Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. Nightmarekit padded out of the nursery cave and out into the gorge. It was early morning and the sun was only just beginning to peak over the horizon, making her jet black fur look glossy and smooth. The crisp morning air made her shiver. Greenleaf was coming to an end and leafbare was approaching fast. From where she stood, she could see a few of the trees beginning to change color. Great, just before she's made an apprentice, leafbare approaches so she has to work extra hard to help out. She walked over to the river that ran through the gorge and took a few laps of the cool water, feeling refreshing on her dry tongue. woof
Days had passed but most things remained the same.
He was Crowpaw now, his father had escaped execution merely by being exiled instead, and his heart thumped a vicious rhythm- but most other things were the sane. He brought burning eyes everywhere he went, and more now then ever did the clan give him a berth, as with all the recent events he'd given up trying to convince his clanmates he wasn't a curse despite his name. They saw a dark force standing in his place, so that's what he would give them.
He almost didn't notice Nightmarekit in his brooding haze, but when he felt something jar him out of his thoughts, he blinked and let his fur fall flat where it had begun to ruffle. "Oh, hey," he greeted her, his voice lacking the aggression he was used to it carrying. It felt almost empty, untrue. Inwardly, he frowned, not sure how he'd lost so much of himself over the past few days. Maybe more things had changed than he'd thought
Nightmarekit nearly leaped out of her fur at Crowpaw's greeting and spit out the water that was in her mouth. "C-Crowpaw!" She wiped the dripping water from her chin and cleared her throat, sitting up straighter to make herself look a little bit bigger against the apprentice. "I didn't see you there..." She hadn't had much conversation with the tom. She mostly just observed and was surprised he had come to talk to her. "Do you need something?'
The scene was amusing, kind of cute, and brought forth a smile from his dark features that was reminscent of the kindness he used to emanate. It was true that he hadn't interacted much with Nightmarekit- but he knew her from spying her watching him, and not once did he ever see her turn her gaze scornfully. "No," he answered, then after a tick of silence, went on to ask, "What are you up to today? Any plans?
she was added as an apprentice so do you wanna continue with her as a kit or just pretend she was an app the whole time? xD
Nightmarepaw looked at the water she just drank from, then to the apprentices den, and then to Crowpaw. "Not particularly." She narrowed her sapphire blue eyes in suspicion. "Why?"
"I was gonna go check out the boneyard today. Do you wanna come with?" The tom spent less and less time in camp since being apprenticed, preferring to stay out in the territory and avoid most of their other clanmates, barring Honeysplash and his siblings. The boneyard was an area he'd yet to explore, and he sensed that Nightmarepaw had an adventurous curiosity rivaling his own.
"You want me to come with you?" She was surprised. He hadn't offered for her to join him any other time. "Uh, sure, I guess. I could go for a thrilling adventure." She stood up on her paws and walked passed him, flicking him on the nose with her tail tip. "If you can promise there will be danger."
His whiskers twitched in response to the boop, then he followed her out. "Danger is my middle name," he joked, but it was hollow. Crowpaw cast his doubt aside and did his best to focus on the present, trotting beside his clanmate and pretending his whole life wasn't a chaotic mess. His paws traversed steadily across the crags spanning SunClan's gorge until they reached the crest of a low hilltop, beneath which sprawled the boneyard. "Too late to turn back now, Nightmarepaw." He glimpsed at her as he said this, and his baleful eyes resembled haunting candlelight trapped behind a frosted windowpane.
She scoffed, "I'm not turning back. I laugh at the face of danger! Ha...ha...ha" she laughed on a mocked laughter as she stepped forward, taking the lead down the descend toward the boneyard with confidence. She halted at the edge of the boneyard and scanned the eery scenery. It was quite spooky but something about it made her grin. "You first? Or are you chicken?" She teased.
He had sauntered behind her during their descent to the threshold that separated them from the skeletal graves. Nightmarepaw's words brought a twinkle of mischief into his gaze, his tone deviant as he grinned, "Ladies first." Without further ago he took one inky shoulder and shoved it against her side, dislodging her from her perch and sending her tumbling. He followed with significantly more grace.
Nightmarepaw tumbled down from her perch, dust flying up as she rolled. She rolled to a stop at the bottom and stood up, her jet black fur covered in light brown dust. She let out a huff and shook the dust from her pelt. "Don't worry, your getting what's coming to ya, Chickenpaw." She smirked, calling him chicken for making her go first.
"I'm quaking in my fur," snorted 'Chicken'paw. The dust that lingered in the air began to settle and above them towered the remains of some great beast, hollowed eyes boring down at the two young felines. "I bet that was some type of predator that liked eating dusty apprentices," he whispered lowly in her ear.
The dead didn't frighten him nor did he believe that the cool surface of remains would shoot ice into his veins, but it did and Crowpaw blanched beneath his dark fur. "It's cold," he noted to the she-cat before removing his paw a lot more slowly than he would have liked.
"Well, duh. They're bones! There's nothing keeping them warm." Nightmarepaw responded, padding up to the great beast and touched it herself. "I wonder what kind of creature it is...or...was."
He grimaced and moved around it, observing the remains curiously. "Ghostcrown--" A pause here, a flicker of emotion flashing across his features, but without missing another beat, he continued, "--used to tell my siblings and I about huge snakes with crescent-moon claws and fangs twice the size of the largest forest cats that flew across the skies long, long ago. Maybe that's what they are," he mused.
"Never had a parent tell you stories before bed?" It wasn't a snip-- it was genuine, probing. Those memories of kithood, of nestling between his siblings as Ghostcrown regaled them stories and marvelous myths, were some of his fondest.
Nightmarepaw was taken by surprise at Crowpaw's bold question. "N-no" she responded, trying to keep the tough side of her up while she felt like breaking down. She was abandoned by her family and while Autumngossamer was a good motherly figure, she didn't get stories. Bloodystar was too busy taking over Sunclan to bond with her even though she was technically his kit and Autumn was always travelling between Sunclan and Dayclan. "But who needs to be told a bunch of lies? Impossible heroism, creatures that don't exist. What is the point of it, exactly? It's not like you'd ever see something like that."
He frowned at her assertion. "Because sometimes the fantasies are better than the reality," he told her in earnest, a note of strong conviction threaded into his tone. Nightmarepaw knew enough of what he'd endured when they were kits to know that Crowpaw's reality was not something anyone would desire, and rightfully so, which had him clinging to all the stories he was told and often his best friends were made up. A world with clawed snakes and winged beasts was wild, sure, but he couldn't be convinced it would be worse than his reality.
