Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. Fluffypaw was proud of herself. A natural-born hunter she was not, but she had been putting in the work and it felt like her efforts were finally starting to pay off - this morning's expedition had yielded two plump voles and a not-half-bad squirrel, which was more prey than she had ever been able to lay claim to before. She trotted back into camp with her head held high, blissfully unaware of all the burrs stuck along her back and tail from the bush she had stalked through to get her squirrel. It was hard to notice things like that sometimes, given the volume of fur that the long-pelted tortoiseshell was carrying around with her on any given day. Happily, the apprentice dropped her catch atop the fresh-kill pile, for once not feeling embarrassed of what she was able to contribute.
Stormkit sat by herself in a far corner of the nursery. The older kits' jeers about her ears were swimming through her mind as she sat absentmindedly batting at a small clump of moss. At this point it seemed a frown had permanently found its way onto her face. Her mother was fast asleep not too far from where Stormkit sulked, but the kit was determined not to bother her about the teasing again. The giggles coming from the group of kits across the den were getting to her once again and she was struggling to keep her cool. With a heavy huff she batted the clump of moss as hard as she could towards the small group of kits on the other side of the nursery, ignoring their mews of surprise as she turned and stalked out into the main cavern, her large ears pinned back in annoyance. She sat heavily, glancing around, her attention caught by a very fluffy she-cat that was walking towards the fresh-kill pile, mouth filled to the brim with the spoils of her successful hunt. Stormkit noticed a good amount of burrs stuck in the other cat's fur. Unaware that she was staring so intently, Stormkit scrunched her nose at the burrs, imagining having to pull them out of her own fur. The image in her mind had her huffing in annoyance again.
She would never have admitted it, but there was a glimmer of hope in Fluffypaw's chest that one of the warriors would see her catch and be at least a little bit appreciative of the efforts - but a surreptitious glance around revealed only a rather annoyed-looking kit looking in her direction. What could she have done to inadvertently offend a kit? Maybe she's just in a bad mood, Fluffypaw thought. "Hi, uh, Stormkit," she said, it taking her a moment to remember the kit's name, having been out of the nursery for a couple of moons by now. "You okay?"
The young kit startled slightly as the fluffy she-cat's voice pulled her from her thoughts.
"Oh, I..." Stormkit trailed off her gaze lowering to the ground in embarrassment.
She heard her mother's chiding voice in her mind "Now, now, you shouldn't stare at the ground so much. You want others to know you're confident and capable! Lift that chin little one, don't let them get to you."
She shook her head slightly, lifting her gaze to look back up at the she-cat. "I'm okay!" She responded in what she hoped was a much less wavering tone. "I was just thinking how much I'd dislike having all those burrs in my fur." She continued, tilting her muzzle towards the mess of burrs in the fluffy she-cat's fur.
She heard another burst of giggles from the nursery behind her and her ears immediately pinned down, her form shrinking as her gaze once again fell towards the ground.
"All these bu-? Oh, not again," sighed Fluffypaw, twisting her head at an uncomfortable angle to get a good look at her back. "You know I never seem to notice in the moment, but then it comes time to groom at night and suddenly there's all these things stuck in my pelt. Short-haired cats are lucky," she said, taking a seat next to Stormkit and starting to tease the closest burr she could find gently out of her fur. Her ears flicked back towards the nursery at the sound of kit laughter, a frown drawing across her face as she saw Stormkit's expression fall. "What's so funny in there?"
The young kit lifted her head slightly, her gaze drifting from Fluffypaw to the nursery entrance and back. "Me..." She muttered softly. "My...my ears, the other kits, they..." Stormkit trailed off, her gaze once again falling to the ground at her feet. Again, her mother's words echoed in her mind as the kit took a deep breath, straightening up and attempting to hold her head high.
"They're just jealous at how good I can hear things!" Stormkit blurted out, a look of determination settling over her face. She still hadn't fully unpinned her ears though, a small part of her dejected from the teasing. "At least...that's what my mom says. She says they're just jealous 'cause I'll be a better hunter and a good listener, and that's why they say such mean things." She flicked her tail towards the nursery, shooting a disdainful look over her shoulder as she did.
"Your ears?" Fluffypaw blinked, staring at the kit's ears. They were rather large, now that she thought about it, though she wouldn't have noticed otherwise - which had more to do with her own general obliviousness than anything else. She felt a pang of sympathy for the kit, having endured some teasing herself in her lifetime. "You know, back when I was in the nursery, the other kits made fun of me sometimes. Someone said I had more fur than brains once, but they weren't laughing so much when it got cold and they were all shivering with their thin coats. Maybe your mom's right, that hearing thing is gonna come in handy once you get apprenticed."
Stormkit looked up at Fluffypaw, her ears gradually standing up straighter as she listened to the she-cats story.
"More fur than brains? Someone really said that?" The young kit scrunched her face up momentarily before continuing. "Well they were definitely wrong! You brought back so much prey just now! You have to be extra smart with those hunting skills!" Stormkit beamed. "I hope I'm as smart and as good a hunter as you someday."
Stormkit giggled at Fluffypaw's mention of the cold. "I bet they were all super jealous during leaf-bare. You must have been snuggly warm!" She smiled and hummed to herself. "Maybe my mom really is right."
As far as Fluffypaw was concerned, that was the greatest compliment she had ever received in her short life. She had been working so hard on her hunting skills, and evidently it was finally paying off in praise and admiration from her clanmates. A less easily pleased apprentice might have found praise from a kit less worthwhile than praise from an experienced warrior, but Fluffypaw didn't bother to think about that. She drew herself up to her full height, chest puffed out - not that it was easy to tell beneath her puffy pelt. "It's all about the hard work, you know, if you put the effort in it really pays off! And trust me, everyone will be scrambling to catch up to you with those ears. I bet you can hear the prey from here!" she said, beaming down at Stormkit.
"You really think so?" Stormkit marveled, eyes alight with awe and admiration. She felt a surge of hope run through her. Here was another cat that believed in her. "I'm gunna put the hardest work in, just you wait! I'll show those other kits!"
She scrunched her face momentarily, ears swiveling as a look of concentration came over her. Her eyes darted to the shadows along the side of the nursery entrance. She had heard prey! Well, calling it prey may have been a bit of a stretch. It was a small beetle moseying along the cave floor. A worthy opponent in the young kits eyes. She fixed her target in her sights and dropped into a wobbly crouch, stepping not so lightly towards her prize. Her tongue stuck out of her mouth in her concentration as she clumsily drew herself forwards. A wiggle started in her tail-tip, moving along her spine as she prepared to pounce.
She sprang forward, stumbling slightly over her clumsy kitten legs, but she managed to bring a paw down on the beetle nonetheless. She squeaked with joy as she batted the beetle back towards her previous spot near Fluffypaw. She turned and leapt towards the beetle again, wavering as she landed and losing her balance, tumbling into Fluffypaw's side.
"I guess I'll still need a bit more hard work." Stormkit mused, a slight giggle escaping as she righted herself. "Sorry about that." She added, scuffing the ground with a paw in embarrassment.
Fluffypaw swelled even further with pride. Her protege - sometime in the last five minutes she had mentally declared herself a mentor figure to this poor child - was a born hunter already! Fluffypaw had caught many a leaf or twig in her nursery days, but moving prey had always escaped her uncoordinated kitten paws.
"See, you're way ahead of everyone already," purred Fluffypaw, pinning the beetle down with a paw as Stormkit lost her balance. "Don't worry, balance is the hardest part."
The young kit looked up with a smile plastered on her face. Another round of giggles could be heard coming from the nursery, but Stormkit ignored it, licking a paw and swiping it over her ear. "I like you! You're nice!" She declared matter-of-factly with a small nod of her head. "How do I get better at balancing though?" She added, a slight tilt to her head as she mulled the thought over.
Fluffypaw's ego had never been so inflated, and showed no signs of bursting now that Stormkit had pumped it full of assertions that Fluffypaw was not only a good hunter, but both smart and nice to boot. "Well, you just have to be really careful how you have your weight distributed," said Fluffypaw, bouncing to her feet. With a dramatic flourish of her tail, which still had a burr securely nestled into the plumes of fur on the end of it, she demonstrated her own hunting crouch. It was still shoddy compared to what your average warrior would have been able to show off, but it was a drastic improvement from what Fluffypaw's crouch had looked like less than a moon ago and with her recently boosted ego she felt like she was well on her way to being the best hunter around.
(Sorry for the wait! I had a family emergency and had to travel out of state kind of last minute!)
Stormkit practically beamed at Fluffypaw as the older she-cat demonstrated a hunting crouch. The young kit's eyes were as big as saucers as she studied her form, mentally trying to memorize how to place her own paws. Without really thinking she began to try and mimic Fluffypaw's form, albeit unsuccessfully. Her small kitten frame didn't allow her to distribute her weight quite well enough, and her short tail wasn't nearly long enough yet to help substantially with her balance either.
"I'll show them..." She mumbled to herself as she began to lower into a crouch. About halfway down she wobbled, catching herself as she sat with a huff. "Practice makes per-" The young kit couldn't stop the yawn that interrupted her mantra. "-fect." She shook her head as she finished yawning. "Oh, you missed a burr there in the end of your tail." She added, nodding towards Fluffypaw.
