Since he had been promoted to the rank of warrior, it had been awhile since Skycloud got to spend much time with Lightpaw. He thought back to the day they had spent in the pool at the waterfall. Now that Leafbare had come, there wouldn't be anymore swimming for sometime, not until Newleaf arrives. But they could do other things together like slide on the ice or hunt in the snow.
He got up from where he was sitting and began to look around for her. Maybe she wouldn't have any apprentice assignments today.
Lightpaw sniffed around the nursery, making sure she hadn't left any dirty bedding behind. She had been sent to clean the nursery after failing - yet again - to catch any prey. It was really getting aggravating. With a sigh, the apprentice turned to enjoy the rest of her day. The only task now would be to eventually, y'know...catch something.
As she turned, Lightpaw's eyes landed on her friend. She hadn't seen him since he'd been promoted, and while she had been busy, the she-cat hadn't been busy enough to forget Skycloud.
"Hey!" Lightpaw called, bounding toward the warrior with her tail fluffed up. "Look who it is! Skycloud, huh?" Whitemuzzle

"Hi!" the young warrior meowed cheerfully. He liked the sound of his new name coming from his friend. "I see your mentor has been keeping you busy." He flicked a stray piece of bedding moss from Lightpaw's shoulder with a sweep of his tail. "Are you still busy with your duties? If you are I can help you and if you aren't would you like to come out hunting with me?" A light new snow had recently fallen making tracking prey much easier.
She perked up. "You mean you still wanna hang out with me?" Lightpaw's eyes gleamed in excitement and she ran a circle around her friend before forcing herself to sit. Acting like a kit in front of a warrior. How embarrassing. That felt strange...feeling embarrassed in front of her best friend. Lightpaw brushed it off as nerves since they hadn't spoken in a while.

"Of course I do," Skycloud laughed happily. "We're best friends, right?" It made him feel good to see Lightpaw excited to spend some time with him. "So what is it going to be? Cleaning out dens or hunting?"

"I was hoping you'd say that," he purred. "I wasn't looking forward to tackling any dirty moss. So where would you like to hunt?" He wanted her to choose because he knew of her struggles with hunting. This way she could pick a place where she'd be more comfortable. "It really doesn't matter too much to me just as long as we get to spend some time together."
Lightpaw thought about this seriously. She was so good in the water, but it was getting absolutely freezing and getting her paws wet didn't sound like a good time. Then she had an idea. "I still haven't been out to the Witch's House, but I've heard there's good prey there."
She leaned in close to her friend so she could whisper, "A warrior isn't scared of that, is he?"

Skycloud's spine tingled at the thought of going anywhere near the witch's house. He had been there a few times but never saw anything out of the ordinary. The stories that surrounded it was all that bothered him.
"Of course not," he meowed with more confidence than he felt. He didn't want to look weak in front of Lightpaw. "But what about apprentices?"
"Why should little apprentices be scared when there are big, strong warriors to protect them?" Lightpaw flicked her tail matter-of-factly and then used it to gesture that he should follow. "Let's get going then Skycloud. I'm ready to finally catch something."
The air was changing, and she could smell something different. "I think it might snow again."

He looked up at the sky and saw that the clouds were beginning to darken. "I think you may be right," he replied. "The clouds are darker than they were before. At least they're not like the thunderclouds we get in GreenLeaf. Let's go before they start dropping their snow." He wanted to get to the cottage and be away from it in short order.
Heading out, Lightpaw fell into easy step beside her friend. "I think today will be the day," she said, glancing over at him as she walked in the direction of the Witch's House. "I can feel it in my bones. I think today I'm actually going to catch something."
She shivered as the wind changed direction, blasting the side of her that wasn't blocked by Skycloud.

"So what would you like to be your first catch? Mine was a mouse, I think," Skycloud meowed. The wind ruffled his fur causing a chill to run along his spine. At least he hoped it was the wind that caused the chill. Yes! It had to be the wind! He was a warrior now, unafraid of anything!
"Something big, preferably. I have to make up for all the creature's I've missed." Lightpaw shivered, and finally she could see the looming den in the distance. Her pawsteps slowed and she suddenly regretted choosing to come here.

Not wanting to go any closer to the old den, Skycloud stopped and looked around. "Rabbits are pretty big but are hard to catch," he mewed as he sniffed the air for any prey scent. Or any weird scents too... "Don't smell any rabbits but there are some mice and birds around." He peered into the bushes for any signs of the critters.
She sighed. A mouse would have to do. "That's fine. Let's look around for a scent trail then." She took a few steps away from Skycloud to get his own scent out of her nose, but she remained closer than she should have for hunting. That den was scary, and now that she was close to it, Lightpaw didn't really want to be on her own.

A light breeze made a sighing sound in the trees near the cabin causing another chill to run up Skypaw's spine. The sooner they caught something the better. Turning his back to the cabin, he spotted some movement halfway up an oak tree. A gray bushy tail flicked out from behind the tree trunk. "Look there," he whispered to Lightpaw. "Wanna give it a try?"
Her eyes lit up. Of course she wanted to try. "I'm gonna get it - watch me Skycloud!"
The apprentice slunk toward the tree as quietly as possible. She looked back once to make sure her friend was watching and then continued forward, preparing to run up the tree behind the squirrel.

Skycloud watched intently as Lightpaw followed the squirrel. He was about to open his mouth and give advice but he kept it shut, more out of fear that he'd startle her prey rather than being accused of being bossy. I hope the squirrel comes down for her, he thought, keeping his eyes glued on her. He knew from personal experience, at least for him, it was easier to catch squirrels on the ground rather than trying to catch them in the trees. Those things seemed to defy gravity once they were in their leafy abodes. The way the stuck to the trunks and flung themselves from tree to tree was unnerving.

Lightpaw slunk up to the tree, discouraged when she saw the squirrel was most definitely not coming down. It looked like she was going to have to chase. As soon as her paws touched the tree, it seemed to sense her and scurried off. Her nose scrunched up and she turned around, shaking one ear in irritation.
"Looks like this one wasn't for me," she complained. Her eyes were trained on Skycloud but they drifted up as she felt something wet touch her. "Skycloud! Hey! It's snowing again!"
