(Finally the moment has arrived, for Frozenfire to FINALLY FREAKING DIE XP)
Flamingstar had come back burned and weakened from the SunClan attack and Raveneye had been very quiet.
It would seem that fortune was smiling upon her, and she could almost hear Ericanorth whispering in her ear, urging her on. Urging her to finally take what should've been hers all along.
Putting on a sweet smile on her face, internally giddy with excitement as she walked over to Flamingstar's den.
"Flamingstar?" She said softly poking her head inside, letting out a soft sympathetic sigh as she entered. Ever the star in her role of being the wonderful and supportive friend. Today was her final performance, and she had to give it her best. "You know, I was thinking a visit to the hot springs could be just what you need." Frozenfire offered with a soft smile. "Ahava's said your burns are getting better now and even just sitting and basking near the warmth should be just the thing to sooth the soul."
"So what do you say, you up for a little girls night?" She purred.
Flamingstar lifted her head as her closest, most trusted friend entered the den. She listened to her proposal, as she would any other day but she felt Frozenfire was a bit friendlier than usual. It was a little odd but Flamingstar pushed her insecurities aside. Perhaps her friend was just in a better mood today. She couldn't blame her for being happy especially since Ericanorth was no longer with her and she deserved happiness after going through that. Flamingstar slowly rose to her paws, stretching her aching muscles. "I suppose your right. This cold air is definitely not doing me any favors with the healing and the sore muscles."
Frozenfire's purr grew stronger, having to close her eyes to hide the malignant gleam of satisfaction they would have probably held.
"Wonderful." She meowed turning away from Flamingstar before opening her eyes once more, "If we're lucky we'll catch some prey and we can enjoy a bite there." She said tail waving behind her as she led Flamingstar out of her den. The ice colored she cat casting her gaze about at the clan as they passed through the tunnels.
The clan that after all this would be hers. Soon a cavern not so different than this would be Flamingstar's final resting place.
It had taken a lot of preplanning but Frozenfire was confident that today it would be done. Plus after testing the red hot liquid she'd discovered by kicking a rock into it and watching it disappear beneath the surface, splitting dramatically before falling away. She was confident that Flamingstar would die and there'd be nothing left.
No one would ever be the wiser.
It was perfect.
It caused Frozenfire to have a little bounce in her step as they walked up the winding path to the forest surface.
"It has been too long since we enjoyed some time together you know," Frozenfire mused, seeing no problem with basking in some nostalgia. After all, it would be the last conversation she and Flamingstar would ever have. Might as well enjoy it. "It's a shame."
Struggling up the winding path, Flamingstar finally made it, having to stop to catch her breath for a moment. "This is true, my friend. Despite all that is happening, the battle with Sunclan, my battle with Burningsummer, and Raveneye's disappearance, I could use some time to relax and have a moment to enjoy quality time with my closest friend." After taking a moment, Flamingstar finally was able to continue their journey to the hot springs. "I greatly appreciate you getting me out of there. I needed this. I've also been meaning to talk to you. As you know, of course, Raveneye has disappeared. We followed her scent to the rogue outlands and it was heavily mingled with the scent of a rogue gang. I do not think Raveneye would have left the clan for good but we cannot be sure she didn't just decide to join the rogue gang herself. We will have to do an investigation but Nightclan cannot go without a deputy. Especially in my current condition. I realize that I have not been fair to you. You have helped me get to where I needed to be and have been an excellent Loyal Guard Captain but it is clear that you deserve to be more than just the Loyal Guard Captain. So, that being said, I wanted to formally ask you if you want to be my deputy."
Frozenfire listened, allowing Flamingstar to continue. Her eyes narrowing as she went on.
'Have not been fair? That's putting it lightly.'
But though the thought made fury grow in her heart, she forced it down. They were getting close to the hot springs but they weren't there yet.
She let a few minutes pass in silence, tail flicking, going into deep thought, buying herself a good bit of travel time but she would need to answer soon.
"You kept me waiting a long time," Frozenfire meowed, drawing out her answer as she walked. "Using my kits as an excuse to pick Firewind over me, and then Raveneye after, was not exactly a sign of good faith. Especially after all we've been through." She meowed, forcing her posture to slouch.
She let the silence hang leading Flamingstar along. They were so so close now, she could see the hidden pit out of the corner of her eye. The pit that if Flamingstar just walked into would drop her down to the caverns below.
Frozenfire's paws itched to just grab the she cat and throw her in herself.
"I do deserve more than just Loyal Guard Captain." Frozenfire went on, mentally counting off the paces, breaths, as her heart began to pick up a drum beat. Drum roll to her leader's grand demise.
"But I'm not being patient anymore."
And with that just as Flamingstar placed her paw over the covered pit and the branches and leaves gave way. Frozenfire turned and shoved the she cat hard.
Once Flamingstar's full weight came upon the covered pit, the covering gave way sending the ginger leader tumbling down into the hole.
Frozenfire couldn't help the laugh that escaped her as she darted into the hole after her leader, taking glee in every moment Flamingstar impacted the walls on her way down.
She wasn't certain this would take a life from Flamingstar. It would certainly make Frozenfire's life easier if it did, but she was so close now.
"Oh Ericanorth, if you could've been here for this! Are you there my love? Come! Watch, as I avenge you and take what should've been mine all along!" The moons of hiding the wrath in her heart were over, and the words came out crazed. The grief and madness from moons spent waiting were over as she cackled to herself. Throwing caution to the wind as she began to bound down, almost at the bottom where Flamingstar had landed with a whump.
The heat radiating up from the cavern below warmed her from nose to tail tip. A drastic change from the cold temperatures of the forest up above.
But it was here the fire would be extinguished and the ice would take over NightClan, as she should've long ago!
Flamingstar opened her jaws to respond when she was suddenly shoved and the ground beneath her paws disappeared. The sickening pull of gravity made her stomach flip as she fell into the hollowed cavern lit only by the heated glow of the lava. She hit the ground with an awkward thud, her head smacking the ground and the breath being knocked from her lungs. She laid there for a moment, struggling to breathe, struggling to see. The room spun around her, the lava blurred into a blinding light. Her vision only slightly cleared enough to see Frozenfire racing toward her, pride and anger burning in her eyes. "Frozenfire! What are you doing?" She couldn't understand. She knew she was unfair to Frozenfire but she had assumed the she-cat who she thought was her friend would have forgiven her and accepted her apology. However, she was wrong. Flamingstar's heart ached as she saw the hate in her friend's eyes. She slowly rose to her paws to face Frozenfire, the room still spinning around her and her head throbbing. She winced as hot pain shot up her right foreleg the moment she applied pressure. She blinked hard several times in an attempt to clear her blurred vision but it was pointless. This was where she was going to die...to die for good.
"What am I doing?" Frozenfire echoed, eyes narrowing into slits as she walked up to Flamingstar. "Why, I'm taking over. Just as you did to Soaringstar," She said grinning darkly, then she saw the confusion and dazed look in Flamingstar's eyes and she shook her head tutting.
"Oh don't look at me like that." Frozenfire said like a mother admonishing a silly kitten. "You truly didn't think we were friends did you?"
Her eyes became cold, blazing with an icy blue flame for which she was named.
"Especially not since your mouse brained Shadow Era got Ericanorth killed. You let Turbulentsea kill her to save Burningstar and you did nothing. Then you snubbed me for the last time in green leaf. This is the end Flamingstar." She said simply, striding forward. "I was hoping you might lose a life in the fall. But oh well, I suppose it is satisfying to push you in."
The light of the lava and the shadows of the cavern cast her in a fiery light, and the shadows clung to her matching the hate in her eyes.
Frozenfire stalked forward unsheathing her claws, and struck her leader across her face. She'd noticed her favoring her right foreleg, so she struck Flamingstar so she fell onto it, dropping her back to the ground. "Perhaps if you pray hard enough StarClan will overlook our dirty deeds, and let you in." She sneered as she boxed her injured leader in, driving her closer to the edge, the stone under their paws becoming almost too hot to bear. She could only imagine how Flamingstar's healing burns must feel with the heat, and the thought made her grin darkly.
///---///
Bleakwind had been out hunting near the hot springs. The warmer temperatures that clung to the area made it a good spot to catch prey.
He'd located a nice juicy squirrel that he was sure Flamingstar would've liked. Something to cheer her up after all that had gone down.
Then a loud crashing noise, nearby made the squirrel bolt upright and then bolt for the trees in the distance.
"What the-" Bleakwind turned towards the offending source of the sound, and he felt his blood go cold at the cackling he heard. The sound of madness.
Ears flattening worriedly, had a crazed league cat come back to the territory?
Images of Smallspiral's brutal murder drove Bleakwind to hurry towards the source, locating a hole that went down and it was unclear where it led.
Heart picking up, he could faintly hear voices, and what sounded like Flamingstar's voice.
What was she doing out of camp?!
Panic surging Bleakwind didn't hesitate, he scrambled down into the hole nearly slipping and going tumbling down. But he managed to recover his footing.
Lesson learned that rushing could get him hurt and render him useless, he began to make his way down as fast as he could while taking care to not be sent tumbling end over end down the steep incline.
Flamingstar's eyes widened, surprised that her actions had hurt someone so badly. She hadn't realized how much she had hurt Frozenfire until she had said it all out loud. "I-Im sorry..." But the apology came short as Frozenfire's claws met Flamingstar's muzzle, causing her to stumbled backward. Then, she felt excruciating pain as Frozenfire struck her injured leg which caused it to buckle under her weight and she fell onto the burning rocks. The heat added to the pain of her burns and she wanted to yowl but she knew this was what she deserved. However, despite her knowledge of her poor leadership, she couldn't allow Frozenfire to be Nightclan's leader - not now. The leader rose to her paws once more but Frozenfire was quick to attack. Over and over, Frozenfire's claws slashed at her. Flamingstar had no choice but to keep backing away from the swipes.
As she backed up, the heat from the lava kept getting hotter and hotter as she neared the pit. She realized what Frozenfire was doing. She was going to burn Flamingstar to death. What was it with everyone trying to burn her? Perhaps it was the irony in the name. Her paw made it to the edge of the hot rock which was now scolding her paw pads. She stared Frozenfire in the eyes, searching for a way to reason with her but there was nothing but darkness. Flamingstar unsheathed her claws, prepared to do everything she could to stop Frozenfire. "You've taught me a valuable lesson, Frozenfire. There isn't anyone I can trust and for as long as I'm alive and breathing, I will keep fighting you and trying to stop you. I will never give my clan up to you!" At the last words, she turned to a pile of burning embers beside her and sprayed them up into Frozenfire's face. While the burning embers dazed Frozenfire, Flamingstar gave the other she-cat a hard shove backwards, managing to get herself away from the edge of the lava to face Frozenfire once more. If Frozenfire wanted a battle, she was going to have a war. "I will not go down without a fight."
Frozenfire roared as the flaming embers struck her in the face, just managing to close her eyes in time. But still she was forced to draw back shaking her head violently to get the stinging hot embers off, lifting her paw to help.
She grunted as Flamingstar shoved her backwards. Her ears flattening as she forced her eyes back open, the singing pain gone now.
She sneered. "It was my clan first. It should've been mine all along!" She shouted.
"I've lived in NightClan my whole life! I was loyal! I never wavered, not like Burningstar and her wandering loyalties, Soaringstar and her kit stealing ways of returning with an outsider as her mate." She curled her lip and glared at Flamingstar. "And not like the filthy traitor you are, I'm doing NightClan a service!" She shouted.
With a roar she rushed at Flamingstar once more feinting to go for her bad leg again, but instead popping up lifting her claws and scoring them down the shoulder of Flamingstar's good foreleg.
Simply targetting her weakest leg wouldn't be enough, she'd just worsen Flamingstar's injuries. Give her more weaknesses to struggle with.
Frozenfire grinned as she attacked. "I'll let you have a fight. Teach you over and over again the pain you caused Ericanorth and every other cat with your selfishness, then you'll burn all the same!" She said.
Her madness, and the darkness she had been concealing for so long. Letting it out was so liberating, she glanced around and swore she could see a flash of white.
"Ericanorth!" She said lighting up. "You are here my love." She whispered. "Don't worry, I'll be sending her to join you in the Dark Forest. Just a little longer my dear, then you can have her. We'll have our revenge."
She let out a laugh as she turned to Flamingstar grinning darkly, before she lunged in to attack once more. Throwing strategy to the wind as she started just slicing into the leader.
Every block, shove, or strike the leader retaliated with would give her a temporary reprieve. But she would be unable to get past the crazed she cat. And Frozenfire was content now to simply tear into Flamingstar, striking healing burns and laughing as she tore the healing flesh open sending scarlet droplets to the ground where they sizzled ominously.
Flamingstar knew she couldn't stand there much longer. Her paws were beginning to become raw from the scolding rocks while her healing burns were burning once more with the extra heat. The pain from Frozenfire's claws against her burns took her breath away. She had to get away from Frozenfire and from the lava. She glanced around desperately until she saw a ledge not too far from where they stood. She could jump up there and escape Frozenfire's claws of death. Mustering up the rest of her strength, she shoved Frozenfire out of the way and raced for the ledge, holding her injured leg up. She reached the ledge just before Frozenfire and leaped onto it. She turned to see Frozenfire getting ready to follow her up. "Frozenfire, don't do it! It's not safe for two of us to be up here! Please, reconsider your actions."
"There's nothing to reconsider! You will die!" Frozenfire snarled, lips pulled back. She bunched her legs under her, gathering herself and then she leapt up onto the ledge, crashing into Flamingstar and hooking her claws into her to continue her assault.
But as Flamingstar had noticed the ledge didn't have enough space for the two of them. And though Frozenfire was able to hook her claws in Flamingstar's fur her position wasn't stable and her hindpaws slipped, making it easy for Flamingstar to flip Frozenfire onto her back.
Flamingstar flipped Frozenfire, using the small space to her advantage. "You have to stop this, Frozenfire! I can make you my deputy, we can rule Nightclan together!" However, the ledge beneath their paws began to crack.
