The she-cat nodded and moved closer, realizing for the first time how foolish she must have looked to Earlybloom when she was trying to pick the berries with her paws. Heat in her cheeks, she leaned forwards and carefully grasped the base of the berry, pulling it off in one quick motion and placing it on the ground. Unlike her first try, this berry was in one piece and still perfectly usable. "That's so much easier," she mewed, pride radiating from her voice. Though she might act mature for her age, the she-cat was still only six moons old and her mind began to wander slightly. "Will I ever meet Chestnutpaw?" she asked, voicing a question she'd been wondering without realizing it. "Do medicine cats ever meet one another? I can't imagine only being supposed to work with Firetooth my whole life."

"Great job! I expected you to try tugging it free slowly. And if you tug quickly the berry comes off easy, but do it slow and you'll pierce the berry or it won't completely come off the stem, which means you'll get a squishy berry, so always be quick," she meowed, not disguising her pride in Mistralpaw. She believed completely in positive reinforcement and letting these cats know she cared, it made them want to learn. And that was absolutely key for medicine cats, and witches. "I suspect you will," Earlybloom replied patiently, gesturing to Mistralpaw to practice again on the juniper berries, "medicine cats have gatherings, they mingle. And one day Firetooth and I will be gone. You'll both be the medicine cats of your clans, you may even need each other's help one day."

Mistralpaw had started to tug another berry lose when Earlybloom mentioned her and Firetooth's deaths and accidentally bit down on the berry, resulting in the juice and pulp to burst in her mouth and on her muzzle. Spitting out the mush, she looked embarrassed and kept her head down. Though her mentorship with Firetooth wasn't great, she hadn't considered that one day she wouldn't have him to turn to for help, as much help as he gave. And Earlybloom, this nice she-cat? Dead? Death hadn't really crossed Mistralpaw's mind until that moment, despite being left for dead as a kit herself.
Finally, she pulled herself out of her thoughts and mewed, "Sorry, I didn't mean to waste it. I was just not thinking, I guess." She leaned forwards, and with careful determination, plucked another two berries from the branch in the same way as she had the first until she had three berries on the ground. She saw an oak tree nearby and retrieved a leaf before Earlybloom could chastise her for ruining the berry. "Could you show me how to wrap it?" Facing her mistakes had never been her strong suit, and she hoped to distract the WinterClan Witch in whatever way she could.

Earlybloom could guess what had made Mistralpaw ruin the bury and she was sympathetic. She'd become rather blatant about death since becoming a witch, you saw a lot of it. But this cat was hardly more than a kit and she could imagine death being a scary concept for her. Before she could think of what to say Mistralpaw had picked two more berries and fetched a leaf. Earlybloom flicked her tail and nodded, "roll the berries to the center of the leaf, this is green leaf which is good. Brittle leaves won't work. When you're ready to pick the leaf wrap up carefully take four corners of the leaf in your mouth. To store leaf wraps I usually use a bit of sap to seal them shut."
She paused for a moment before deciding to address what she'd talked about, "I think we should discuss what startled you earlier, I can guess what bothered you but perhaps you should explain it to me."

She began to roll up the berries, using the motion as an excuse to keep quiet, but once everything was wrapped up, she couldn't delay any more and had to speak. "What do you mean, bothered me earlier?" she asked, looking at Earlybloom with questioning eyes. She knew exactly what the Witch was asking, but even for a healer she respected she wasn't about to open herself up like that. "I wasn't bothered by anything, just a newbie's mistake." She tried to turn the conversation, and added, "I'm sure you must think I'm such a klutz, but I promise I'm normally much more delicate than this. What next?" If she could just push past this conversation, everything would be fine. Firetooth wouldn't push. She supposed that was one of his finest points.

"I know you're not a klutz," she meowed immediately, looking at the apprentice as though she could see right through her words. "I know what got to you was me mentioning the deaths of your mentors. I'm going to assume death isn't a subject you're eager to talk about. But you need to be prepared for it. I was 7 and half moons old when my first patient died on me. And I've lost several since then. Do you think I handled this well? I absolutely did not. But I would have been much, much worse if not for the fact that I understood death. So, I won't push you on it now. But I want you to think about the fact that you will, with one hundred percent certainty, see a cat die someday. And you'll definitely be without Firetooth or me one day." Her voice was gentle, almost apologetic, but she spoke with the frankness one of her apprentices deserved. She, as a personal rule, held nothing back.

Mistralpaw's defensive nature sprung up like a snake, biting at whatever was nearest. "I'm not upset, Earlybloom! StarClan, just leave it be. Not everything has to have a deeper meaning - I was just clumsy and messed up a berry!" Sparks jumped in her eyes, but her temper calmed almost immediately, leaving her breathing hard but silent. She had promised the Witch to respect her, but not everything needed to be analyzed. She inhaled and closed her eyes, following the motions her mother had taught her to cool her temper when it flared, and when she opened them she looked contrite. "I'm sorry. Just, let's keep going and maybe talk about this later, okay?"

Earlybloom, for her part, looked unimpressed by the anger but there was an air of disappointment about her as she stood, "the leaf wrap will dry out quick, best get it stored before it dries out. You'll easily find sap if you look for it on tree trunks. Don't use honey, it attracts a ton of ants." She seemed distant now, there was a hardness to her that she usually kept locked away. Thoughts swirled in her mind she very much didn't want to dwell on. "Now, go home. Tell Firetooth you recognized the berries as juniper from the old SwiftClan store. He won't think to question you." As she padded away she threw over her shoulder, "tomorrow morning, same place. We'll go over some basics. Goodnight, Mistralpaw."
figured we could do a time skip to tomorrow, seemed like the tension was a fun way to end lesson one xD

( perfect timing, I'm about to go to bed and poor mistral and think on what she's done xD )
Mistralpaw felt the disappointment radiating off of her new mentor and wanted to kick herself for being so foolish. Of course the first cat that actually wanted to help her would be run off by her legendary temper. She nodded, miserable, at Earlybloom's words and watched as the other she-cat walked away, feeling very much like it wasn't just the cat, but her entire future, slowly passing the invisible border she couldn't follow. She did as she was told, musing over everything she'd learned as she found some sap to dab on the leaf bundles before taking them back to camp. That night, she tossed and turned in her nest, sure Firetooth would snap at her to be quite at some point. The idea of her mentors' deaths weighed heavily on her, but like she'd promised Earlybloom, she thought over them long and hard. She hadn't gotten any rest to speak of when she emerged from the medicine cat den, and looked worse for the wear. Her eyes were red and her pelt rumpled, but she quickly ate breakfast and groomed herself before slipping out of camp. The dawn patrol had just gotten back and the rest of camp wasn't rising just yet, so she had an easy time slipping out of camp and back to the WinterClan border. She would talk to Earlybloom about what happened yesterday - it's the least she could do.

(xD awesome, i'm about to pass out myself.)
She didn't return to camp right away, instead she went to the graves of her lost patients, sitting beside them long into the night silently. Earlybloom tried looking at the graves with the eyes of an apprentice, trying to understand her discomfort. Earlybloom hadn't ever feared death or avoided the topic, she'd been exposed at an early age. And though she'd been truthful about when she lost her first patient, she'd known death long before that. When she finally did return to camp her mind was full of storm clouds and exhaustion weighed heavily on her. The next morning she woke up tired, scheduling a lesson with Chestnutpaw for later. For now she wasn't going to tell her pupil about the apprentice who'd soon be waiting at the border. Without breakfast and just a quick wash she was gone, padding hurriedly to the border. As she walked she began feeling better, optimistic again. By the time she spotted the apprentice through the trees her calm demeanor had returned and she greeted the apprentice with warmth, launching quickly into their lesson. "Today we'll be covering some plants that do well with water, since SwiftClan's usual territory is quite watery. But first, I wanted you to tell me about these again," she gestured to the juniper berries expectantly.

Mistralpaw had been expecting more chastisement from Earlybloom that morning, and had already adopted a penitent expression. When the WinterClan she-cat began to lecture, however, she was relieved to forgo any more conversation about death, and the apology that she had prepared that morning disappeared from her tongue. If Earlybloom was going to ignore the problem, so was she. "The berry is the edible bit, used for shortness of breath, anxiety, and to give a cat strength. They should be picked from the base of the berry, and can travel relatively well if wrapped in a leaf securely." She flicked her gaze up to the Witch hopefully, sure she must have gotten everything right.

"And bellyache," she reminded, though she sounded pleased. "You've got a good memory for herbs, you'll be thankful for that when we really get into them all. Now, do you know any others? Has Firetooth showed you any?" Earlybloom was curious about the extent of Firetooth's neglect. And she was also wanted to be careful not to tread near the subject of death. When they covered poisons they'd need to talk about it again, but what use was making the apprentice uncomfortable now? If she pushed there was a chance Mistralpaw would withdraw and Earlybloom didn't want to do that to the young cat. She needed to trust Earlybloom, not feel attacked by her.

"He's taught me the basics," she replied, though she was unaware what Earlybloom might consider the basics. "Poppyseeds for pain and sleep, cobwebs to stop bleeding and bind wounds, burdock leaves for healing wounds." Mistralpaw glowed under Earlybloom's praise, lighting up from the inside. It felt good to be complimented, to be told she was right and still corrected in a way that didn't feel like she was the dumbest cat in the world. She had always been proud of her memory, able to recall names and faces almost perfectly, and was relieved to head she was coming into healing with such a skill.

"Okay," she meowed, flicking her tail thoughtfully, "burdock root is traditionally used primarily for rat bites, it stops infection in them. It does help heal other sores and infections as well, but it can give cats bellyaches if they eat too much. Luckily, we just add the pulp to the wounds and it numbs them and heals them." She tried to seem annoyed with Firetooth as she added, "additionally, and I'm sure he mentioned this, be very careful of the amount of poppy seeds you give a patient. They are small but potent, and too many is never a good thing unless its to aid in a peaceful -," she stopped suddenly, changing the subject at the realization that she almost brought up death again. "Anyway, be sure not to give poppy seeds to a nursing queen."

{ { sorry it took so long to reply! } }
"No poppyseeds to a nursing queen," she repeated, cementing the rule in her brain. "And burdock roots are good for numbing and healing wounds. Got it." She nodded, ignoring the catch in Earlybloom's voice when she began to broach the topic of death. "I have a little knowledge of chamomile and lavender as calming and strengthening herbs. There's a cat in my clan that's convinced she has a broken heart and that she needs herbs to heal it." Mistralpaw rolled her eyes in disdain, clearing disliking the patient. "I just give her some of the two to get her out of my fur since I know they can't hurt her."

{ oh it's totally fine c: }
Earlybloom laughed softly, though it sounded half pitying about the broken hearted cat, "I once had a warrior who came to me everyday claiming to have walked on a thorn, but I never found one. Eventually I just started giving him dandelion, since it's a widely available painkiller. Sometimes there's cats with phantom illnesses, they can be quite challenging. If your patient is like mine, they will heal themselves in time."

{ { AH I DID IT AGAIN I'M SORRY XD } }
"Yeah, Firetooth claims it's a legitimate illness, but she gives me so much attitude about taking her herbs that I'm liable to just let her abstain and see how far it gets her." Though her words were quite harsh, it was clear Mistralpaw wouldn't do something like that by the kind look in her eyes. "Anyway, onwards, right? I know there are certain properties that tree bark have, because that's what Firetooth and I are collecting the most of right now since many of the herbs in our territory haven't come up let, but he won't tell me what they are and what they do."

i am so terribly sorry it took so long for this
Earlybloom could certainly relate to that frustration, stubborn patients were incredibly challenging for her to deal with. When Mistralpaw mentioned the tree bark Earlybloom cocked her head, "he won't tell you? Why? Do you know which tree he'd getting bark from?" Firetooth seemed to her an exceedingly poor mentor, she privately thought Mistralpaw had her work cut out for her even with Earlybloom's help.
