Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
OPALKIT "Smokecloud, Smokecloud!" Opalkit burst out of the Nursery's the moment he caught sight of the gray warrior entering the camp, as instructed by his mother. His little orange legs worked fast, too fast, and he stumbled, cartwheeling forward painfully until he reached a few tail lengths away from the warrior. Opalkit groaned in pain for a moment before looking up at the scarred face, blinking in a moment of awe. "My momma says that the kits are coming and to tell you as soon as I saw you enter camp!" He squeaked excitingly "They sent Yarrowsong earlier for you, but they weren't sure if she was going to find you in time!" He rose to his paws, shaking out his newly dirt filled pelt before continuing "I went to go get the medicine cats just like my mama told me too earlier! They are all in the nursery right now!" The urgency in the kit's voice grew with each word.
MOSSBREEZE The queen shifted uncomfortably against the warm moss bed, breathing low and heavily as another wave of contractions. As instructed, she focused on her breathing, but got difficult as the waves of contractions began to build up. Hearing Opalkit's cries brought a wave of relief to the she-cat. Smokecloud was finally here. The emotions from the realization formed as tears in her eyes as she leaned back with a crooked, pain-filled smile.
Smokecloud The gray warrior twitched his whiskers in amusement as the kit came bounding up to him and tripped. Before he could ask the kit if he was okay, Opalkit told him his kits were on their way. His ears shot up and his eyes widened. "The kits are coming! The kits are coming!" He ran in place, panic rising inside. Why was he panicking? He used to be a medicine cat! Yet, here he was, panicking and losing his mind. He had to get in there! He leaped over Opalkit and raced to the nursery, spraying up dust in his wake. He burst through the nursery entrance and saw Mossbreeze laying in her nest, preparing to give birth. His heart began to race and his breathing quickened. All he could do was stand there and watch.
Fawnheart Fawnheart was crouched beside Mossbreeze, offering her a stick to chew on while she gave birth. "Chew on this and make sure you keep your breathing as steady as you can. And try to remain calm." The cream somali cat instructed, as she handed Mossbreeze the stick and placed her paw on the queen's stomach to feel for the kits.
Softpelt purred as she looked up from her spot beside several herbs. She blinked her blue eyes at Smokecloud. "You're just in time," She said, "They should be arriving any moment," She turned to focus on Mossbreeze, fluffy white tail swishing softly along the nursery floor. She would take care of the kits when they came first while Fawnheart continued to coax the mother. They had a good system worked out.
Having been so focused on her breathing and following Fawnheart's instruction, Mossbreeze didn't notice Smokecloud standing at the entrance of the den. It wasn't until her mate spoke up did Mossbreeze realize Smokecloud had arrived. Her tired pale green gaze slowly followed the direction of the comforting voice "Smokecloud..." She meowed quietly before another wave of powerful contractions took over her body, causing her to meow loudly in discomfort. She stretched out in hopes of relieving the pain but it didn't help. Mossbreeze began to chew harder on the stick. She could feel the growing pressure and didn't understand why. The feeling scared her, so much so that her eyes brimmed with tears. "Fawnheart..." She meowed, her voice small and shaky as she glanced at the medicine cat for reassurance.
Fawnheart Fawnheart picked up on the queen's fear. "Your doing great, Mossbreeze. Your doing just fine." The medicine cat assured with a soothing voice. It was important for Mossbreeze to remain calm during this time. If she panicked too much, the kits could get stuck but she wasnt about to tell Mossbreeze that. That would only cause her anxiety to rise. "The first one is on it's way. Just focus on your breathing and give a little push."
Smokecloud Smokecloud began grooming Mossbreeze between the ears in a soothing, rhythmic stroke in hopes to keep her calm. "Its okay, my love. You can do this. I believe in you." He whispered between his stroking.
Mossbreeze took in Fawnheart's expressing, focusing hard on the medicine cat's words as she continued to push on, her breathing shaking heavily. At the gentle support of her mate, she could feel her mind focus slightly, her brow knitted as she felt a wave of confidence push through her. With a discomfort filled meow, Mossbreeze felt pressure then immediate relief. Her body, once tensed and tight, now melted back into the moss bed, her breathing heavy as she heard soft whining. Slowly, the queen raised her head to see the sight of a small black kit. With no instruction she went forward, cleaning the kit with her tongue. It was an odd feeling. To know what exactly to do without truly having known. The realization surprised the queen as she continued to clean off the kit.
Beedust had been able to get out of camp for a walk with her mate, since the weather was so nice for the season and she was tired of being cramped up in the nursery all the time. Upon her arrival, she had heard that Mossbreeze's labor had started, and she now came (nearly crashing) through the front of the den. "Am I too late-oh!" Beedust lapsed into silence at the sight of the first kit, slinking around quietly to sit beside Mossbreeze's head. The queen had been a comfort to her in her first few days, and the two had grown close in their time together. Now it was time to be a comfort to her.
"It's so small," Beedust said in a whisper, looking at the small black form of the kit.
Fawnheart The cream medicine cat ignored Beedust's presence unintentionally. Usually Fawnheart was much more greetable but her focus was strictly on Mossbreeze. "Congratulations, Mossbreeze. It's a handsome baby boy" Fawnheart purred gently as Mossbreeze cleaned the kit. After the queen had cleaned and dried most of the kit, Fawnheart lifted the little black tom and gently dropped him at Softpelt's paws for a further evaluation. "Dont worry. Softpelt is just going to check him over to make sure he is breathing correctly and is healthy. Then we can start him on the nursing." She wanted Mossbreeze to know what they were doing so that she didn't panic being away from her kit. Fawnheart placed a paw on the queen's belly once again. "It looks like theres a few more."
Smokecloud Smokecloud, who had been soothing his mate beside Softpelt, looked over as the kit was placed in the medicine cat apprentice's paws. He stopped grooming Mossbreeze for a moment to greet the first kit. He was so tiny and helpless, Smokecloud noticed. He lowered his head close to the kit to get a better look. "Hello, little one. Welcome to the world." His voice was gentle and soothing, a big smile on his face.
Mossbreeze looked up at her friend who entered into the den, blinking at her before refocusing on her kit, pulling away for a moment, enough for the medicine cat to take the small kit away. The queen's heart raced instinctively, her body flinching as she watched the kit get passed off to Softpelt. Her eyes widened in that moment, a small burst of panic racing through her body, but the medicine cat's words eased her back to a state of calm, but the queen's eyes still remained on the kit who squirmed around helplessly. Seeing Smokecloud lean forward to greet the kit made the queen melt further with calm and she leaned back again, taking the moment to regain herself right before a new wave of contraction hit her. ____________
This process took longer than the queen anticipated. Three more kits had been born, two she-cats and one more tom. At this point, Mossbreeze felt exhaustion take her as she leaned back completely into the moss bed. She was tired, so tired. And with four kits out, she knew she was close to the end. There was still one more, potentially two more based on Fawnheart's calculation, but Mossbreeze felt herself struggling. The last kit, a tom, took the greatest toll from her as she struggled to push. "I don't know if I can anymore." Mossbreeze panted, staring at Fawnheart painfully as she felt another wave of contractions.
Fawnheart "Come on, Mossbreeze. You can do it. Your so close" she encouraged, hoping the queen could tough it out for the last tom. She knew Mossbreeze was getting weak and tired but she only prayed that the queen would hang on for just a little bit longer to push the last kit out.
Smokecloud The gray tom looked at Mossbreeze with concern. He began to panic with the fear that she was too weak to deliver the last kit on her own. "You can do it, my love" he whispered to her, hoping to encourage her. "Come on, Mossbreeze. Your the strongest she-cat I know. You can do this. I know you can."
Mossbreeze could feel the tears brim her pale green orbs as yet another powerful way of contractions coursed through her tired body. Fear gripped her as she thought of the worse. What if she wasn't strong enough to do this? The fear of letting down her kit and her family made her tense and her breathing hike up. Everything around her grew faint as her own doubts and fear began to speak over those around her who attempted to encourage her.
Fawnheart "Softpelt, go fetch me Narcissus flower petals and Skullcap seeds immediately" Fawnheart ordered her partner.
Smokecloud "What? Why? What's happening?" Smokecloud asked in a panic.
Fawnheart The cream somali cat rested her tail on Smokecloud. "Relax. She is fine. Dont you know, Smokecloud? The Narcissus flower will help ease her mind while delivering this last kit and the Skullcap seeds will give her the extra strength she needs to continue this birth."
Smokecloud The gray warrior relaxed, recalling the herbs. "Oh, right. It's been some time since I practiced with the herbs..." He felt embarrassed that he didn't recognize the herbs that Fawnheart had named. He should have known. Hes used them before.
Mossbreeze blinked slowly, her head rolling back slightly to face her mate, concern growing in her eyes as she heard his panicked tone "Smokecloud." She spoke, her words coming out groggily and slow, exhaustion clear in her tone as she fought to push out the words. As fearful as she was, her body was relaxed and numb, contrary to the feelings and actions her mind fought to push forward. There was something wrong and she had already felt it. The confirmation from her mate's reaction only furthered her feeling on the matter.
Smokecloud "Its okay. Fawnheart is going to help you get the extra strength you need to finish this" he mewed sothingly, beginning to groom her once more.
