Pantherclaw had taken it upon herself to watch over the orphaned litter of kits ever since their mother died. After bringing some food into the nursery for the six little kits, she went outside to sun herself in the late leaffall sunshine. While she was in a half doze, she felt tiny little teeth sink into her tail. She turned her head in surprise to see Bindingkit attached to her. Carefully she pulled her tail from his grasp.
"So what's the matter? Didn't I bring you enough food to eat?" she meowed teasingly.
"I stuffed!" Bindingkit squeaked. "I catch a fuzzy snake!" He pounced for the black she cat's tail but she flicked it away just in time and peered inside the nursery.
"Where's your brothers and sisters?" she asked.
"Oh, they're comin'. I just finished eatin' first."
It seemed Soulkit was a slow eater, as he wasn't even halfway done yet when he heard his brother and Pantherclaw outside. He glanced between the food that was left and the exit of the nursery, trying to decide between his hunger and his curiosity. Looking at his other siblings, he was definitely going to finish eating last, and probably miss out on whatever fun was going on outside. So, he picked up the rest of his food and awkwardly padded outside, nearly dropping it on the way.
He'd missed the memo about eating breakfast and had been wandering around camp, but he glanced down when his paw splashed in a puddle and he noticed his clearly infected pink eyes staring back at him. Tears streaked his cheeks, the little tom instantly scampering to find Pantherclaw, bowling Bindingkit over in the process.

Bindingkit saw Soulkit tottering out of the nursery carrying his food when he heard Iridescentkit cry out. He turned to see what was upsetting his other brother when suddenly he was run over by him. "Hey!" he mewed indignantly. Thinking he wanted to play, the silver tabby regained his feet and pounced on top of Iridescentkit.
"Wait, stop, get off of him," Pantherclaw meowed. She knew something was troubling Iridescentkit and she separated the two kits. "Now what's got you so upset?" she asked in a kindly but concerned voice.

Iridescentkit collapsed against Pantherclaw as she kneeled down to inspect him. "Momma--" he'd taken to calling her that, having no other maternal presence of note, "-- my eyes are bleeding! I'm dying!" His wail could be heard throughout the camp and turned multiple heads in their direction.

"Now, now," Pantherclaw mewed soothingly. She liked that he called her momma. She longed for the day when she could have kits of her own. "You're not dying and your eyes aren't bleeding. Remember what Graythorn told you. That's the color of your eyes." She raised up her paw and wiped some of Iridescentkit's tears away. "See?" she mewed showing her paw to the distraught kit. "There's no blood there. Only tears."
Bindingkit rolled his eyes and trotted over to Soulkit. He had heard Iridescentkit's woes before. "Are you gonna finish all that food? I can help you." He had told Pantherclaw he was stuffed but he could always eat some more.
Lunarkit got distracted while eating and had abandoned her food. A shiny gleam from the shadows of one of the many nursery nests had caught her eye. This was a common occurrence causing her to never actually finish a meal. She dash quickly to the nest and fished out the small object. It looked like a shell fragment. Maybe it had got squashed by a queen and had been broken or maybe it had always been that way. Streaks of pink dusted the inside. She had seen many pink dusted shells, but she was sure this was a different one. The squiggle it made was different form the others. She took the small prize and dragged it out to show off to Pantherclaw and her siblings.

A bright glimmer of reflected sunlight caught Bindingkit's attention distracting him from the food Soulkit had. "Look, Lunarkit found something new," he mewed to Soulkit. "Let's see what it is!"
Soulkit's food had been forgotten about nearly the moment that he had left the nursery, as Iridescentkit had stolen his attention with his screaming. Honestly, he wasn't even that hungry anymore, despite the amount still leftover. It wasn't until Bindingkit reminded him of its existence that he acknowledged it again, almost in shock. "Oh yeah," he muttered, feeling his stomach rebel at the thought of more food. Still, it was his food, and so a defiant tug made him open his mouth to tell his brother so, when Bindingkit brought his attention to Lunarkit and an oddly familiar glint. Wait, where had he seen that shell before? His eyes narrowed as he watched Lunarkit approach, mind racing to try and place the object. "Did you already show this to-" he began to ask, then froze. No, he would recognize that squiggly texture anywhere! "That's mine!" his voice cracked in a squeak.

Pantherclaw looked up quickly from where she was consoling Iridescentkit when she heard Soulkit's sharp accusation. The last thing she needed was a fight to break out. Her eyes were on Soulkit and Lunarkit in case she needed to intervene while her tail comfortingly stroked along the distraught tom's back.
"Yeah, wait a minute," Bindingkit mewed. "Didn't I see you playing with that yesterday?" he asked Soulkit.
Iridescentkit's wails seemed to settle down to sniffles...for now. He inspected Pantherclaw's paw closely for the most microscopic evidence of blood there, found none, and appeared to internalize it this time, especially relieved as she mentioned the medicine cat's words. "Oh. Okay. Thanks, momma!" He purred and rubbed the top of his head against her leg before he noticed his littermates bickering-- without him! "Hey, wait up!" He bounded over to the trio but fell at the last second, his chin making sharp contact with the shell that was the root of the dissention between Lunarkit and Soulkit.
Time seemed to freeze around Soulkit as he stared at the scattered fragments of his one precious shell. The world around him spun, or was that just his mind? All he knew was things were spinning around him, everything except for those shards of shell forgotten. Perhaps there was a way that he could fix it? Maybe he could nab some spiderweb to hold it together - that was sticky, right? Ever so slowly, the silver tabby stood up, his legs wobbling underneath him as he made his way closer to the poor shell, and his two siblings that had caused the situation. His gaze focused on the two of them, then flittered back to the sharp pieces on the ground, then back up at Iridescentkit and Lunarkit. His mouth opened, but no words came to him. Still in shock, he turned to look at Bindingkit and Pantherclaw, his eyes begging for help.

The black she cat came over to Soulkit and rubbed her side against his in a gesture of comfort. "Accidents happen," she mewed. "Try not to be too upset at your littermates." Pantherclaw was sure Iridescentkit and Lunarkit didn't have ill intent concerning the pretty shell. "I'll tell you what," she continued talking to Soulkit. "The next time I'm out by the ocean, I'll find you another shell, one even prettier than this one was. How'd you like that?"
For a moment, lost in his emotions as he was, Soulkit found himself nodding vigorously before remembering that he was supposed to be keeping up a mysterious persona. He froze mid-nod, then cleared his throat, forcing his body to relax, though his gaze fell to the shattered shell again. "If you can find one," he replied, his voice sounding a little forced. Internally, however, he was still bouncing with his excitement at the thought of the shell that Pantherclaw was going to bring him.

Pantherclaw smiled at Soulkit's attempt to cover his excitement. She decided she wouldn't let on she noticed. For some reason known only to the kit, he wanted to seem nonchalant. Then her eyes took in the broken shell again but this time she noticed that several of the pieces looked very sharp. "Since the shell is all broken now, let's bury it so none of you will get a cut from it." After the words left her mouth she winced as she glanced over at Iridescentkit. Had she made a mistake by saying what might happen? How might he respond? Quickly she began to scratch a hole in the ground in which to bury the broken shards.
Iridescentkit, who had been sniffling and worrying that Soulkit was going to hate him for the rest of their lives, paled. Was that possible? He was already white. But now his skin appeared gray under his coat and not the delicate flush of pink that was often scorched by the sun. "Oh, no! Momma, what if it cut me and I bleed out all over SummerClan and then you have to bury me with the shell?!?" He raised his paws to his chin and felt around, not feeling any wetness but maybe he was bleeding on the inside and his days were really numbered. In that same moment he crashed into Soulkit and wrapped his legs around his brother, rubbing his face all along him to pass on the....death? "I don't wanna die alone, Soully!"

Since the shell wasn't very big to begin with, it didn't take Pantherclaw long to bury it. When she was finished, she turned and saw what looked like to her Iridescentkit clinging on to his brother for comfort. Sighing, she came closer to the two cats. "You're not cut and you're not going to die," she told the distraught kit. "And," she continued, "no one's going to get hurt from that shell because it's been buried and can't hurt anyone anymore."
Bindingkit stood to one side and shook his head ruefully as he watch his brother's antics. It's a shame not everyone was born with a brave heart like mine.

He sniffles. "Really? No one ever?" He gazed at the disturbed earth from where Pantherclaw buried the fragments of the shell, and slowly Iridescentkit's grip on Soulkit began to loosen. At least it could never hurt anyone ever again and no one was ever going to die by the shards of the shell, the most gruesome beast he'd ever encountered in his like one moon of cognitive existence.
Lunarkit felt bad when the shell got broken. She hadn't known it was Soulkit's and if she had any idea it was she would have not brought it out of its hiding spot.
"I'm sorry Souly." Her was voice small and her eyes not meeting her brother's. Tears were forming at the corners of her eyes she wanted to run out to the ocean and replace it right away, but where was the ocean??
