Snowpaw: the epitome of a loyal follower and productive member of WinterClan, would never do something that could possibly upset Wintrystar. He would never associate with the demons in the clan in any way that could be perceived as friendly. To do so would be asking for trouble, but trouble or not, Snowpaw was done with never. He couldn't sit back and watch his clanmates suffer from near constant abuse any longer. Demon or otherwise. Openly defending them was just as much out of the question though, if what happened to Snowbunny was anything to go by. But there had to be something he could do to help?
With a sigh, the snowshoe tom blinked out of his daze and by some miracle, his vision focused on Mangledpaw. He swallowed in anticipation at the sight because this was it--the perfect opportunity to put his thoughts into action. Without another moment's hesitation, he rose to his paws and made his way over to the other tom. The fact that they were in the middle of the camp hadn't even crossed his mind, even as he stopped directly in front of him. "Hello, Mangledpaw," he said in a surprisingly rough voice. An awkward silence followed the greeting as Snowpaw considered his next words carefully, and then even more carefully after that. His eyes narrowed in concentration until finally, he decided to throw all social etiquette across the border and just say what he was thinking. "This is the first time we've talked and I apologize for waiting so long, but you're a member of this clan and I want to start treating you like one. So... is there anything I can do for you?"

Mangledpaw had learned that the best thing to do was to keep busy. If he did everything he was supposed to do, then no one would bother him. The apprentice did everything he could to brush off the remarks and glares from Winterclan. He had grown up with their resentment and hatred and was used to the way that they looked at himself and his siblings. But he noticed that when he did what was expected of him then no one would bother him. Mangledpaw hunted twice as much as the other apprentices or warriors, did double the work cleaning out the dens and gathering moss for the elders and queens... though the only queen that seemed to accept any moss he gathered was his mother, Dottymask. Still, it never stopped him from proving that he could be a loyal Winterclan cat like the rest of them.
So then why was it, as he walked through the center of camp to deliver the moss he had gathered for his adoptive mother, that he froze with trepidation at Snowpaw's approach. The black-furred apprentice froze mid-step, quickly lowering his gaze as the tom closed the gap between them. But his words nearly shocked Mangledpaw.
I apologize for waiting so long... is there anything I can do for you?
"What?" Came the muffled surprise as Mangledpaw looked up at Snowpaw with confused yellow eyes. "I-I mean... I'm sorry, but... you have nothing to apologize for... right?"

A small amount of glee swelled in him at Mangledpaw's response, not because of the words themselves, but because for once in his life he wasn't met with hostility or sarcasm. While it reassured him that he was doing the right thing here, he felt guilty when he noticed the moss in the other's grasp. It hadn't been his intention to get in the way of a job. "I don't think the clan would want me to apologize, but I want to anyway. I used to avoid you and your siblings because I thought that's what was right..." Snowpaw replied solemnly, not in the least bit fazed by Mangledpaw's surprise or confusion. "It doesn't feel right though. It never really did. Why are you apologizing?"

Mangledpaw opened his mouth at that before he closed it. Why was he apologizing? He hadn't done anything wrong... and as far as he could remember it wasn't against the rules for him to talk to another student... especially if that student approached him first. The black-furred tom was just so used to apologizing to everyone that it just came naturally to him. His pelt grew hot with embarrassment as he gathered up the bits of moss he had dropped to the ground.
"I... well nothing I guess." He said, offering Snowpaw a sheepish smile. "I'm just so used to it, I guess. But... really you don't have to apologize for that. My siblings and I... we're just different."

"That's what I heard. That your family's different." His blue eyes studied the tom carefully, searching for any sign of such a difference. For the life of him though, he couldn't see any massive claws or venomous fangs. Nothing about Mangledpaw screamed demon. "How though? You look like everyone else." Well, all of the "demons" looked rather attractive with their mystical markings or unique eyes, but even that felt like a stretch. "You sound the same and you seem... nice? I don't understand." There was the possibility that he was wrong of course. Mangledpaw really could be a demon, but he couldn't believe it without hearing it from a reliable source.
