Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
So recently I've been really thinking, and I wanted to spark some discussion. I have a handful of friends who have been interested in roleplaying/roleplay in general, and I've either joined Discord roleplay (since its honestly a bit more popular than Forum rp), or suggested a Forum RP. Recently, it's been Classic, simply because it is the one I'm most familiar with. I've had two major points; How confusing the site is, and how many Clans there are.
I'm NOT bringing this up to discuss the Clan number. Its a valid concern that newer people I've tried introducing to the site have brought up. I'm gonna drop it here though, and I don't want to discuss Clan numbers here at all, so please don't bring it up past this.
What I do want to propose is making the site more helpful to newer people, beginner roleplayers, etc.
Honestly, I think it'd be really helpful if we had that kind of section, especially for new members. Even if they are familiar with forum roleplay, that doesn't guarantee they're going to know how to use Proboards, or how to join a Clan right away, etc. Like I said, most people now use Discord etc, because its simple and easy. I really do stand by a point I made a while ago, that Classic would need newer members to really thrive.
This is the first thing new members see:
I'm not saying it'd be a definite and for sure thing to attract newer people, but I think it'd just be really helpful in general to have a section of the forum dedicated to new members. Like tutorials on how to set up character profiles, how to edit your own person profile, how to post threads, how to navigate the forum, etc. Because I don't believe there is a forum dedicated to that. I just think it'd be really important to have something easily accessible for new members. I dont think we should assume every person is accustomed to Proboards. Just like when we made the move, we were confused. I believe that making the site a bit more easy to navigate for newer people, under the assumption they don't know how anything works, would be a huge step in the right direction. :']
I absolutely agree that our site is inaccessible and hard to navigate sometimes, even for older users! I just taught someone a few days ago that clicking on the magnifying glass by the search bar lets you sort threads in all sorts of cool ways. That is a really unintuitive design for an important feature.
However, I'm hesitant to add any more boards: first, because we had a lot, but also because it seems equally confusing for new members to try to navigate between multiple boards just to get basic information. We do have some of those simple guides in the Help Section - do you think that's a good place for them? Could we pin a thread on the New Members board that links to those guides, to help new users locate them?
I think that would be a good idea tbh. Because I know that its linked at the top of the forum, I just think its kind of buried for something that's so important. I understand not wanting to add an entire new board, I just think it's kinda weird that roleplay stuff would be pushed above sections that could help new members + members alike. Idk. I definitely feel like helpful boards should always be featured first? That's just my opinion tho idk. I just want it to be easier for new users so we could possibly boost up the number of people willing to/wanting to join.
Hey Rika! I’m going to make this my personal project, and I would love some input from you. I have a few ideas on how do this from looking at some other sites while advertising WCC2, but I don’t have as much experience with discord rps. Your background in discord would be a big help to me, in making sure that the guides are easy to understand for someone coming from that kind of background. I have done forum rps for so long that it is easy to take some things as common knowledge that might not be. Would you mind messaging me on discord? That way we can talk and I can get your opinion on a few things 💕
