Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
It was dusk when The Syndicate and the twins said their goodbyes near the Summerclan border. The exhaustion from their two week long journey was sitting heavily on Orchidpaw's shoulders, and even Rosepaw, usually so energetic and bubbly, was dragging her feet. Though they had both found a sort of closure from their escapades, neither of them were excited about returning to camp.
They had disappeared for two weeks without anything other than a message that one of the other apprentices had been instructed to give to Ratstar- "We'll be back". It was hardly an explanation or excuse, and they both knew that they might face serious repercussions for vanishing with no warning or validation. They were warrior aged, and Orchidpaw was an exceptional fighter, but she was worried that this would delay her upcoming promotion.
A patrol met them, surprise crossing their faces at the sight of the small, wiry sisters. They were both promptly escorted to Ratstar's den, where they sat before the leader, shoulder to shoulder. Orchidpaw's white shoulders were slumped, and her blue gaze avoided the leader's, but pretty Rosepaw had her shoulders squared defiantly, her amber eyes meeting his gaze evenly.
"We're sorry," Orchidpaw said after a long moment, even though Rosepaw looked like she disagreed. "We know it was... unacceptable for us to leave like that. But if you'll give us a chance, we can explain why we had to go."
Ratstar was the only other cat present in the leaders' den, a hollow in the trunk of the old beech tree that neither of the sisters had been in before. The den was surprisingly spacious for what appeared on the outside to be only an average-sized tree; the walls lined in vines and brambles, with slowly-dying, but still beautiful, flowers twisted into them. Yet despite how lovely the interior was, the tense atmosphere of the meeting made it near-impossible to appreciate. The Summerclan leader was well-known for being a friendly and personable soul, which made the stern, disappointed expression he wore while staring down the pair of she-cats even more uncomfortable.
When Orchidpaw finally worked up the courage to speak, he lifted his tail to cut off whatever explanation was on her tongue. "I don' wanna know why ya left," he meowed evenly, his single eye glancing between the two every few seconds. "Ya made it very clear when ya left that ya don' trust Summerclan enough for any o' us t' know." His frown deepened slightly. "Orchidpaw. Rosepaw. Summerclan is supposed t' be a family, an' families are built on trust. After the stunt y'all pulled, how am I supposed to trust you both won't jus' run away again? How am I supposed to trust that you both are committed to this clan?"
The fur along Rosepaw's shoulders fluffed slightly, with all the anger and passion of youth, as the leader chewed them out. She knew deep down that he was right, that they had lost the clan's trust, but in her guilt manifested itself in indignation. "We couldn't tell you beforehand! You would never had supported us going to kill the rogues that killed our parents! This clan is so happy and... and optimistic. How were we supposed to trust you to understand the rage and anguish that motivated us to go? We-"
Rosepaw's speech was cut short when she realized Orchidpaw was crying. Solemn, composed Orchidpaw. Her shock made her stop mid-sentence, sitting back meekly as her sister spoke in her stead. "We're sorry that we've broken your trust, Ratstar." Orchidpaw said, her eyes fixed on the ground as tears spilled over. "And you're right. We didn't trust you. It was difficult, joining a new way of life after losing our family. It was hard to be around the positivity and open arms when we hadn't processed our trauma. We repaid your kindness with my aloofness and Rosepaw's temper. We never gave you the opportunity to understand our motives."
After a moment, Orchidpaw looked up, meeting the Ratstar's one-eyed gaze. "But you know, Ratstar, I'm not quite sorry we went. I know that sounds disrespectful, but the journey was something both of us had to go on. I had to confront the bitterness in myself, the bitterness that kept me from trusting Summerclan. Now that it's over, I'm in a better place, and I think Rosepaw is too. I returned with a lighter heart and clearer eyes, and I can see how badly I've taken Summerclan for granted. I know you can't trust us yet, but I want to work to regain the clan's trust. There's nothing for us to run away to anymore- I want Summerclan to become my home, not just the clan I live in. I know- I know that this might delay my promotion, and I'm okay with that. I just want to stay, to prove to everyone that I'm here for the long term."
Her words rang clear with sincerity, and a wisdom that ran deeper than her year of life. Rosepaw dropped her gaze, nodding in agreement with her sister's speech- even if she did want to vent a little more.
