Duskbriar watched her, noticing that the question seemed to dampen her spirits. She probably shouldn't have prodded so much. Glancing to the ground, she studied her paws for a moment before Moon took her aback with the question. Would she stay?
She hesitated to answer, not even knowing herself if she should or shouldn't. On one hand, it was a comfortable home with food for the time being. On the other, she didn't know if she entirely wanted to live with someone again. Not that Moon's company wasn't appreciated, but she was more scared of getting attached, if anything. Her eyes grew distant, a faraway look flitting across her face as she fought with her own will. Finally, she let out a small sigh and flicked her ears back cautiously.
"If you don't mind the company, at least for the time being, I wouldn't mind a warm bed. At least until your friends come back," Duskbriar relented, her stomach squirming with nervous energy. She'd already been offered to stay, so she might as well take the offer and go with it for the time being. "I won't expect any food to be caught for me. If you don't want me to stay in the barn either, I won't. Its just nice to be able to have a full belly for once."

Moon nodded slowly and smiled gently, scooting a little closer to sniff at the rabbit that was now only bone. "I'll enjoy the company, thanks." Her head raised and she glanced outside once more, frowning enthusiastically. "If they do come back, that is. They seemed pretty distant this time." She purred quietly and leapt up to her platform, dangling her paw. "I'd enjoy this barn all to myself. They sucked, honestly. Horrible company." She mumbled and found herself running outside the barn doors, standing up on her hind legs to glance out at the forest.
"Is that where you're from then?" She called back to Duskbriar, tail lashing as she sat down. Her eyes lit up with envy. She wanted to go so bad, but what would the others do? What if she couldn't find any food and end up like Duskbriar? It scared her, honestly.
An idea came to mind. What if she went with Duskbriar? .. No. It would be too much.

Duskbriar watched her, noting that she wished we could possibly have as much energy as Moon did. The roasted chestnut colored molly padded quietly after her, glancing past where she was staring and into the forest. She grimaced to herself, finding that she both desperately wanted to return. But then, there was also the fleeting terror of wanting to run from it. She let out a small sigh and glanced down at Moon, who she'd come to stand beside.
"Yes," she answered honestly. "I was born into a Clan. We lived up in the mountains, where snow was very constant and plentiful..." she trailed off, her eyes wandering to distant cresting mountains. They weren't terribly far, still. She wondered if her self conscious betrayed her, not wanting to truly escape the foreboding presence. She wanted as far away from it; but every time she turned, it seemed to never grow in distance. "I miss it. The company, I mean. It wasn't all bad; there were some cats who were kind to me."
She sat down, her tail flicking behind her and stirring dust. She couldn't return though, as much as her heart yearned to. She glanced down at her paws, flexing her claws a few times.

"..Then why not go back? I would personally do anything to get away from this lowlife, mangy place." Her eyes rolled as she glanced back up to her, tail thumping. It seemed like they were in the same boat; wanting to leave but not being able to. Her heart sunk and she scooted a little bit closer, pressing her small body into Duskbriar's for comfort.
She hated it, honestly. She had never done anything like it before. But it was a sign of comfort, she knew. After a moment she scooted back to her original spot and glanced out to the mountains. "A clan seems horrible, at least to me, but it would be better than this." Her voice raised and she sniffed the air in alarm. Fox. They were a common predator around here, and usually all she had to do was jump up to the roof of the barn. But it seemed closer this time.
Dismissing the thought, assuming it could be going for the pigs, she perked her ears up eagerly. "I get bored here a lot."

She was protruded from her thoughts as the other pressed closer to her, giving her a slight start. Though, she didn't mind much. The comfort was nice, and her words bothered her. Not that they were too personal, but that she could never truly admit why she couldn't go back. She almost got lost in her own thoughts again before detecting the tangy smell. Her body stiffened, and she let her ears flick forward now.
She only relaxed as Moon continued on, giving a small laugh and looking to her with a flick of her whiskers. "It's not all bad in a Clan. I guess it depends on the cat. I've never been good with others," she explained. They thought I was odd, she added silently, though she'd never breath a word. She had wanted a new start, and she'd gotten that chance. "There's a Leader, and a Deputy to help organize the Clan. A Medicine Cat for healing injuries. Warriors, who protected the Clan and hunted. That was what I was. Apprentices, who are trained to be Warriors. Kittens and Queens, and then Elders. The social system might have been messy, at best, but you could find a friend or two. Plus, you felt important. Like you were doing something to help others..."
She let her words trail off, noticing that her voice was growing increasingly laced with longing. When she was traveling, she tended to busy her mind. Then, the thoughts and feelings wouldn't catch up. But now, speaking about it openly... it felt real, and lonely. She shook her head, absently sighing. "Maybe someday I'll think about rejoining. But its nice depending on yourself, too. Others won't let you down, and you get to see and experience new things."

Interest began flooding into her head. Clan-life sounded so interesting and fun, way better than the life she currently lived. And despite how many cats would be there, it would be different in a good way.
"..That sounds really interesting. I'd love to experience that." Her head hung low with defeat, glancing to the mountains one last time before catching another whiff of fox. "Let's go back inside, I feel like a fox or two is close." She got up and walked alongside Duskbriar, careful not to walk under the other's paws, leaping up onto the windowsill from the shelves. "Here, I'll show you something."
As she waited for Duskbriar to follow her and get up to the ledge she waved her tail along the brim of the wall, and once she finally caught up her paw raised to point at things. "Might as well show you around." She let out an annoyed huff as she attempted to remember directions.
"Over there is the pigsty. As long as you don't get too close, the pigs are safe. They just mope around and snort all day." She wrinkled her nose, imagining the smell, before turning South. "And that's the hillside. Horses usually stay over there.. and they're more scared of us than we are of them. So just keep your distance." "And over here is the gardens. That's where you came from. Most prey is around there, so if you have no luck finding anything over here you can sneak around." Her eyes lit up and she looked back over to the larger molly, proud of herself for remembering every location. "Oh!" She jumped, turning back towards the outside world. "And the waterhole is over there. The twolegs call it something else but I can't remember. It usually floods when it rains, but it's not near anything else.. so just stay away entirely. It's also really deep down, and there's a weird bucket that's hooked up to the top that lowers in there. It's really odd.. and insane, if you ask me."

Duskbriar lingered only a moment longer, her eyes brushing the mountains again, before following Moon back inside. The warmth of the Barn felt nice compared to the growing chill in the air. She shuddered a little, following suit after the she-cat and nodding as she explained where things were. The mention of the water made her fur prickle with unease, and she had to fight away the panic. She just wouldn't go there. Puddles, or small streams nearby would do. She'd have to explore later on and see if the forest offered anything.
Letting the question escape her maw, she asked, "Have you ever explored the woods...?" She knew that it was far fetched, and possibly even a dumb one. She had a feeling Moon didn't go near the forest; but she didn't want to assume and voice it either. The familiar crackle of leaves underpaw would do Duskbriar some good, lift her spirits a bit. She didn't want to entirely admit she was afraid of water, and that she wanted to find a smaller source. So instead she flicked her ears back and hastily added, "Its okay if you haven't, I'm just curious is all."

"I.. haven't, no. I really want to but I'm uh.." She sneered. I'm not scared or anything. I just never have gotten around to doing it." It was an obvious lie, but she wouldn't let her dignity be ruined like that. "I'd like to though." Her head turned to look out towards the overgrowth of trees and her heart leapt. It excited her.
Finally letting out a small sigh her back arched in a stretch. "Well.. not that I can remember at least. I was born there and that's all I know."
"I just feel like I wouldn't last long, you know? I'm obviously strong and stuff but.. my size is an issue." She was embarrassed of herself this way. If only she wasn't the size of a leaf. "But it's okay here. There's food, shelter, and-" She stopped. The last word of the sentence would be family, but she had just remembered she had none there. "Nevermind."
The petite feline made her way off the windowsill and towards the back of the barn, sniffing at the rotting wood of the stables. She climbed up the fencing and sat atop, eyes glued onto the world outside. She couldn't escape the urge to run- and she knew that it would eventually get the best of her. Moon's paws wrapped around her collar and she attempted to pull it off, but as usual it stayed stuck around her slim neck.

Duskbriar watched her for a moment, a frown dimpling her brow as Moon spoke. She comfortably sank to her belly, turning to look back out at the scenery. "It probably doesn't sound super genuine, coming from a cat whose larger than you, but I know what its like to be judged by your height. I'm clumsy when it comes to hunting, and I got teased for it a lot," she offered hesitantly, trying for words of comfort. "But I trained hard and began to use other ways to catch prey. Maybe being silent and quick is good, but using tricks and tactics to my advantage helps me best."
She let her tail fall down the raft, swaying back and fourth as she glanced over at Moon and offered her a shy smile. "What I'm saying is that there are other ways to prove your worth, especially in a Clan. You can be small, but still be useful to others. All it takes is a new way of thinking."

Moon listened to her for a moment, ears perked up and attentive. After a short second of contemplating the other's words she nodded, tucking herself in and sitting with a slight hunch. "Yeah... thanks, I guess." Her voice was rimmed with slight sass, but she absolutely didn't mean it. Her nose twitched violently around as she sniffed the breeze as it neared noon, tail swinging in a rhythmic way.
In a low voice, attempting to talk to herself, she whispered: "Maybe we can both go out there sometime soon." But to her dismay, it was loud enough for Duskbriar to hear. She glanced away and her mind began racing. All she wanted to do at this point was go there. It seemed so mysterious, so big, so vast.. it was interesting to her. And it was such a common thing as well, to want to go out and explore. But the forest scared her.
"Um- anyways, what did you even get to do as a warrior? Like, it couldn't have been that fun.. was it?" Moon's emerald-green eyes rolled and her snout scrunched up.

Duskbriar had heard the comment, which made her bite back a little laugh; she figured it had been an involuntary comment. She didn't mind though, her ears flicking with amusement. "Well, a lot of things, really. Sometimes you have to patrol the border, to make sure enemy Clans aren't invading your territory. Other times, your simply checking the territory for foxes or badgers that might have moved in. That doesn't happen often though. Mostly, you hunt and defend your Clanmates. Rarely there are battles... and, eventually, if your well respected among the Clan, you have a chance at becoming Deputy," she explained.
It probably sounded very scary, but she tried to downplay it a bit. "It really isn't as horrible as it sounds, your often busy with doing tasks, or making friends..." she trailed off, shrugging a bit. "I mostly helped with defending, but that was something I enjoyed."
The dusk colored she-cat let her sentence fall there, surveying the forest again with a look of longing. She recalled the earlier comment Moon had made, and considered acting on that offer. She missed the way the sun glinted through the branches, casting shadows on the forest floor. The thought made her paws begin to work at the wood, a restless feeling surging through her veins. "You know, I wouldn't mind showing you the forest. I don't know it very well yet, but my Warrior skills aren't that rusty."

Badgers.. The fur on her neck raised and she couldn't help but let out a small groan of annoyance, paws swiping at the ground. "Badgers are HORRIBLE. They always tower over me." Her ears flattened for a moment but she let the comment go, listening to her discuss the happier side of clan-life. She knew it was worse than how Duskbriar described it, but she kept silent.
"Sounds fun." Her reply was sarcastic. Moon spread out across the fence and flexed her paws up into the air, toes spreading apart and her claws unsheathing as she traced the dust that floated onto her.
Then, she heard the comment that Duskbriar made. 'You know, I wouldn't mind showing you the forest.' That was all it took for Moon to leap out of her own fur, rolling off the wood and landing elegantly on her feet. "Well, what do we have to do around here? Let's do it!" Her tail sway enthusiastically, trotting over to the windowsill Duskbriar stayed on. Her head raised so that she could see her, even having to stand on her toes to get a good view.
"..Only if you want to, I mean." Her voice was edged with sass, trying to imply that she wanted to anyways.

Duskbriar felt was she starting to get a real read on Moon's personality, so she wasn't much surprised when she nonchalantly responded. Suppressing a smile, she leapt down from her perch and landed easily. The recent meals had been giving her much more of her strength back; soon, she might even look less like an alley cat and more like a sturdy Rouge. The thought was brushed away though as she led the way out and through the barn doors, inhaling sharply.
The fox scent was still there; but at least she could pinpoint the direction. Turning, she glanced back at Moon and said, "We can go to the woods outside where the Horse's are. The fox scent is coming from the other direction. That way, we won't run into an unwelcome surprise," the she-cat advised. Though she knew she could probably fight one off, it would be risky. She didn't want to get so hurt that she would risk infection, or death.

Once Duskbriar turned her back Moon smiled happily, letting out a "hmmph" sound in victory. Her tail curled above her in the air like a Cinnabon, quickly following after the larger molly that paced a few tail-lengths in front of her.
Soon she caught onto the whiff of air that Duskbriar also smelled. "Euggh.. yeah, let's go that way." The thought of actually encountering a fox made her shiver. Though she always saw them running around the area from her perch, she was too scared to follow them or face one on her own. She wouldn't say that, though. Following quickly after the taller she-cat she let herself relax. It was interesting being around someone twice as large as you are. Though it isn't rare, she's the largest that Moon's ever encountered. She made sure to go slow to not jingle her collar around and attract noise.
Once they neared the hills that the horses stayed she let out a calm breath, glancing up to Duskbriar with a kink in her neck. "There's a dirt pathway around the back here. It stays out of the way, pretty much goes directly into the forest." She took a gulp, voice high as if sucking helium, tail slightly quivering. This was it.

Duskbriar led the way through the grass, for once feeling more at ease by being out in the open sky. At least here she didn't feel like some Twoleg-built thing would collapse on her; or worse, she would be captured by them and made a Kittypet. The though drew a shiver down her spine. She almost didn't realize Moon was talking until she mentioned the path to the forest, which instantly made her ears perk forward in excitement.
Her paws were eager to escape under the canopy of leaves, but she calmed herself and glanced back at Moon. "It's not bad in the forest," she reassured. "There are lots of interesting things, and smells. You just have to keep your wits about you. If you smell danger, then you'll be prepared for it."
She felt as if she were probably speaking upon deaf ears, but she didn't mind. It was nice to ramble on about the forest for once. She padded along the worn dirt path, tail held high in the air now with anticipation. The rustle of leaves could be heard every so often from a gentle breeze; birdsong peppering the forest in a welcoming choir. She stopped at the edge of the underbrush, and looked back to make sure Moon was following.

As she followed, Moon was the complete opposite of Duskbriar. Her tail dragged between her legs, her ears pinned to her head, and her small body jumped at every new sound around them. At one point she even found herself cowering under the larger molly. "U-um.. How exactly far does the forest go?" She asked, collar jingling along with her paw steps, sides heaving in slow breaths.
It didn't take long for her tail to lift and her ears to rise. The birds fluttering from tree to tree were annoying but mysterious, the ground was an unusual grass, and the sky no longer shone except for numerous patches here and there from the treetops. "Do the trees always make that sound with their leaves?" She groaned, acting like a toddler, following closely behind the other. "...I like it."
The small breeze soon caught up to them and Moon's fur fluttered gently, eyes closing as she continued onward. This was already so much different from the farm; a good different. Why had she always been so scared to come here? It was paradise!

Duskbriar suppressed a laugh, her ears flicking as she watched Moon take everything in with apprehension, and then awe. "Yeah. The forest is never quiet, and its nice. I've always enjoyed being out here. Just feels right, to me," the molly responded with a smile, looking about the trees with a serene expression. She decided to pad off towards a clump of brambles and greenery; though most of it seemed to be wilting due to the coming cold seasons.
She scented the air, and caught traces of prey here and there. Nothing strong, though. She turned to Moon. "Have you ever caught forest prey? They're a bit different than farm prey. A bit more cautious, since they have to survive every day and scrounge for food," she asked, explaining how jumpy they were. "I have trouble with rabbits, since I'm so slow, and they have great hearing."

Moon watched curiously, sniffing at the clumps of brambles with caution. After a moment of digging she caught onto a sweet scent, moving her muzzle around the bush, catching the gleam of a berry in the middle. Her nose twitched vigorously before deciding against eating it. When she pulled out her face was covered in leaves, mixed with cobwebs and dirt. She shook it off with annoyance.
At Duskbriar's question she shook her head, ears raising instinctively to listen for the scrambling of feet or the whine of a mouse. When nothing returned the favor she slumped down. "The only thing I've ever caught are things from the farm, maybe a few mice if they stray that far.." The kittypet thought hard for a moment before shrugging the thought off, rushing back to Duskbriar's side.
The chirping of birds and squirrels up in the trees peaked her interest. Could she climb up there? Could she leap that high? Her mind was racing in excitement. "What kinds of prey are usually in the forest?" Moon spoke this while still looking up, catching a glance at a woodpecker hard at work on an oak tree.

Duskbriar had to consider this for a moment. Most of her life had been spent up in the harsh cold of the mountains, so she didn't have too much experience with warmer forest weather. She'd only been living alone for roughly six moons; and though it was a decent amount of time, hunting was scarce for her.
"Mmm... a lot of birds, any type you can think of, really. Robins are quite common among them. Squirrels, obviously. Mice, Thrush, and Voles as well. There are also Moles; but its hard to catch them since they burrow underground most of their life. I'd advise against eating them. They don't get a lot of sunlight. Other than those... you can possibly catch an occasional rabbit every once and a while," Duskbriar explained patiently. There weren't a lot of variety to choose from. With a smile she glanced at Moon and said, "Honestly, when I see something, I just go for it and try to catch it..."
The molly followed her gaze up the tree, to the squirrel sitting far above and nibbling on a nut. They wouldn't be able to catch it, without it knowing one of them was scrambling up the tree. Turning, she padded deeper into the forest, sniffing at a clump of moss or the base of a bush. It was nice to be in a place teaming with life again. And she nearly stepped on a small, slimy creature with a weird stone on its back. A snail. Taking care to move over it, she flicked her tail and glanced up at the sky through the trees.

Moon nodded intently, tail swaying above her as she followed behind the other carefully.
After a moment more of following Duskbriar she sniffed the air, paws slowing and breaths raspy. "Is there a river nearby?" The kittypet could smell it; the crisp air, the chlorine, and she could even hear it a little bit from afar. The tip of her ear twitched and she ran up to the larger cat's side. "I'm not thirsty or anything, just curious." And with that Moon continued onwards, sniffing at every new thing with excitement. This was all so new and exciting!
Finally she came across a run-down sequoia tree, branches broken and forming a convenient-yet-messy trail up to the roots. Glancing back to Duskbriar she leapt up enthusiastically, following the branches, and eventually finding herself at the base of the tree. Maybe a few feet up into the air, not too high. As she sat down in triumph, a small bug stepped over her paw. Then another. And another. She glanced down in disgust as a neat line of small, black bugs trailed over her paw and into the base of the tree. Some had small pieces of food in their mouths. Her gaze followed them down and onto the ground, where they all came from a small mound of dirt that stacked up a few inches high. "Eeeeewww, what are these things?" She spat, letting out a groan as she shook her paw clean and backed herself up.
