The warm sun shone down on Ravenmask's gray back as he hunted near the herb garden. Although the air was still cold, the warmth from the sun was a welcome relief after coming through a long cold spell. Wanting to take advantage of the warmer day, Ravenmask wanted to hunt as much as he could for the clan before any colder weather came back.
Right now he was watching a plump rabbit grazing along the edge of the field of herbs. Waiting for the right time to spring, the gray and black tom bolted forward but the rabbit was wise to him. It took off into the herb garden hopping fast in a zigzagging pattern. At one point, the rabbit nearly ran into another cat causing it to lose some of it's momentum. Ravenmask used that to his advantage and finally sunk his claws into the fleeing prey then quickly killed it.
"Thanks!" he brightly meowed to the she cat in the herb garden. "You were a big help!"
"I suppose so, if you call standing here a help," Rosethorn laughed lightly, but her face was turned away, her ears tilted back- she couldn't watch the killing of the rabbit, and she didn't turn back to her companion until she was sure the deed was over. And even then, she kept her eyes away from the blood stains.
"Ravenmask, right? I'm Rosethorn, one of the Garden Keepers." It was a title she had once hated, but upon her return to Summerclan and the repairing of her relationship with her sister, she had begun to take more interest in it. It was more intellectually stimulating, keeping track of the herbs and the growing periods. "You're one of the Red Guard, right?"

"Yes, I am," the gray tom replied. "Although I really don't know why I was chosen. I'm not one of those kind of cats who's all serious and goes around looking for fights." He barred his fangs and held up one of his front feet, claws exposed, in a fighting position. "HISSSS! HISSSSS! I'm a Red Guard cat! Come 'n fight me! HISSSSSSSSSSS!" He broke out in laughter. "No really. Don't get me wrong. I can be serious and defend our clan from enemies but hey, I don't have to be all business about it. Well enough about me, what's it like being a Garden Keeper?" He had always thought the position would be kind of boring. He enjoyed adventures and the thrill of hunting. Hanging about growing things, well that just wasn't his idea of fun.
Rosethorn smiled faintly, though the fighting position unnerved her. She forced herself to not react, not wanting to make the other tom feel bad. "It's okay," she said slowly. "I'm beginning to like it more and more. I didn't at first- I wanted to be a warrior, like my sister Orchiddrop. I don't doubt that she'll be in the Red Guard when she's a little older."
Orchiddrop's reputation as a fighter was growing, but she was currently... detained... by her pregnancy and her controlling mate. So if that wasn't fixed, who knew where she'd end up? "But it's more challenging than I thought- a lot of organization and planning ahead for planting and weeding and such."

Ravenmask sat down and wrapped his tail neatly around his body so that the end covered his front paws. "Really? I didn't know your job was that involved. You have to plan ahead and actually plant things? I thought they just grew wherever they wanted." He hadn't given it much thought before. "Can't they just fend for themselves like cats do?" As he said the words he realized that his statement wasn't quite true. Clan cats fend for other cats inside their own clans. That's what sets them apart from rogues and loners.
Rosethorn's brow lifted, an amused smile on her features. "Well, we could plant them willy nilly, but then we often would be low on supplies. And then we wouldn't have the herbs to tend to the wounds of the brave warriors like yourself, who tend to get themselves injured."
The pretty she cat sat too, before continuing. "So yes, we do need to plan ahead. There's shorter and longer growing seasons, and some herbs need different soil than others. I thought of it like you did at first, but now I can appreciate how much work it is. Not quite as dangerous as fighting and hunting, but a key part of supporting the clan."

The part she said about 'brave warriors' made Ravenmask smile. Was she complimenting him or teasing him? He shrugged his shoulders, either way he liked it.
"Thanks for sharing this with me," he stated earnestly. "I never knew Garden Keepers were all that important before now. You do have a vital role in our clan even if it's not hunting or fighting." He gave Rosethorn a genuine heart-felt smile. "How about I catch something for us to eat? This rabbit is for the clan but I can surely find some mice or birds for us."
