quickly, and the corner of the she-cat's mouth quirked up in a slight smile as she leaned down, taking a final bite of her prey, and leaving the poor apprentice to sit in terrifying silence for far too long. She swallowed, and regarded him quietly, until she expected he was about ready to bolt away, then stood up, her tall frame extending to full height.
She didn't particularly mind him staring at her face, there were some cats who would always find it unsettling. "Let's go out and see your skills then. See if you're as ready as you claim." The medicine cat motioned towards the camp entrance. "Shall we?"

"Really!?" he beamed with a little wiggle of his butt. "I mean, yes! Of course!" Softpaw skipped off ahead of her, but stopped once he made it to the entrance. Even as he waited for her to reach him, his paws danced along the ground and as soon as she was in earshot, he started up again. "What are you gonna want me to do!? Hunt something, fight, gather moss for the dens? I can do it all, trust me! I won't let you down!"
"Even better. I'm going to ask you to be clever." Ahava Vairocana didn't give him an explanation of her cryptic suggestion, merely led him along seemingly nowhere. They wandered for a while, until the she-cat seemed to find what she was looking for, peering down to sniff a hole and then nodding slightly. If Softpaw leaned down, he'd note the telltale scent of fox within the hole... along with the distinct scent of milk.
The medicine cat allowed him to stew on that information for a moment as they retreated several steps from the entrance, before she turned her head to him. "This fox had it's pups recently. I've been monitoring them to ensure they aren't causing NightClan any trouble, but soon, they're going start exploring and making their own problems for us." She explained simply, "Your task is to relocate the fox and her pups somewhere off the territory, without laying a paw on any of them. I don't care where you lead them to, another clan, rogue lands, or elsewhere, or how long it takes you, but you are to ensure they've settled in a new hole. If you lay a paw on any of the foxes in this hole, or otherwise cause them harm, you fail."
This was most definitely not a normal thing to do, let alone ask an apprentice to accomplish. Personally, Cana thought it was a rather good challenge, however. It was unexpected, strange, and would force him to think outside the box, as well as show the kind of cat he was, if he was willing to help even an enemy to save a child.

(More like a test to see if I'm smart enough to do this XP. I need to start playing dumb characters from now on)
Softpaw recoiled at the stench of fox, barely picking out the sweeter scent of milk accompanying it. His nose stayed wrinkled the entire time Ahava Vairocana explained the assignment, and by the end of it he had the bonus of a stomach ache as well. "You want me to relocate a fox family?" Utter disbelief. He wasn't too concerned about being a chew toy to a fox or something, considering he wasn't a kit, but if he started poking around the pups... Would the mom attack him? If she got the chance? Suspicion creeped into his mind unbidden. What if this was just NightClan's way of finally getting rid of their screw-up of a clanmate? He wouldn't put it past them, but for something like that to come from a medicine cat just felt wrong.
No. He was getting ahead of himself. This wasn't a scheme against him. He was sure they could come up with something better than this if it was. This was just a test. One that he was sure as StarClan going to win.
"Okay," he sighed, accepting the challenge. "So I can't lay a paw on them? That's the only definitive rule here, right? Besides the whole leading them away thing and making sure they settle down safely?" This was going to be tricky no matter what, but he was sure there had to be some wiggle room. A loophole of some kind. Maybe he could even rope in some other apprentice to help, but only as a last resort. Yeah. "Uh, one more question. If you knew they were here, why are we only dealing with them now?"
"Keep them safe until they settle in a new home off of NightClan land without touching them with your own four paws. Any harm comes to them that you cause, directly or indirectly, and you fail." She answered simply, then shrugged slightly at his question. It was understandable. "I'm not in the business of killing obviously pregnant or nursing creatures if not necessary. You wouldn't kill a queen in another clan if you could help it, the only difference is one is feline, one isn't."
