Blackberrypaw bristled as Skypaw was sucked in by the tempestuous water, only to relax as the young tom pulled himself out. He leaned down and sniffed the water, flinching back as it splashed into his nose and burned. “No, it’s not poison,” he mewed logically. “Look,” he pointed into the water with his paw, and just a moment later, an odd creature scrambled out of the wave, moving sideways on four legs. It had long, curved claws that pinched together. Blackberrypaw jumped back as the creature scuttled toward him, but tightly mewed, “It looks like things live in it, so it must not be poison.”
He turned his head to let his eyes follow the crab when he looked up, and saw something much more terrifying than the crashing water and the weird creatures that came from within it. It was similar to a two-leg monster, holding the same, acidic smell, but it was much bigger, with odd, long belts where the monsters normally had wheels. It’s muzzle was long, and hanging from the front of it, was an enormous ball. His green-blue eyes widened and he stepped back, his hind paws landing in the cold water, but he barely noticed. “Do you think it can see us?” He whispered, his voice hoarse.
Peachpaw tried to give Poppypaw a glare, but it turned into a softer look. She supposed the other apprentice was right. It was best to be cautious. When did Poppypaw get so mature? Her thoughts were interrupted as Skypaw was grabbed by the water. She yelped in shock, immediately rushing forward. “Water bear!” Her fur lay flat once more as Skypaw emerged safe and sound. “Why is this water so weird!” She made her way over to Blackberrypaw, mouth moving but no words coming out. She shook her head rapidly, but the movements continued.
“Ew! What is that?” Her initial panic had worn off, replaced now by the few leftover bits of adrenaline and burning curious out. She stuck her nose close to the creature for a second, flinching back at a pinch of its weird paws. Her eyes followed her brothers, landing on the same monster. “See . . . See us—See!—I hope not!”
Blackberrypaw was right. The water wasnt poison. Things were living in it! Weird and creeping things. He watched the crab scurry away before turning his green eyes toward the monster Blackberrypaw had noticed. "It looks like its asleep" Speckledpaw commented. "But I bet you that's what knocked down the wall. Look at that big round thing at the end of it. That could knock down the wall just by touching it."

Skypaw looked at his denmates gratefully. "I'm alright," he meowed to Speckledpaw and Poppypaw. He was glad he didn't need rescued and relieved the water wasn't poison because he had swallowed some when the wave grabbed him. He tried washing the water from his fur but stopped after getting a tongue full of sand and salt water. Then he saw the monster everyone was talking about. His eyes grew huge like two moons that hovered over his nose. "I bet you're right," he told Speckledpaw. "It's probably the one who smashed it down. We better not wake it up or it might do the same to us. We should go back."
"At least Skypaw has some sense." Poppypaw replied, shaking the sand from her pelt. She sidestepped the crab from earlier and joined the group that was closer to the edge of the water. She felt no desire to taste it or ever touch it; from scent alone she knew it was not meant to be consumed, "We should report this directly to Ratstar. If you are too afraid to fess up to him then I can do it." And claim the credit. Maybe even name it the Poppy Sea!
"What? So you can take all the credit, Poppypaw? Forget it! We will all tell him. Worst case, we will be held back from our warrior ceremony. Best case, we go back to camp as heroes and we receive our warrior names!" Speckledpaw puffed out his calico chest. He let his imagination wonder. He could see it now. Walking into camp with the whole clan cheering their names. Perhaps they would even be rewarded with their warrior names. He began to run through the possible warrior names that Ratscar would give him. Speckledsabor. Speckledclaw. Speckledhero! Yes! Speckledhero, the greatest adventurer who ever lived! He was snapped from his day dream and shook his head to clear it. "We should get back, though. Dawn will be here soon and if we aren't back before then, we could kiss being heroes goodbye! Ratstar would probably be less angry if we told him in the morning than he would be if he found out we were missing. The whole clan would be sent out on a search party and that could all end up badly."

Skypaw had walked a few steps away from the others so he could shake his fur. Some of the sand and water flew off but not all. He felt cold, wet and miserable. As he came back he heard Poppypaw and Speckledpaw talking about going home. Good! Others were thinking the same as he did. He wished he was snug and dry in his nest right at this moment. "I'm too young yet to receive my warrior name but being a hero sounds great," he meowed. He looked around expectantly at the others hoping they'd agree it's time to leave.
“I mean... I suppose this isn’t something we can just keep from Ratstar,” Blackberrypaw murmured, thinking deeply, trying to shake off the feeling of fear that came from seeing the sleeping monster. “We should all tell him together. I know I won’t be getting my warrior ceremony yet,” he was still too young, and since he had instigated the entire adventure, he was bound to be in the most trouble if any of the others said anything. “Let’s go,” he sighed, worrying bubbling deep in his stomach as he began to lead the others up the beach.
Just behind the group of apprentices, a little way down the beach, a tiny, dark shadow was following after them. Coalkit mewed loudly, the dark water pulling at his tiny paws. “Wait for me!” The kit called. He had trailed the group all the way from camp, and they had never even noticed him. He was proud of himself for how quiet he had tracked them. “Hey guys!” He called again, but his voice was drowned out as an extra large wave rampaged for the shore. As if a giant paw, the wave swept Coalkit away with a strangled scream. He disappeared beneath the water.
“Did you guys hear that?” Blackberrypaw stopped, turning his head to look behind them. The shore was empty. Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky, revealing dark clouds that covered the moon and stars. In just the momentary spark, Blackberrypaw’s eye caught the wild gaze of Coalkit before the water swept him under once more.
“COALKIT!” Blackberrypaw wailed, dashing away from the other apprentices and toward the water, his heart feeling as though it was about to burst from his chest.
Fear and panic gripped Speckledpaw as he shot after Blackberrypaw, racing after the other apprentice faster than he had ever ran before despite slipping on the sand. "Coalkit! Hold on! We're coming!"

"NO!" Skypaw yowled as he hared off after the first two apprentices. "Coalkit! No!" He knew exactly what the kit must be experiencing just having gone through it himself. He stopped at the place in the sand where the water from the waves was trickling back into the ocean and looked out over the water. "The waves are now twice as high as they were when I was sucked in!" He called in a loud voice to be heard over the sound of the sea. "I see him! Over here! HURRY!!" He could just make out a dark shape bobbing up and down in the waves.
Blackberrypaw didn’t hesitate. Coalkit had always reminded him of himself, no wonder the young tom had snuck out after the apprentices. Just two sunrises ago, Blackberrypaw had been tormenting him and the queens with a ball of moss. The gray tom threw himself into the waves, choking as the salty water burned his nose and flooded into his throat. He paddled strongly into the water, his blue-green gaze searching wildly through the water, but it was so dark he couldn’t see anything.
Lightning flashed again, and a new thunder rolled across the sky, shaking the sand beneath Blackberrypaw’s paws. He slid further into the sea, the lightning just bright enough to show him Coalkit’s dark frame beneath the waves. Blackberrypaw dove into the water, grabbing the kit by his scruff. His fur, weighed down by the water, tried to drag both toms down, but Blackberrypaw pushed up toward the sky, breaking through the ways. His lungs were heaving, breathing in the salt water on Coalkit’s pelt.
“Help!” He yowled through Coalkit’s fur. His legs were going numb with the cold of the water. He tried to paddle toward the shore, his legs beginning to slide uselessly in the sand.

Throwing caution to the wind, Skypaw dove in after the two cats. The water was cold and the salt stung his already irritated eyes. I've got to reach them! he thought as he fought through the pull of the water. Suddenly the wave pulled back and he saw them right in front of him. He bit down on Blackberrypaw's scruff and pulled him toward the shore. "Push with your legs!" he called through a mouthful of wet fur.

Skypaw collapsed just out of the hungry waves' reach on the wet sand. His sides were heaving from the exertion he made to help bring Blackberrypaw and Coalkit to safety. Twice in the same night! He thought dismally. Once was bad enough! Spitting out sand and fur, he sat up and looked around. "Thanks," he meowed to Speckledpaw, glad for his help. He didn't know if he could have done it by himself. Upon seeing Blackberrypaw and Coalkit safe on the shore, he laid back down thinking both were now safe.

Blackberrypaw could hardly hear Skypaw over the roar of the waves, but he gave one more measly push. He felt Skypaw and Speckledpaw drag him and Coalkit to safety. The dark apprentice flopped to the ground, his sides heaving as he threw up. Ocean water burned his throat, feeling as though the salt had left open cuts in the tender skin. “Lick him,” he croaked to the other apprentices, before throwing up more water. Black dots danced across his eyes, threatening to pull him into unconsciousness. He feebly tried to lick his own chest and bring warmth back into his fur.
Coalkit was lying perfectly still, his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling every few seconds. It was shallow and gurgled.
Speckledpaw collapsed, panting from the effort. "Dont mention it" he gasped when Skypaw thanked him. Then, he became aware of the rough shape Coalkit was in after Blackberrypaw spoke. He leaped to his paws and rushed over to the tiny black kit and began licking him fiercely. Not only did he have to get him warm, he had to get the water out of his lungs. He thought that if he licked the kit rough enough, the strokes would help push the water out.
Peachpaw stuck her tongue out at Poppypaw, knowing no way was this she-cat getting all the credit. “Nuh-uh! No way are we letting you take all the credit!” She paused and let a smirk crawl onto her face. “I’d be the best hero, though.” The apprentice batted at Skypaw playfully. ”Yeah, you’re just a little lit.” She giggled. Peachpaw sighed at her brother.
“Why you gotta ruin the fun? Can’t we stay for a bit longer?” She went to move, but was interrupted by the tiny, almost inaudible, voice. She flicked her ears, trying to hear once more. She ignored the strange itch in her throat. “Coalkit? What’s he doin’ out here?” Panic burst through her chest as she watched the waves swallow the kit up. “Coalkit! Coalkit!” She raced to the edge of the water, about to dive in when she saw the blur of her brother.
“Wait! Blackberrypaw!” She cowered as another wave splashed the shore, jumping back. How could she save them? What if they didn’t make it? Relief flushed her whole being as they made it safely to shore. She immediately rushed to them.
“Sorry—sorry—sorry!” As Speckledpaw licked Coalkit, she ran her tongue furiously over her brother. “You could have died! Starclan, this was such a stupid idea! I’m sorry, I should have helped you—“ She rambled, panic still coursing through her veins.
Blackberrypaw relaxed as his sister’s tongue began to rasp across his pelt. He let his head flop down. “Better me drown than,” he suddenly wretched, the last of the water voiding his lungs and stomach. “You,” he finished, his heart swelling with love for his sister. Warmth began to trickle back into his legs, making them tremble with feeling — it was almost painful. He tried to pull himself closer to Coalkit, his sea-colored gaze burning into the little tom’s pelt. Willing him to live.
Despite Speckledpaw’s attempts, Coalkit’s breathing was not growing any stronger. At last, he heaved, but only a trickle of water made it past his lips and into the sand. The young tom took a shuddering breath and then his body relaxed; his legs slowly stretched, shifting the sand. Then he lay still. Blackberrypaw watched in dismay for any rise in his chest.
“COALKIT!” He wailed, nudging the tom with his wet paw. “COALKIT! Wake up!” Blackberrypaw cried, surely his anguish would reach camp. “StarClan, don’t take him! Take me,” he whimpered.
Speckledpaw stopped licking the kit when he went limp. The ache in the calico tom's chest was almost too much to bear. He backed away, feeling sick to his stomach as tears began to fall. "I-Im so sorry I couldnt save you, Coalkit" he whispered, his voice shaking and rough with grief. He sat there, trembling in both coldness and anguish as the lump in his throat grew. "I'm sorry, Blackberrypaw...I tried..." he laid in the sand and buried his nose in his paws.
Peachpaw snuggled closer to her brother, hoping her own body warmth would help him. She wrapped her tail around him. Her chest was warm with the love for her brother. The cream she-cat stared at the kit, hoping and praying that he survived. It all would have been for nothing, and it all would have been their fault. She could never love with the guilt of knowing that their little adventure cost a young life.
“Coalkit?” She breathed, scooting over and pressing her nose to him. He was cold. Very, very cold. She stared back at Blackberrypaw, almost bursting into tears at his reaction. She rushed back over to her brother, wrapping herself around him once more. She could barely think—barely breathe. Her thoughts were a swarm of nothing but Coalkit is dead. Coalkit is dead and it’s your fault. Coalkit is dead—dead—dead! She succumbed to her tears. She coughed repeatedly out of her control and she cried more—knowing everything was in chaos. Coalkit was not suppose to die—not like this!
