The day was extraordinarily bright and warm. Jackalfang's tabby brown fur was warmed by not only the beating sun, but also by the thrill of the hunt which ended in him capturing a mighty plump rabbit. It was his last kill of the day. Having spent most of his early morning and midday out hunting, he was ready to take a nice long break. It was well deserved. Not only was he bringing in this last rabbit, he had caught an array of fresh kill throughout the day. As Newleaf rose from it's slumber, so did many of prey throughout Springclan territory. It was a great time for hunting.
The tabby tom walked into the bustling camp, his jaws clamping securely around his kill as he made his way to the fresh kill pile that was rather large and hefty with fresh kill from the day. As he was about to set down the rabbit, he caught sight of a particular calico she-cat. His eyes widened slightly in excitement. He hadn't realized how busy had become in the recent days, so much so he hadn't really checked on his old friend. His expression fell slightly as he thought back to those days. It took long to befriend the she-cat as a kit. It was long and sometimes painful, but worth it, but everything change once he started his training. He rarely had time to spend with Peonymist, often opting to go practice new moves and talk about training with the other apprentices. Over time, it was more and more easy to get caught up in the crowd which mean't spending less time with Peonymist. Finally, one afternoon she finally called him out on his behavior and he couldn't argue because it was true. He had been so focused on being the best and surrounding himself by others who made him feel stronger that he failed to realize he had neglected his friend who was struggling in her own training which where limited due to her lame leg. It was since that day the two grew apart and the guilt never left the warrior. He knew she must have hated him, because ever since that day, she blatantly ignored him when ever he approached. He often would give up, but today felt different. A wave of courage coursed through him and he pushed forward, taking the feelings with a stride and moved forward towards the calico she-cat, the dead rabbit still secure in his jaw.

"I suppose you want a celebration feast thrown in your honor for that catch?" Peonymist didn't have to look up to know her old friend was approaching, his scent hitting her somewhere around the knees which grew weak the closer he came. She didn't hide the vitriol in her voice, clearly gazing over his shoulder rather than at his face. "Unless you have business with me, I have nothing to say to you, Jackalfang. You know that." Each word, each insult, each barb...they sunk into her just as deeply as she intended them for the tom. He had hurt her. Badly.
It was easy to think it would just be the two of them against the world: her patient, funny, teasing Jackalkit. Her heart had been his from almost the first moment he leaned over to her nest and whispered hi with the most troublesome grin in the world. He was always there at the back of the crowd with her, not commenting on her lame leg or holding it against her. She felt...normal with him. Then he decided that hanging with her was too much work. Why would he want to hang out with a reject like her when he had cool, four-legged friends to run and play with? Her heart slowly broke, piece by piece, as she watched him drift away. She tried to make better jokes, find more entertaining games, better prey. Still, the light in his eyes faded, his time spent more often out of camp than in it, and anger replaced the shards in her chest, piecing her heart back together behind a shield of jagged glass.
"You can leave it here, if you don't want to bother with dividing it between the kits and the elders," she added, pulling herself out of the dreary reverie, eyes frosty. She didn't owe him a second chance, didn't even owe him respect. Not when he'd used her for as long as she was useful to him, and then discarded her like crowfood.
Her snarky response did not take the brown tabby by surprise, on the contrary, he fully expected it. His hazel gaze stayed on the warrior, waiting patiently as she continued on her bombardment, taking her harsh words with a grain of salt. As she wrapped up her defense, he glanced up to the sky, noting the sun's position with smug intrigue. "I wouldn't mind at all if the kits and elders hadn't just been fed." He finally spoke up, staring back down at Peonymist expectantly, his signature crooked smile was more wonky as he finally set the rabbit down at the she-cat's paws. "The sun has passed the quarter peak, which means that the elders and kits should have just been fed some time ago now." The warrior spoke factually, the gears in his mind turning as hazel gaze took in Peonymist's cold gaze with warmth despite the blatant chill that the she-cat created. "That means the only ones left to eat for the day are the warriors and apprentices who are finishing their duties... like you and me." He sat back on his haunches, rabbit at his paws. "I figured you should be close to done with your tasks and knowing you, you've distracted yourself long enough that you haven't eaten a good meal since earlier morning."

"Knowing me?" Her voice was a font of venom. She heaped hurt onto her fragile heart which beat slightly faster when he said 'you and me.' It used to be just them, together. That he thought of her threatened to send warm fuzzies through her chest, but she tamped down on it and pushed the rabbit away with a paw. "You don't know me, Jackalfang. You gave up that privilege when you decided it was easier to leave me behind."
Still, he wasn't wrong. She hadn't broken her fast that morning, too eager to busy herself with chores to remember to eat. Though she wouldn't admit it, maybe he did know her...just a bit. Her pride was too great to take any of the rabbit, even if he hadn't been the one to catch it. "What have you been up to, anyway? Running around, ignoring your duties? Or have you found another she-cat's heart to break?"
The words were out of her mouth before she realized what she had said. She gasped, eyes instantly shutting as heat suffused her face and chest. She knew that trying to explain away her slip-up would just draw more attention to it, so she cut him a dark, forbidding glare that promised pain if he asked.
The brown tabby tom simply listened on, internally battling the storm of guilt that began to grow with the looming accusations. He hated the feeling. Being confrontational was not his forte. He was a simple cat who moved forward in everything he did. Holding grudges was something he never could understand, yet again, no one had ever given him a reason to hold a grudge. But Peonymist had plenty of reasons to hold a grudge against him.
His ears perked at her last remark, causing his hazel eyes to widen slightly, but the venomous look she gave him ushered him to hold back his reaction, his heart racing slightly faster in his chest. "Look Peonymist... I didn't mean to make you feel like that." He finally spoke up after quietly taking the she-cat's verbal blows "You know I'm not that kind of tom... I just-" He tried to explain, finding it difficult to find the words to explain himself. He was never good for formalizing his emotions under pressure like this. "I just... had goals and those goals mean't taking time from us." Jackalfang spoke sincerely, his words tinged with hints of apology. "But I recognize now how bad it must have looked on the outside looking in..." The admission was quieter and dripped in guilt. The warrior's hazel gaze fell to the dirt at his paws for a moment, his brow furrowed deeply before looking back up at Peonymist "Look, I know I don't deserve your friendship right now, but can I at least as for a change to try to build that again?" The request was heartfelt, more than the tom had shown within the conversation. The act felt odd and his natural instinct to joke under pressure took over before he could think too clearly " I am just HOPPING you give me a second chance." He half-joked, nudging the rabbit closer to the she-cat with a brown paw. It was in that moment that the tom realized how ridiculous and mal-timed the pun was. A crooked smile of horror was plastered on his expression as he realized how stupid that sounded.

A gasp of air and then silence from Peonymist at his pun. Her eyes were wide and emotionless, still waters hiding a roiling undercurrent. As she slowly exhaled, she categorized her emotions. Denial. She must have heard him wrong; he would never say something like that. Anger. He knew how much it hurt to have her leg mentioned, since all it had ever been was a burden. Bargaining. Maybe if she apologized to him for snapping at him like that, he wouldn't have said such a hurtful thing? Depression. Maybe she deserved it. After all, he left her once, he must have had a good reason. Acceptance. Or...she could accept his apology, see his terrible joke for what it was - a paw out in peace - and take it.
By the time she finished exhaling, her eyes had softened and she looked up into his eyes, remembering how much she had loved to just sit and look at him when they were kits. He might have been talking or play fighting or watching the star, but for her? For her, it was always him. "Okay." It was a breath, a whisper of air barely loud enough to count as a word, but to Peonymist, it felt like she had shouted it from the top of the gathering place rock. "Okay, we can try again."
The gasp brought the warrior's heart to drop, confusion and clueless-ness making his mind spiral with different ideas of where he went wrong. He maintained his expression, though it had faltered a bit as his mind went into a deep reflection on his words. Did he say something wrong? Was the timing for a joke a bad one? Did his joke not make sense? Was she just not in a joking mood- It was here that the she-cat's reaction finally clicked with his naive mind. What if she took it personally because of her disablity and not the fact that he was trying to make a rabbit-pun.
Horror was evident on Jackalfang's expression as he truly realized the reason for Peonymist's unusual reaction. This was it. If it was truly what he came to realize then there would be no going back on building a friendship with her again. This could easily have been the straw that broke the camels back, and Jackalfang knew very well that he would not recover not even an inch of remorse from the she-cat ever again. But then, unexpectedly, her expression softened and she spoke the words he didn't think he would hear so soon.
Jackalfang blinked slowly, confused and doubtful at first of what he heard. Maybe his mind was playing tricks. Maybe his hopefulness create a mirage of hope? But after a few long moments of silence, he finally accepted that fact that he did hear the right words, but there was a hint of sadness to the she-cat's expressive eyes that the brown tabby could note, though he was unsure of why. A stern mentally slap then came from his head as a reminder for his bad joke.
"Its a rabbit." He blurted out in a mixture of panic and excitement "Did you get it? Because rabbits hop- a-and they- I mean they hop- Like this!" He randomly explained in a mess of words, and before he could control his inward panic, he began to hop around, making similar movements to a rabbit. Three hops in was enough to make the warrior realize how stupid he looked. Jackalfang stopped abruptly, clearing his throat in embarrassment as he looked away in poor attempt to hide his shame. What was wrong with him? A explanation could have been enough, but he actually hopped around like an idiot.

Peonymist's laugh was soft and low, like the deep red petals of a wild rose, and it was seldom heard in SpringClan's camp. When Jackalfang began to jump around the camp like the rabbit he had meant - she had been too sensitive like always, of course - she couldn't withhold the laughter that spilled out, changing her entire appearance. When she smiled, it was as though the sun came out from behind a gray cloud. "They hop like that, huh?" she asked, a wry smile twisting her lips. "I thought they hopped a little more like this." She began to jump around just as foolishly as he had, made more so by her dependence on her front legs to give her the spring needed to jump instead of her hind legs. She began to laugh so hard as she jumped that she eventually gave up and flopped onto the ground, her legs in the air as she gazed skywards.
Jackalfang's hazel eyes widened slightly at the sound of Peonymist's laugh. It felt like a large swig of water, replenishing a painful thirst. It had been so long since he heart her laugh. His head tilted slightly as he took in the calico as she because to brighten up with more laughter and smiles. The sight was contagious and he couldn't help but chuckle along, his smile wide as he watched the she-cat begin to hop around too. His paws danced lightly under him with relief. His laughter grew with Peonymist as he skipped forward until he was standing over Peonymist, looking down at her with pure content. "Its been too long since I heard you laugh like that... I was beginning to think you lost your sense of humor!"

"Nope, just a leg," she replied flippantly, rolling her eyes at the tom. Before he could realize what she was doing, she rolled over and caught his legs, pulling him down onto the soft moss of the camp floor with her. "It has been a while, hasn't it?" she asked, her voice softer and more contemplative. "And I wonder who's fault that was...?" The tease was made lightly, but there was still an echo of pain in it. It would take a while for Jackalfang to truly gain back her trust, but the love she had for the tom so long ago was making it easy to fall back into companionship once again.
The self depreciating joke sent a melodious laugh from the warrior. His wide berth pushed together his vision, blinding him briefly in response to Peonymist's joke. It gave the she-cat enough time to strike, catching the brown tabby off guard and sending him flying onto his back and hitting the earth bellow. A loud gasp erupted from him, more in surprise rather than pain, his hazel eyes wide in shock as he turned his head to take in Peonymist, his face uncomfortably close to hers. He swallowed hard in the moment, his heart racing as he stared into her pretty expression before hiding away his blatant staring behind a wide smile "Hey!" He exclaimed playfully, playfully kicking at her side, rough enough to get a response but gentle enough that it was more of a discomfort than pain.
"Okay yea you got me on that." He huffed with embarrassment, glancing away breezily as he struggled to hide the guilt on his expression. In that moment, the tom's expression grew dull with somber "I am truly sorry for that..."
