Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. (Cleaverlavellan So I had this idea. Amberpaw is the younger brother of Seablossom, right? Well, what if he and his mentor are out picking herbs when a random tom wonders on the land. Said tom just so happens to be Crownglass, the lost mate of Seablossom. Now, Seablossom is back at camp, pregnant with her mate's kits haven't decided yet if I want them to be born just before he arrives, like a few days ago or the day before, or just after he shows up. Figured it'd be a great oppurtinuty for Amberpaw and Hystericplague to hang out. Maybe the MC hangs around while Seablossom and Crownglass are becoming reunited and is just tehre being creepy. lol
He'd been alone after he left the others near SunClan and wished them the best. Despite being tempted to stay, he'd left to return to his home, to find his mate and her family, but with every passing day he'd become more discouraged. She had nine lives, but what if she'd been stuck under a branch and had drowned multiple times? If she had been too broken by the flood to heal her body? Crownglass had made it back to the remains of their territory but there was not enough left to live in, and the rogues he had spoken too hadn't seen her around either. He'd heard his clan was gone, but not a word about their leader. She had to be somewhere. He couldn't let that go.
Crownglass had not lived in two clans and travelled across the entirety of the clan territories to lose her now.
A relentless wheeze rattled in his chest as he trudged along the FallClan border, and at some point perhaps drifted across. Maybe he could find a warm nest to sleep in for once, and some free herbs, if he was lucky.
It was one of the few times that Hystericplague had agreed to take his apprentice out with him to collect herbs, as usually it was his escape. But Amberpaw needed to learn where to find them, and perhaps the experience would help so that he wouldn't run away anytime they made eye contact. The relationship between the medicine cat and his apprentice was a strange one, with neither of them really making any moves to smooth it over, but Hystericplague could only take so much from Loststar, and perhaps it would be better if they could comfortably be in the same den. Plus, the fact that Hystericplague was barely any older than an apprentice himself, the whole situation was odd.
Now that the influx of half-drowned cats was finally over, they were free to collect the other types of herbs that they were running low on, especially with Leaf-bare right around the corner. He motioned to a fern bush, stopping their progress. "Could you collect some of that?" he asked, though it was mumbled through the other herbs in his mouth.
Amberpaw nodded, keeping one eye on his mentor as he moved to do as told. "What are these?" Setting down his own collection of herbs, the tom began to collect the new ones, eyeing them curiously as he did so. They hadn't covered all of teh herbs yet. Partially, mostly, because Amberpaw had avoided the den as much as possible due to his fear of his own mentor. Hopefully, the older tom would become less...creepy soon so he can actually learn something. Or not and Amberpaw could just be lay and do nothing.
The tom continued on his painstaking journey through the territory until he scented cats nearby. He hesitated, but he was in no shape to fight, so it was best he avoided them. Crownglass turned and started to circle far around them when he heard a young, familiar voice. It was a little different, the apprentice was older but unmistakable. It sounded like Amberpaw. That wasn't possible, was it? The dark-furred tom turned and crept after them.
Amberpaw continued to collect the herbs he was told too, still keeping his mentor in the corner of his eye. The young tom, even now, wasn't too trusting of the other medicine cat. He'd heard stories, ones of tales he wanted no part of. So far he hasn't seen anything that...disturbing, but he was sure it was only a matter of time and Amberpaw was determined to not be one of his experiments. Finished collecting the herb, he started to move closer, even though he didn't want to by any means, to his mentor to hopefully be done with this task. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted movement. Dark grey fur stood on end, he hadn't ever been trained in fighting, not even during the two moons he'd been a warrior apprentice in EarthClan. "Hy-Hystericpla-plague..."
At Amberpaw's initial question, Hystericplague put his bundle of herbs down and gave his apprentice a questioning look. Was he serious? He didn't know what a fern was? Oh boy, where would he even have to begin training? At cobwebs? The medicine cat rolled his eyes, and opened his mouth to give a snark reply when he noticed the look of fear that suddenly took over Amberpaw. Hystericplague hadn't noticed anything, being too busy in his own mind, and stepped in front of the apprentice and his shaky voice. If he had any fur, perhaps it would be standing on end, but as it is, the only thing to give away any emotions he may be feeling was the twitching of his twisted whiskers. Amberpaw may be a scaredy cat, but this time it wasn't because of Hystericplague that he trembled. "What is it?" he asked, though his voice wasn't directed in any particular direction, so it was unknown if the question was meant for Amberpaw or any intruders.
"I...." Fear took hold, it was the only explanation for why the tom moved closer to the older cat. Pressed against Hystericplague's side, Amberpaw gazed out towards the moving figure. He'd hoped it was just his imagination, that his mentor would scold him for seeing things and they'd move on with their day. But for the tom to see it too, just increased Amberpaw's fears. I don't wanna die! His thoughts trailed to his sister, resting back at camp, belly full of kits. They'd be here any day, and here he was about to be dead before he could meet them. StarClan above knew he was no help in a fight, and if it came to that, he wasn't sure what Hystericplague would do either.
He paused at the trembling voice and his stomach lurched with guilt. He recognized the voice for certain now, but he hated he'd been the cause of the fear in his voice. Crownglass approached them slowly as he pushed through the foliage, forcing his fur to remain flat against his sides and his head cautiously lowered. "Amberpaw?" he murmured softly, "is that you? It's me-- it's Crownglass." How strange it was to hear his own name, to hear his voice. Days had passed since he saw another cat, since he'd spoken, and his voice was cracked and rough.
The cat himself didn't look much better. His dark fur was scraggly and loose, his eyes shadowed and haunted, and his breath still wheezed slightly on the inhale from whatever sickness he was grappling with.
The name was foreign to Hystericplague, and rather than looking for any recognition in Amberpaw's eyes, the medicine cat pushed himself between the two cats. His apprentice was probably too busy cowering to be of any use, anyway. The tom in front of him looked even worse than Hystericplague did, and most cats would agree that was saying a lot. Where he was naturally lanky and proportionate, his hairless body seeming to resemble more of a large rat than a normal cat, Crownglass' matted body just seemed to be scraggly from hunger and weakness. "What do you want?" he asked. At first, his voice was strong and nearly threatening, but the illusion was broken when he immediately broke off into a series of coughs. What wonderful timing.
Amberpaw realized his mistake and nearly knocked his mentor over in his attempt to get between him and Crownglass. "Wait! I know him. He's safe!" Probably one of the safest cats he knew. Basically helped Seablossom with raising him and his siblings before EarhClan had become no more. Glancing at the tom, he remembered another thing. Seablossom. Seablossom and her kits, his kits! He had to come with them, back to FallClan. StarClan above was he gonna be surprised! Amberpaw was, had been when he learned about the little ones and his sister's pregnancy. Apparently, she'd only realized after things had settled after the destruction of EarthClan and the rest fo the survival clans. She'd basically been stuck in the nursery since they got here, just like he'd been with the medicine cat den.
His hackles raised slightly at the medicine cat, despite his willing his fur flat he reacted instinctively to the hostility in the other tom's tone. As Amberpaw recognized him a look of relief filled his warm golden eyes. It was Amberpaw. He had done the impossible, he'd found EarthClan after these moons alone. "You're here," he murmured. "Is--- where is everyone else? Is Seastar-- is she alive?" He swallowed thickly. She had multiple lives, she couldn't be dead, surely. But he'd heard of his clan's death just like everyone else.
Hystericplague stepped back as Amberpaw basically flew in front of him. He rolled his eyes at his apprentice, who up until just a few moments ago had been cowling in fear, but now seemed so eager. What, was this a family matter or something? When the tom mentioned an unfamiliar name, he began wondering if whatever sickness Crownglass had was affecting his brain as well. "There hasn't been a Seastar as leader for as long as I've been here," he commented dryly, not realizing that the cat in question was Seablossom, or that Crownglass thought he was in Earthclan. So, he was probably accidentally furthering a misunderstanding.
"No Seastar, but Seablossom's here." Amberpaw tried to help his mentor make the connection, an easy mistake if one didn't realize that EarthClan's short lived leader was the queen in their nursery. She'd introduced herself to the clan as Seablossom, not believing herself worthy of caring the title of -star in her name any longer. Amberpaw had tried to protest when they first joined, tell her she'd earned that name, but hadn't gotten through to her. "Seablossom's back at camp. And we can take you there! Right Hysteriplague?" He hoped, StarClan above, he hoped that his mentor would agree and allow him this one little thing. The dark grey tom was twitching with excitement at Crownglass coming home with them, at reuniting his sister and her mate. Just in time for the kits too!
Realization hit him as soon as the name Seablossom was spoken, though the medicine cat's expression didn't change. There were too many cats in the clan for him to remember the story of each and every one of them, and he doubted very few would even be willing to tell him about their past. They would probably expect him to use it against them in some way, and Hystericplague couldn't blame them, because that's something that he would do. "Bringing a stranger into the camp?" he said with a roll of his eyes. Something like that is what leads to trouble, though as he was about to say as much, he took once more glance at his eager apprentice and sighed. "Do as you wish. Just don't get me in trouble." Even with how young the medicine cat was, dealing with others always made him feel like he just aged 100 moons.
