Warriors liked to speak of horrors and fantastical beasts when regaling the kittens and apprentices, boasting their accomplishments with hidden twists to them. On the tail end of both a dare and his own desire to prove his elders were not telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth, Breezepaw stood at the entrance to the old bear cave. The great, gaping mouth loomed over him: Nothing separated him and what laid at rest inside other than darkness. Try as he might, and oh was he trying, his eyes wouldn't acclimate and allow him to peer inside to gauge what he might come across. "Those fighting moves you showed me better work if we get jumped in here," he said to his companion, disguising the slight uncertainty in his tone with his easy humor.
"Well, they always work on Cricketpaw," said Fluffypaw, peering into the darkness with a degree of anxiousness that was far higher than her normal state, but still not on the level that a sane apprentice should be experiencing. The feeling churning in her stomach was only half panic, the other half a mixture of excitement and curiosity. "And I seem to take you down with them, most of the time," she added, teasing to lighten the mood and bumping his shoulder with hers playfully. "And you're pretty big."
Fluffypaw had never turned down a challenge in her life, and certainly not one from Strawberrypaw, of all cats. She was going to walk in that cave, and she was going to bring back a pebble from it, and if she had to fight a bear to do it well then it was lucky she and Breezepaw had been working on their moves. "We'll be fine, as long as we remember to watch each other's backs."
He took comfort in Fluffypaw's touch. He'd never admit it to her, but she was one of the few cats who filled Breezepaw with a true confidence rather than the show he put on just so others wouldn't see that he wasn't the fearless tom he claimed to be. "Did you just call me fat?" Teasing, he returned the bump, then released a long sigh to expel the noxious combination of anxiety and thrill from clouding his senses. Had any cat other than Strawberrypaw challenged him, he'd have called their bluff; but something about his past confrontations with the she-cat compelled him to think there was something she knew about the cavern that they didn't, thus prompting him to accept it.
"I got your back as long as you have mine," he agreed. A secondary breath, this time a stabilizing inhale, readied him for their quest. "One pebble from the deepest reach of the cave. We got this." Breezepaw wasn't sure who he was trying harder to convince: himself or Fluffypaw.
Not wholly convinced he was ready, but unwilling to let actual fear set in, he took the first step and felt a chill sweep through him as the atmosphere shifted. It was stuffier, and where his fur was previously warmed by the sun, the bear cave offered no such reprieve from the chilling darkness.
"No, just the perfect size to hide behind," teased Fluffypaw, which, considering how much mass her pelt lent her, was really not much of a reassurance. "I have your back," she assured him earnestly, a more serious air coming over her as the gaping darkness of the cave loomed over them.
Both heat and light faded as she took her first steps into the cave, subconsciously moving closer to Breezepaw so that she could assure herself he was still there through the radiation of his body heat while her keeping her eyes to the front, for all the little good it did her to stare into impenetrable darkness.
Perhaps he might have saved his jeering for later, when they'd retrieved their designated trophy and could bask in accomplishment, but what better time to rile the fluff-armored apprentice than when they were quaking in their paws? Slowly, his eyes adjusted to the darkness, the sunshine behind them growing bleak the more distance that came between them and it. "If I find the pebble first, you owe me a giant feast- as much as I wanna eat, 'kay?"
"I haven't even been in the mud today," Fluffypaw complained half-heartedly, although truth be told the nickname was almost beginning to grow on her. Almost. "I am a little scared that you're going to sneeze and wake up every predator in the forest though, Sneezypaw," she teased right back, squinting into the darkness ahead of them.
It was never ideal to have the sun at your back. All of the light coming into the cave was behind them, meaning that they would be lit up in perfect silhouette for anyone or anything inside the cave already to see coming, while they were staring into the darkest parts of the cave. But Fluffypaw's eyes were beginning to adjust, revealing nothing but rocky walls.
"Maybe it'll scare everything in the other direction," snickered Breezepaw. He flinched backwards into Fluffypaw as his paw touched something undeniably menacing- and then he reddened when he realized it was just a rock. An undeniably menacing rock. "Watch your toes," he advised, thankful that the darkness would hide the embarrassing shade of pink he was turning.
