The darkness had the bitter bite of leafbare in it, making Guppykit shiver as he left the nursery. The moon was high in the sky and camp laid in shadows and complete silence, giving it an eerie quality. Suppressing another shiver the young tom sat a few paces outside the nursery, eyes trained up the stars. To StarClan. Like any other clan cat, he looked up there and wondered what it was like up there. Was everyone happy? Was his mom there?
And stars... they couldn't actually be the cat could they? They just looked like dots in the inky-black sky. What were they then?
The question preceded the golden form of Pikekit, who came and settled down next to his friend. He followed Guppykit's eyes up to the stars, but they didn't hold such existential questions for him. They just glimmered overhead each night, a constant presence that he appreciated.

"Death," the cheerful kit replied, voice innocent and ringing in the still night, "I was thinkin' about the stars. I wonder whose all up there, ya know?" He would be one day probably, and Roachpelt and Fisherkit and even Pikekit. One day they'd all be up there too. Was it cold?
His two golden ears twitched in surprise, a vague confusion befallen Pikekit's quizzical expression. "Death?" He echoed the word like it was strange on his tongue, but there was a twinge of anxiety worming into his heart at the idea. One day he would face death-- and it would take the form of his very own brother. "Well, everyone right? My momma is up there, an' Weevilkit says that all the old SummerClan warriors are up there. Why ya thinking about it?"

glad you liked that, i want him to be sorta nonsensical sometimes "Well, the stars are not cat shaped," he pointed out patiently, as though this was not immediately obvious information. "So I can't help but wonder if those are cats up there. And I only see a few stars sometimes if it's cloudy, where do the other cats go? And have only," he paused and looked up at the hundreds of stars, counting desperately for several moments, "like, nineteen cats died?"

Though he hadn't considered this before, Guppykit did raise some good points. "Maybe it's just leaders up there? But.. yeah, they aren't cat shaped! They look like," he squinted his gaze studiously, "They look like mossballs! Do you think mossballs are alive after all? What if we kill them whenever we play and that's how they get up there in Silverpelt!" Pikekit didn't want to think he was an accidental murderer, but the evidence was beginning to mount.

Guppykit froze for a moment, eyes wide and horrified, "do you really think so? Where are the cats then?! And those poor mossballs." He glanced over at the nursery, where two sad little mostly-shredded mossballs rested by the entrance. They did look like those stars alright.
"Maybe the cats are all that dark stuff in between them." No one had properly been able to explain to him what exactly was all that blank space that surrounded the twinkling stars, most warriors offering the same overused explanation of 'It's Silverpelt.' Or maybe... was that where the Place of No Stars slumbered, those entities that their clanmates only daeed to mention in Whispers? There was far more of that than there were the little white mossballs. "What if we won't go to StarClan? What if we end up there?"
