Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The feline sat on the wall by the abandoned house, her tail curled around her paws. The scene was almost picturesque, the Tsar looking at the moon as its gentle light bathed her silhouette. She had little patience for these kinds of moments, the ones where she was doing something as beneign as looking at the sky. There was no time in her schedule to fit such moments in, not at this point. The only reason she was out here at all was because she had organized meetings with all of the felines she was considering to invite to the game that would help her determine her boyar. Each night, she would meet with another of the cats. It would be an interview of sorts, to make sure these were the felines she wanted to give a chance. However, unlike an interview, it wouldn't all be questions. At the conclusion of each interview, she would tell each cat she had spoken with to meet Cynder at the hollows in a week's time at the very moment of sunset.
This was her third night of such interviews. The first night had been with Galadriel, her cousin. The second was Hadley, her sister. This third night was dedicated to Everette, her brother. She was naturally hesitant to hold an interview with him after their other brother, Sammy, had to be removed from office. However, there was an interest she had in the sibling who didn't fit the standard Harlow body type. He was different from the others, and she figured it might be helpful to at least talk to him, to cover her bases. She also had the sense that he enjoyed the game of manipulation nearly as much as she did, and if nothing else, it was entertaining to have a battle of wits.
Her thoughts were interrupted as her ears then pricked at the sound of upcoming footsteps. She didn't turn towards the sound, nor did she take her eyes off of the moon. "I appreciate you meeting me here," she meowed as the cat came closer to her.
“I do as you command.” His tone was rather light as he teased her, though he always made sure to stop just before the threat of physical harm would come into play. Everette has always been good at walking the line. He gathered himself and kept up onto the wall next to his sister. He had several ideas of what might be requested of him, though it was clear this meeting was not due to either wanting to strengthen family bonds. “So do I get a new mate or am I up for promotion?” Everette looked over at his sister. The only other idea he had was that she wanted information, though he was sure that is what Cynder was for. While his comment might have been a jab at Kerrigan he was rather impressed how she turned around the stolen kit situation. The tabby was however almost positive he wasn’t supposed to know about that deal, yet he got himself around enough.
Everette has never been particularly close to Kerrigan, no one was it seemed. He had made somewhat of an effort here and there to socialize with his other siblings when he felt like it. Otherwise he was off with his select group that was made up of both friends and underlings. He lead at interesting life he though when he would take a moment to step back and look at what he has done so far. Part of that of course was due to Kerrigan, the power he had been handed had helped. Still just like any other cat his life rested in the Tsar’s paws.
She tipped her head down at him at his words, looking for the first time at her brother. She offered no smile; Kerrigan had little time for smiles. After all, this was a business meeting, not a meeting between intimates. Perhaps that was one of the problems that the Tsar had: cats did not tend to get close to her. She kept everyone at a cool distance, equally because it was easier that way and because fewer cats in her intimate circle meant fewer cats could turn against her. Loyalty was something that she demanded of those who were allowed in her internal circle, and it appeared that few of the cats of BrookClan, even those of her family who owed everything to her, were able to be the kind of loyal the cat wanted. This made her life rather lonely. When you kept people at a distance, there was no one to be there’s for you when you needed someone. Cynder was no therapist, and her other closest friend lived across an entire forest.
This coolness would have been strange if Everette hadn’t been her brother. Few cats ever saw her naturally distant, methodically calculating nature unless she was angry. Of course, she was not uncommonly angry, but under normal circumstances, Kerrigan was a charismatic, benevolent dictator to those who were under her. She was warm and the kind of leader that you would want to follow, at least in most circumstances. However, that facade often dropped when she was around her siblings. This wasn’t to say she was naturally unkind, but she did not need to keep the alligience of these cats that bore her blood. It was obvious that they would support her or leave. This meant the business aspect of this endeavor would be much easier; she did not have to tip toe around other cats’ feelings.
After a prolonged moment of looking at him, her lips twitched slightly. “Very good, I appreciate that.” He really had no choice whether or not to meet her there. No one in BrookClan particularly had the choice to ignore her calls. “Is there one of which you would prefer? I suppose I could make either happen.”
Everette thought for a moment, in either situation he would be a pawn. “I rather stay away from a relationship,” he paused for a moment trying to think how to finish “they tend to get in the way.” He thought back to his now deceased cousin. To be fair that had been love or lust, both rather messy feelings in his opinion. The tip of his tail twitched slightly against his side as he took of moment of thought. There was no doubt what she wanted him for as he had heard around camp that she had already interviewed two other cats. Yet a little thought poked it’s way into his head, making him wonder if his sister wanted him to spy on the other cats and tell her there secrets. While he was by no means opposed to that, this meeting was a touch to dramatic for that.
Clearing his throat, Everette spoke once again. “Though I truest do inquire about the purpose of this meeting.” A position of power was something he had always craved and yet had constantly tried to shove away. While he did respect his sister he has seen what the power she had taken has done to her. Power was not something to be taken lightly and yet he still craved it. Perhaps it was just in his blood.
Her gaze changed for a moment as she considered the comment he made about relationships. "You are correct about that," she agreed with him, although the look in her eyes didn't change for another moment. This comment had struck a nerve with her somehow, yet it wasn't apparent how. After all, the feline had not been in a relationship her brother would know about, and the she-cat in which she pined over was part of a secret in which she held mostly to herself, close to her chest. He was right, romantic affection did get in the way. Most affection did. She shook her head after a moment, trying to remove such thoughts from her focus. Out of any time to consider such things, this was the absolute worst.
"As you very well know, we have recently lost our boyar." There was an air of bitterness to her voice. Although she had found Sammy too soft to truly be worth keeping around in the position, his betrayal in front of the whole group was something that hit close to home for her. That, on top of the rumor that he had informed Castiel, an enemy combatant, that she planned to attack the Regime, meant that the bitterness was deserved. "I am looking to replace him, which means I have gathered three felines as potential candidates for the role." She paused for a moment, her gaze trailing to her sibling.
"I intend to have my position filled within the week, and you are one of the lucky few who have landed an interview for the throne. There will be three parts to this to test you very closely. The first will be a simple interview like any other interview. I will ask you questions up to three at a time, and you will remember and respond to each of them. They will be of various nature. Some will be rather simple. What is your favorite spot in the territory and why? Things like that. Others will be more philosophical: is it better to be feared or loved? There will be no right or wrong answers; the excersise just seeks to make it so I understand you on as deep of a level as possible. I will comment to some of your responses, others I will not. The second activity will be a showcase of physical skill. You may chose if you would rather hunt or fight, and based on the decision, you will complete a task. The last activity will be spiritual. I will explain that further when we get to it."
She paused for the briefest of moments, tilting her head slightly. "If you succeed in the interview, you will get invited to the game. If you fail, I have no interest in pursuing the possibility of promoting you. Do you understand and accept these conditions?"
Everette hummed softly as he listened to challenge ahead. “I of course accept, I would be a fool to not.” Though the fact that failure would mean he would never again be considered never worried him, either his sister, later on, or a future Tsar would need a Boyar. He was blood after all and if Kerrigan was anything to show, his blood would continue to rule for many generations. So yes he would enjoy a promotion now but it wasn’t like he would have a chance later on. Yet a touch of impatience was within him and made him desire it now. Everette was not a fan of the saying all good things come to those who wait. He would much rather got out and hunt it down himself, or at the very least send out a minion to get it.
With a twitch of his whiskers he turned his head to him. “I do have to ask if these tasks shall all take place tonight or over several days?” He could see the benefit of having it all in one night. He would grow tired and still have to work to the highest standard. It could very much stimulate the stress of ruling. Then again seeing cats save up their strength would show off their best skills. Either would be interesting. Though it might all depend on if Kerrigan was looking for a general or a simple stand in if she chose to go to the front lines herself. It was times like these the brown tabby wishes he knew his own sister better. He just could not get in her head like he could some others.
