woof rose x phantom date night and pregnancy reveal
Rosethorn really, really needed this date night. There was too much going on at home- with the arrival of her nieces and nephews and the constant awkward tension between Orchid and Crow now that Goldenshadow was out of the picture and the truth had come out. Also, she had two pieces of news- one that made her glow with pride and one that was good, but somewhat inconvenient information that she had to tell her long-distance boyfriend, whom she saw only on the weekends.
At least the borders were open again, so there was no issue with Ratstar disapproving of her relationship. It was difficult, waiting so many days before she could wrap herself around Phantomfox and talk his ears off, but the times she did get to see him were the highlights of her day. Today, it was unseasonably warm, and she found herself out in neutral territory- sticking close to Summerclan territory in case she encountered someone unfriendly- waiting for her mate.
While Rosethorn was being swept to greater heights, Phantomfox was still weary from his own plight. A whirlwind of events had transpired for both of them since that fateful full-moon night, where his optimism for their future together had quashed the shivers of uncertainty from his spine, but he didn't wield the same outlook now as he had then, exhausted and haggard and his pride collapsing in on itself.
The ghost of a simper flitted across his visage, twisted features always softening when he spied her pretty white and cream pelt, and Phantomfox could momentarily expel his troubles. Rosethorn lingered in the distance with something new imbued in her stance, a confidence she did not often display keeping her head high and her amber eyes more vibrant than he'd seen them before. "No perilous encounter this week, love?" His needling tone was soft, lightly humored, as he swept his muzzle against hers.
"My array of handsome bodyguards at home kept me safe," she teased, a smile flickering on her features. "Kidding. You're my only handsome bodyguard." It was a marvel at how far their interactions had come, and no one brought a smile so instantly to her face. They began walking to their usual date location- a babbling brook filled with ferns and flowers that Rosethorn often took home.
"What new developments have occurred in your life this week?" She asked, looking up at the birds darting between tree branches above them as they walked. She was bursting to share her own news, but was forcibly restraining herself until she let him share his life events.
Briefly, jealousy colored his silver optics a distinct shade of jade, but it was ushered away by her next words. "They're only using you to get to me," he teased, strolling along beside her as the birdsong resonated in the evening serenity. For now he could ignore the effects of recent events, but only for so long before she asked for an update about his life. "Well, I became leader of NightClan." He could discern her astounded expression without seeing it for himself, eyes trailing elsewhere to forbid the ire from rising into his gaze, even if it did invade his tone. "And now I am not leader of NightClan. It's for the best."
Phantomfox didn't offer much more elaboration than that as they settled among the wildflowers. "How are things in SummerClan? Handsome bodyguards aside." Interest now replaced everything else that existed on his visage, intrigued by the nerves bouncing off his mate.
"What- I- We'll circle back to that," Rosethorn said, like she didn't quite believe what he said. He said it so casually, like he was talking about the weather. Now her news seemed sullied- would he resent her. "Well, first I wanted to tell you that I've been promoted," she said, sitting down beside the gentle creek.
Pride prickled her pelt again as she thought back to that moment. "Ratstar chose me to be the next deputy of Summerclan," she said, keeping her tone even though she wanted nothing more than to boast.
"Deputy?" The shock was the first thing that registered, but slowly there was the warm glow of a tom who was proud of his mate for her achievements dawning on him. He wasn't sure why Rosethorn wasn't shouting it out or talking fast in the way she did when something exciting gripped her, but he would exude the joy for the both of them. "I'm proud of you. You deserve this very much, and I'm happy that Ratstar is able to see that, too."
"Thank you," Rosethorn said, warming as she saw his expression. "Oh, Starclan, I'm really nervous- but excited, and proud too." There came the blabbering on, now that she knew he wasn't sparing her joy because of his own complicated situation. "I know some cats are uneasy because I can't fight, but that doesn't bother me. I think I'll be ready to learn to fight soon, even if I never love it. Oh, also," she said, letting the news out in a rush, "I'm pregnant."
He could listen to her prattle on all day and night, sharply missing those too few days in MoonClan, but there wasn't much more time to process all of what she was unloading before she dropped an even bigger bomb. "Pregnant?" This was the first piece of news that Phantomfox wasn't entirely certain how to feel about, the worries his mate had expressed when they confessed their feelings lurking in the back of his thoughts. They lived in two separate worlds, a gap that was difficult to bridge for themselves, and now they were going to be bringing children into their mess of a situation. "How do you feel?" were the first words he uttered, silver gaze studying Rosethorn's expression for a sign of what the pregnancy meant for her.
"We-e-e-ell," she said slowly, drawing out her words. "I'm not sure. It came at an inconvenient time, and you're still so far away most of the time. But... I'll have help here in Summerclan. My sister will be around to take care of things- and maybe Crow will forgive me before the kits come. I'm glad that it's with you- I wouldn't want them with anyone else. Still, I'm conflicted because of what I said before. But I think we can make it work. How do you feel?" Rosethorn glanced at him warily, suddenly cognizant of the fact that they had never talked about kits- Phantomfox might not even want them.
"I'm just glad you're the one carrying them. I wouldn't want to lose my dainty figure." Coyly, he hedged the uncertainty from his voice with a humorous lilt to his mew. He couldn't eradicate it completely from his mind, the looming apprehension of co-parenting across borders, especially considering he hadn't given children a second thought in many moons, still a faceless beast he couldn't shake. But he did his best not to let that slip to his mate, Phantomfox unwilling to add stress to an already full plate she seemed to be balancing. "Has...who is it, Graythorn still? Has he given any indication of how many we should be expecting?"
That wasn't the question poised on the edge of his breath, the logistics of how they would manage to be equally present in the kits' lives when neither were willing, or able, to concede to moving clans smoldering under the surface of his more innocent queries.
"Yeah, still Graythorn. He said a larger litter- six or so? Seems to run in my family," Rosethorn laughed. Maybe in a better moment she would've picked up on Phantomfox's hestitations, but with the new position and the news of their children she was still a bit elated and unwilling to see negativity anywhere. Since he wasn't being outright worried, she wouldn't be either.
She leaned into his side, drawing in a deep whiff of pine with a content sigh. "I hope you'll still love me when I'm fat, you know."
As Rosethorn pressed more closely against him, he swept his tail and stirred up a handful of fallen petals that settled across her coat in an array of white, blue, and pink dapples. "Six, huh?" He mused over the image of her chasing around six tiny versions of himself, no doubt likely to be a hurricane storming through the SummerClan camp if they were anything like he was when he was a kit. "Are there any names you've considered? I think Phantomkit is a winner for sure. Not so much a Rosekit-- StarClan help me if there's another you mouthing off."
At her quip his whiskers twitched and the following chuckle was warmer than the sunshine biting the chill out the air. "I will love you before," he paused here, rasping a quick lick across her cheek, and then needled playfully, "and after you're fat. Not during, though."
"Rude!" Rosethorn nudged him for his comment, but her laughter cut the intensity of the action. "And you'd be lucky to have another me, though I will not be naming any of our kits after us- it's the height of conceit." She fell silent for once, closing her eyes as they sat pressed against each other. She would be lying if she said she wasn't worried too.
But for now, at least, she wanted to think only of the good. There'd be time for worrying later. Now she wanted to sit with the man she loved and think of the possibility of a family together. In her daydreams Phantomfox was there too, with her as they chased their kits. Six healthy, vibrant kits who would grow up in the clan she would one day lead. It was a pretty image. "We can worry about the details later," she said softly. "I know there's going to be complications, and I know this is early. But I am sure that I picked the right cat to do this with."
"I would be lucky to have another you," he conceded, a note of adoration brimming his tone. "I'll love them all just as much as I love you. I'll be sure to teach them what prey is your favorite, the flowers you prefer, definitely all the things that annoy you, and we'll have to teach them to be perfect bodyguards, won't we?" He liked the picture they were creating together, with their silly daydreams and hopeful imaginations. Ruefully, he knew the reality would be less sweet and it was likely he would have less time with his children so long as he stayed with NightClan. He expeled the thoughts from his mind, instead choosing to enjoy the time they had together rather than brood over the complications. Soon, they'd have to part again, and Phantomfox felt her absence more starkly each time, making him more desperate for the light-hearted dates they shared.
"I like the image of a horde of bodyguards." Rosethorn laughed, basking in the attention and love that Phantomfox showered on her. It was a good relationship- it'd be perfect if only he'd move to Summerclan. But try as she might, she could not convince him, so she chose to let it go. She was trying to avoid her sister's mistake of overthinking her relationship, and so far it was working.
There was another hour or so of chatter, during which she pried for more information about his brief Nightclan leadership, wondering why he had stepped down so quickly. At the end of the hour, she wound herself around him to say goodbye, letting their scents intermingle and the warmth of their embrace imbue her with strength for the time they would have to spend apart. "I love you," she purred, tucking her cheek against his shoulder. "I'll see you in a week."
He enjoyed their idle time that they filled with snark, sass, and an infinite amount of love shared between them. On the cooler days, where chills still snuck into the atmosphere, they'd relocate to nearby fox den, abandoned sometime during the harsh winter, and flip between harmless insults and crooning sweet promises of two lovers eager to set their plans for the future in stone. On warmer days like this one, he would crash into the stream and spray droplets across her, and she would return the gesture a bit more vigorously.
Phantomfox registered the grief slightly before she'd even moved away, reaching to press his nose into her own side and inhaling the jasmine-heavy aroma of Rosethorn. "I'll see you then," he agreed somberly, managing one last crooked grin. "I love you too. Be safe on your trip home and make sure to keep all my suitors in line once you're back." Half-heatted joke delivered, he watched her go, silver eyes catching her watery amber stare when she glimpsed back at him.
