Pythoncrush returned to camp for the second time that day with a catch. Hunting was different in DayClan than it had been in twolegplace but it seemed like he was finally getting the hang of it. Of course, no one congratulated him as he hauled the squirrel to the top of the pile, but he was proud enough of himself. It had been a little over a moon since he'd joined this clan and it still felt alien to him. Instead of napping all day he was expected to patrol and hunt, and he had to constantly be surrounded by other cats. It had been a hard adjustment but he was finally feeling comfortable. Happy with his productivity so far, he paused by the warrior's den to give himself a quick grooming.

Goldenpa--- no, Goldenphantom, had had a restless last few days. The newest member of the Immortal Council was also the youngest by the mile, having been given a warrior name early to cement the title. Of course, Glowstar had chosen her old name. Just when she thought she could shake the remnants of the League off of her, they always appeared to come back and haunt her at their discretion. Even when she asked for something, anything other than -phantom, even for something boring like Goldenpelt, it was denied. Nights had been hard on her, unaccustomed to her new den and any time she did find rest, her dreams were haunted by the past. Gnashing teeth and wild yellow eyes.
It felt like whenever she was picking herself up, life would come in with another sucker punch. Her golden tabby pelt was messy, and her brown eyes had glazed over with exhaustion. It wasn't a good look for the Council and she knew, but she couldn't find it in herself to clean up. Stepping through the threshold of camp, she carried two mice by their tails. Honestly, she was lucky she spotted them before they disappeared underground. Placing them at the base of the pile, a shudder of loneliness crawled up her spine. Approaching the first cat she spotted, she sat next to Pythoncrush, licking a paw and wiping it over her eyes to wake her up. "Nice squirrel. Good work." Ugh, she sounded way deader than she wanted to.

The dark brown tom paused in his grooming, surprised to be addressed by Goldenphantom, having never actually spoken with her before, but he answered in his usual respectful tone, "thank you. You caught two mice, you've also done well." Pythoncrush thought she might look a little worn out. It's wasn't yet sunhigh and he wondered what could possibly have tired this cat out so much. Curious, he asked, "did you have the dawn patrol this morning?"
Perhaps that might explain it but he didn't want to bluntly asked, as it felt rude to point out the exhaustion of a clanmate. Feeling slightly awkward, he unconsciously copied her and licked his paw to wash his ears.

Goldenphantom would have caught his gaze out of the corner of her eye, but she was still a good bit shorter than him and could only see his shoulder. The time hadn't even registered in her mind, and sure enough, when he asked she looked up and realized it still wasn't even sun high. She held back a sigh, regretting even getting out of bed in this condition. But if she stayed, would anything have changed? Still, she certainly didn't have a patrol this morning.
Even if she wanted to lie, it would be a wasted effort. She was an absolutely awful liar, and her colder members of the Council didn't mind telling her. For her own safety of course, but sometimes they didn't need to be so blunt. That held back sigh turned into a yawn as she placed her paw back down on the ground. "No, I just haven't gotten any sleep these last few days." Feeling awkward just admitting it, she stared down at her paws.

Pythoncrush nodded slowly, understanding, "I used to go many nights without sleep in twolegplace," the tip of his skinny tail flicked as a memory momentarily distracted him. Refocusing on his tired clanmate he continued, "it was never easy but I did enjoy how deeply I slept when it finally came. I think I could have fallen asleep right beside the thunderpath with no problem." His attempt at a joke was lame even to him but what else could he say? It's not like he could ask what was keeping her awake, that was hardly an appropriate question to ask an acquaintance. Instead he waited, hoping he seemed inviting enough, without intending to push her.

The golden she-cat didn't want to admit it. Not yet, not to a tom she barely knew just because her heart couldn't stand to be alone. She was Immortal Council, she needed a better grasp on everything. She was so young but basically a deputy, just throwing her emotions around like usual was not exactly a good idea now. Twoleg place, huh? She had similar nights when travelling through there, but somehow this was so much worse. But he didn't push her towards it, and it was comforting to be treated so gently again.
Shakily, she stood up, mouth twitching slightly at his joke. "Heh heh." For her signature laugh, it was small. And she hated how small she felt. "Would you mind walking with me a bit...ugh, sorry, can you remind me your name?"

Relieved that his lame attempt at comedy hadn't made her roll her eyes and walk away, he stood with her without thinking about it.
"Pythoncrush," he replied, not at all offended. There were a ton of cats and he couldn't expect to be remembered among them all. "I would be honored to walk with you, Goldenphantom." The skinny tom stretched and shook his short fur out as though trying to wake himself up again. "Did you want to go anywhere in particular?"

"Sorry bout that, Pythoncrush." She was relieved he agreed so easily, but a little sad she was suddenly taking up all his time. She was the kind to support someone from the background, not be center stage and supported. She thought she didn't need it, or didn't want to trouble anyone with her issues. Even as the pair left the camp, she wasn't sure what she would tell him. She could only hope she'd get over it and a good night's sleep soon enough. Though her nest had only gotten colder.
"I was thinking the Apple Orchard. Have you even been? Or tried an apple?" A small spark came back to her voice as she pulled the conversation away from her. Her pace was somewhat slow, just enough to be noticeable without lagging too much.

Pythoncrush chuckled, "a cat eat an apple?" He'd never heard of that, nor would he have thought to try one himself. "I have been by there, but only to hunt the mice, not the apples." He matched his pace to hers easily, enjoying the leisurely pace. Not wanting to allow an awkward silence to continue, he just started talking, "when I lived in twolegplace I tried blueberries once, they were not very tasty. I've also tried lizard, which was really not for me." He shuddered involuntarily as he remembered the slimy texture.

"Yeah, they're hard to eat and the flavor is probably an acquired taste. But I like it." It reminded her of simpler times. For now, she stayed comfortably inside the borders until she could face the outside world again. She was grateful he matched her leisurely pace, not being able to move much faster than she was. The air was starting to warm, and she could feel her lungs finally begin to loosen some. By the way he talked about blueberries, Goldenphantom didn't think he'd care for apples much. But maybe he'd take a bite just to entertain her. "Yeah, I tried some weird things when I traveled through twoleg place. Mostly things I could get without much of a fight, which was mostly garbage. So I get it."

"Garbage," Pythoncrush shook his head, thought strangle thrilled to hear a twolegplace word used in DayClan, he was still getting used to the different terms used among the clans. "I remember many a night when I forced to rummage through the garbage, not my best moments." He already knew he was going to try an apple today, but he was excited for it. Pythoncrush lived for new experiences, no matter how small. "Although there was always the change of finding chicken." He missed chicken a great deal.

Goldenphantom would use the words the clan used most of the time. When she had time to think about it. Now she didn't really care, especially since Pythoncrush already admitted to having some connections with the city. "Sometimes, we'll go to this thunderbeast refilling station and bring back twoleg food for the ex-kittypets and the like. It's a nice change of pace from usual." Golden remembered the journey clearly, one of her few missions with Glowstar. She would never admit to also missing chicken every now and again.

"Really?" He would very much like to do something like that, "that sounds truly welcome. I feel like I am caught in some weird dream because I have not seen any twoleg things since joining." Though Pythoncrush knew the way, he wasn't willing to go back to twolegplace just yet. A lot had happened there and he hoped very much to one day be able to return. Not that he would dream of divulging that information to a DayClan warrior.

"I don't have the exact number of how many ex-kittypets and the like are in the clan, but I believe it's a small enough number to where it's not done too often. Maybe I'll remind Glowstar whe---haaa-aaaa. when we get back." Goldenphantom found the air warm for an autumn day, snippets of wind ruffling her pelt. She almost started a tangent but was stipped by a yawn, her sleepiness once again hitting her hard. A part of her knew exactly how this would play out, it was like she was living in her own fairytale. Enough to where she barely noticed if the space between them had grown smaller, with the way she swayed slightly as she tried to keep her eyes open. The feathers weaved into her pelt felt heavy, and she finally spoke, "A fox killed the cat that brought me here not too long ago. I've been having nightmares since."

Pythoncrush was surprised to hear such a personal statement from her, she didn't strike him as the type to trust easily. Still, he was honored. And horrified for her. He knew nightmares well and actually suffered from a fear of the dark that had worsened since leaving the near-constant light of twolegplace. "I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish there were a herb to help you get some sleep, nightmares can be relentless." He wished he could give her some actual comfort, but he wasn't sure how to. Pythoncrush was only recently proving to be a good, decent cat but had yet to master what to do in situations like this. So, he just ran his tail lightly down her back as they walked, just once, and then he hoped he hadn't offended her by doing so.

Goldenphantom wished she didn't trust as easily as she did. For such a heartwrenching event, she felt an almost compulsive need to talk about it. She was sure Glowstar or another one of the Council would have lent her a shoulder to cry on, but there was something nice about getting to tell someone outside of the leadership. She was sure there was something Flyingcolors could give her, poppy seeds or whatever, but she didn't quite feel comfortable with the idea of taking something to help with this. She wanted to work this out for herself, but the more her steps slowed, the more her willpower wavered. At least the orchard was in view and she was tired enough to not jump at the slight touch of his tail along her back. Goldenphantom couldn't fight it, now when she craved the soft touch of another so much. She minded the space between them but didn't stop herself from occasionally brushing their pelts together. "I'll get something from Flyingcolors if I don't get any sleep tonight. Hopefully, this walk will tire me out enough."
