Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The early morning birds' songs stirred the black and white long-haired she-cat out of sleep, her green eyes opened slowly, first revealing nothing but darkness before finally a soft light. Mossbreeze slowly raised her head, looking around the moss bed only to see the other kits still deep in sleep. It was the usual morning for the queen; The kits were often the first to wake up but not a soul had stirred. Having been an early bird herself, she used to be one of the first, if not the first, cat to wake up, but the changes her body was going through as she carried her unborn kits changed her sleep patterns dramatically. Today though was different.
The queen rose from her warm spot looking around before quietly padding out of the Nursery. As if on cue, her stomach grumbled and she sighed. She had rose just shy of moon-high last night to eat and now her body acted as if she hadn’t eaten in days. Despite not being particularly huge, the she-cat had naturally developed a small waddle that was prominent as she moved forward towards the fresh kill pile.
At the same time, Smokecloud had approached with a couple scrawny squirrels dangling from his jaws, the scars on his face much more noticeable during the day. A disappointed look was painted on his face as he deposited his catch onto the fresh-kill pile. After staring a moment at his pitiful catch, he looked up to see Mossbreeze looking to grab a bite. "The hunting patrol didn't bring back very much so I thought I would go out and try but it seems with all the recent flooding at the bottom of the mountain, there hasn't been much luck with prey. And with leaf-bare being among us on top of that. I'm afraid you won't find much meat but the two squirrels I brought back are still warm" The gray tom pawed a squirrel toward the queen.
As she waddled closer to the fresh-kill pile, Mossbreeze noted the familiar sight of Smokecloud ahead. He dropped two squirrels onto the rather small and unimpressive pile of fresh-kill. Mossbreeze offered the warrior a bright, but tired smile. As distracting as the scares on the tome's face were, Mossbreeze had been so used to the sight, it rarely fazed her, even as the bright sunny morning accentuated the scars further. "For the kind of Leaf-Bare we've had this year, any warm kill is starclan-sent." The queen spoke with sincerity, her eyes brightening with excitement a the sight of the squirrel. "Thank you Smokecloud." She meowed sweetly, taking a look at the other squirrel "I'm sure it must have taken a lot for you to have hunted these down." Her green gaze flickered from squirrel to squirrel before rising to meet the warrior's gaze "I think you definitely deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor; I would love the company if you would join me?" Mossbreeze offered, her tone rising slightly in excitement. As much as she loved helping with the kits, her days were often spent only with kits. Some older company was very much over due.
"I would be delighted to accompany you" Smokecloud purred, taking a stiff mouse from the pile and leaving the other warm squirrel for someone else to have. He gesture for her to choose a place to sit and eat. When Smokecloud had first come to Springclan and was the clan's temporary medicine cat until Fawnheart could return, he wasnt quite as warm as he was now. Many thought of him as rough around the edges but as he spent more time among the Springclan cats, the stone shield around his heart seemed to crumble. Although he could still be quite a grouch at times, he was much more patient and kind than before.
The cheerful acceptance brought a bright smile on the she-cat's already pleasant expression. She grabbed her squirrel tightly in her mouth, waddling over to a spot next to a smooth stone, plopping down slowly against the rock, finding comfort in the support the stone gave her back which conveniently began to ache. She couldn't help but exhale softly. Motherhood.
As the queen laid down, she felt the uncomfortable movement in her low abdomen, causing her to visibly jump. "Kits." She admitted, looked apologetically at Smokecloud before settling a few moments, trying to find a position most comfortable. Once she finally did, she smiled to herself before looking back up at the warrior with a smile.
Smokecloud noticed how uncomfortable Mossbreeze looked as she settled down to eat. "You queens are so tough" he complimented as he settled down beside her with his mouse. "I couldnt imagine being a she-cat and becoming a queen." In his time as medicine cat, he had helped deliver many kits and each time the queen goes through so many changes and pain just to give the clan life. Even though he was a grouch, he had to admit that he always had a soft spot for queens and the struggles they faced. He was always kinder to them when they came to him for anything.
The compliment had Mossbreeze chuckling softly to herself, her coat feeling a tad bit hot at the recognition. "It is not easy, but it is a responsibility I am proud to carry." She spoke up with forceful confidence, her words almost defensive as her pale green gaze steeled onto the warrior next to her. She was sure he knew about her situation, everyone in camp had. She was young warrior when she met a loner. She foolishly fell in love and soon after realized she was expecting kits. When she admitted it to the loner, he left and never returned. It didn't take long for the rumors to spread throughout camp as few clanmates attempted to inquiry on the father. When Mossbreeze could not say who, many caught the idea that it could have been someone outside of the clan. Judgement ensued and since then, the she-cat had grown much stronger in her own defense. Yes, she recognized she made a mistake, but her unborn kits were not at fault, nor did they deserve any judgment. The queen worked hard to take responsibility for her actions for the sake of her kits. She made sure to make it clear to those who might have questioned her quietly.
(Omg! If Mossbreeze hadnt said anything to anyone, yet, maybe eventually Smokecloud and Mossbreeze start a thing and they decide to have Smokecloud say hes the father for the sake of the kits to be accepted? XD)
Smokecloud had caught the warning gaze in her eyes and knew that he had already said too much. The queen was often bothered by the rest of the clan about who the father was but, frankly, he could care less. She's bringing healthy kits to the clan. It shouldnt matter who the father was. Honestly, he was slightly jealous. He had always wanted to eventually start a family with a she-cat but it was hard for anyone to he attracted to a tom without a very pretty face. Despite the fact that the father of the kits didnt want to be in their lives, he envied the tom. Whoever the father was, was probably a pretty stupid cat to have turned down an opportunity like this. A pretty she-cat and a family. Why wouldnt anyone want that? He took an awkward bite of his mouse before saying anything else. "Have you chosen any names for them, yet?"
(OOP! STOP! That would be so cute! She hasn't confided in anyone about the father of the kits (Who is my Loner character Baron) but of course people would assume since she isn't with anyone. But omg this idea would be so cute I don't know how my heart would handle it! I am down if you are! <3)
Mossbreeze felt her muscles relax as the tom took a different approach, rather than insinuate or give her a particular like anyone else would have. Her gaze never left the scarred tom, but it definitely softened up as Smokecloud redirected the subject of the topic to names. "I couldn't say exactly." She spoke gently, a tone much different than her previous as she felt her defenses drop. "I think I would know once I see them." At the moment she said that, she felt movements in her stomach. The feeling caused the she-cat to brighten up, her smile large and wide. "They are quite active though," she added with a giggle "So maybe something energetic would suit them, like Squirrelkit or Kickingkit." She joked
(Definitely!! XD I think it would be so cute! I thought of Bluestar and Thrushpelt <3 Bluestar should have chosen Thrushpelt because he offered to be the father of the kits so that the clan didn't suspect anything! And he was so in love with her but she wasnt in love with him! So I was like, 'well, Mossbreeze doesn't really have a mate so....' lol! <3 )
His whiskers twitched in amusement and a small chuckle escaped his jaws. "Activity is a good sign. It means they will be healthy and strong." He assured her, glancing at her swollen belly. "Those are wonderful names and very fitting, by the way." he purred. "Personally, I've always loved the name Riverkit. It sounds nice to me. Perhaps if I ever find my true love, I'll request that name." He took another bite of his mouse, tasting the stale flavors of the forest. His mind drifted slightly to the thought of having his own family. Being the father he always wanted to be. But he reminded himself of his scarred face. He had never had a she-cat like him. He assumed it was because of his scars. They always seemed to stare or avoid eye contact. While Springclan gave him a home, he still inwardly viewed himself as a freak due to the strange and sometimes frightened glances. Kits especially would run away from him. Some of the warriors were getting used to seeing his face but no matter where he goes, he will always have someone staring. He had just accepted the fact that he may never find true love because of his scars.
"That's what Fawnheart told me!" Mossbreeze meowed proudly, her expression brightening at the tom's comment. The black and white she-cat blink inquisitively at the tom's sweet comment on his on vision of a family. For some odd reason, the notion seemed surprising. Mossbreeze was born and raised in Springclan her whole life and always saw Smokecloud around camp since the day he joined Springclan, but never with a she-cat in tow. She would have never guessed that he wanted a family of his own had he not told her. She smiled widely at the image. It was endearing to see a soft side to the tom. The realization made her heart race suddenly, but she couldn't understand why.
"I think Riverkit is a beautiful name." Mossbreeze meowed quietly, her expression softening as she took in the tom, truly for the first time in their conversation. She could see his mind was wandering, but to where she wasn't too sure. Once she realized she had been staring for too long, she shook her head quickly, her green orbs widening in a bout of embarrassment. "Remind me to ask you for advice on kit names." She quickly spoke, her pelt suddenly feeling hot "You have a natural gift for naming."
Smokecloud warmed at her compliment about him being good at names, oblivious to her staring. "Well, I'm always here if you need help naming" he chuckled, feeling bashful. He finished his meal and swiped his tongue around his lips. He rose to a sitting position and began grooming. In his grooming, he peeked a sideways glance at her and instantly felt a flutter in his chest. She was so pretty. The way the sun light reflected off her fur, the way her green eyes sparkled, and how perfect she looked. He realized he, too, was staring and blinked away.
Mossbreeze smiled to herself as the tom's offer "I will definitely take you up on that." She purred, watching as the tom sat up to groom himself. She watched on for just a moment before her thoughts took to in a different direction. "You want kits of your own?" She asked blunting, finding an unexpected burst of courage. It was too late to take back her forward words, and the second she realized it, she felt herself flush again under her silky pelt.
He was surprised by her sudden question but a warm smile pulled at his cheeks. "I wouldn't mind kits of my own one day. They are the clan's future. Each one is unique and has a destiny. It's a bit exciting knowing that any kit could end up doing something great for the clan." He glanced down at her belly once more. "I bet they will grow to do great things one day" he commented, referring to Mossbreeze's kits. "Who knows? Maybe I will get to mentor one" he joked, implying that he would be a great mentor.
Seeing his at ease reaction, Mossbreeze felt immediate relief. She hadn't crossed a line, it seemed like she was still in his good graces. The queen listened on, now visibly more relaxed, her bright eyes widening slight as she listened on to Smokecloud's words. It was a unique stance she had yet to hear before, but heart warming though the surprise never settled. Smokecloud was so much more that met the eye. There was a deeper side to him than the she-cat anticipated and the realization only made her heart race harder.
His hopes made Mossbreeze warm up, though it was more of content now that embarrassment. "Yes, they will do wonderful things, I know it- and I am sure one of them would be so lucky enough to have a strong and brave warrior like you to teach them how to achieve it." She meowed softly, looking down briefly at the dirt below her, so focused on the idea of her kits, she didn't realize how genuine and forward her compliments were. Talking so surely about her kits made her all more excited, but a sudden cloud interrupted her feelings, causing her brows to knit tightly. "They'll have to work twice as hard at it though." The words were calm but there was a hint of sourness at the end. Mossbreeze felt herself shift uncomfortably as she thought of her kit's half-clan status. Though she never admitted nor denied it, everyone suspected it due to a lack of a tom taking responsibility in the clan. There was a passionate protectiveness that begun to build in the she-cat's mind as she thought more on it.
He looked at her with confusion in his eyes. "Why would they have to work harder?" he asked, hoping he wasn't pressing too hard on his questions. He didn't want to upset her. He knew how some she-cats would be when they were expecting. They all seemed to be on edge and overly protective which was understandable. She-cats were amazing creatures to be able to carry so many lives inside them. They have several little warriors growing inside them. It was quite fascinating that they could put up with as much as they do.
Having been so lost in her own private concerns and comfort in the company, she hadn't realized that she had spoke the words in her head out-loud until Smokecloud asked. She flinched at the realization but remained silent, watching the warrior with a new look of suspicion. Anger for herself began to boil within her. How could she be so stupid and careless with her words. Her mind wandered to any and all lies and excuses she could think of to justify her words, but instead remained in a state of silent confusion, taking in the tom's amber eyes.
"I'm sorry, I'll have to excuse myself." She spoke politely but her words were distant and weary as she slowly rose to her four paws, sighing softly under her breath as she felt the small movements in her belly. "I'm not feeling so well right now, I think I should go see Fawnheart and Softpelt." She stated with false concern, her green eyes fluttering away from Smokecloud in poor attempt to hide the conflict of emotions in her eyes. Something in her chest longed to stay, finding comfort in the tom's presence, but the feelings were no match to her protective nature. "Thank you Smokecloud for the company, I really appreciated and enjoyed it." The words were softer and genuine, though a guarded look remained.
(I can start up a new thread for the two and maybe Mossbreeze can apologize and open up more to Smokecloud there? :3)
Smokecloud wondered if it was something he said and instantly regretted it. "Oh-yes. Of course. Definitely go see Fawnheart and Softpelt. They should be able to help you..." He trailed off as she was already walking away. His heart sank and he looked down at his paws. He shouldn't have gotten his hopes up. No she-cat wanted a cat with nearly half his face missing. What would make her any different? He rose to his paws and padded out of camp to get some air.
(Yeah! We can do that! But Smokecloud already confessed his feelings at the Jubilee so maybe the new thread could be before the Jubilee?)
