Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Dusk was falling, the sky above the dark, towering trees a fiery orange faded with grey; the first of the stars, bright and clear, were beginning to appear, granted free reign over the night by the crisp, quiet breeze clearing the sky of any clouds. Peppermintpaw waited impatiently beside the old, gnarled trunk of the Tree of Wisdom, her fur fluffed up against the chill. Crickets chirped beyond the walls of the camp, the sound repetitive and unceasing; it grated on her nerves, filling her head with buzzing and making her teeth grind together. It was bad enough that she was being forced to fill in until a proper medicine cat could be found; now the new leader she was supposed to be looking after and advising was running precisely thirty-seven seconds behind schedule.
“I don’t mean to rush,” the apprentice growled, never one to treat authority figures with any sort of reverence; they had to earn her respect, and even then it would only be shown in a grudging, grumbling silence instead of her usual drawled insolence, “because I’m sure your beauty routine is so much more important than communing with your ancestors and getting me back to my nest at a respectable time, but I’d really quite like to get to the moon creek within the next moon, if that isn’t too much to ask, Your Soon-To-Be-Majesty.”
She flicked her tail-tip, forcing back a thin smile. Truth be told, she was rather excited — well, as excited as Peppermintpaw could be about anything — about the fact she was only an apprentice and already accompanying her leader to her lives ceremony. She wouldn’t call it a special honour, because she was irreverent about even the StarClan idiots, but it was certainly a nice touch and another little badge of honour to add to her growing list of accomplishments.

Lostsong had spent days trying to prepare herself for the trip to the moon creek, she would be recieving g her lived and leader name, but as the days went by she began to realize there wasn't much she could do except show up. It was all in the paws of Starclan. Hearing the she-cats voice she let out a sigh, she would have been ready by now but her adopted son Mousekit had been crying for her and so most of her time had been spent consoling him and explaining she would be away for a short time.
Shaking her head the ginger and white she-cat took a deep breath and trotted to Pepermentpaws side, happy with whom she had picked to leave in charge while they were away and her son now settled down she was ready to go. "I'm ready, everything is set here until we return." She purred, giving no bad reaction to the apprentices attitude, she actually admired her strong voice and that she used it no matter the cats rank.
Peppermintpaw forced a curt smile that dropped a heartbeat later, snorting softly through her nose and jerking her head towards the camp entrance with a long-suffering sigh. “Might we go, then?” she growled, dragging herself to her paws like she was an ancient elder with aching bones instead of a young apprentice. “I’m so relieved to hear everything will be alright for the two hours we’ll be gone,” she added in a dry, lifeless deadpan, stalking ahead with her heavy stride that was so at odds with her small, scrawny size. “I can finally rest easy knowing my beloved Clan will be safe from harm. Hoo-ray.”
Really, she was mildly fond of the new leader, felt protective of her and her kind heart, even, didn’t want anything to happen to her to turn her cold and hard; she was sweet and had a head on her shoulders, which was more than she could say for quite a few leaders in the forest, namely the insufferably cheerful SummerClan one. No, Lostsong was smart and knew when to be quiet, and she liked her for that, more than she did most other cats. It would be an easy thing to serve her as medicine cat, when that day eventually came, and she was more than a little defensive of her in the meantime; she’d argue in support of her against anyone if the need ever arose, which was a lot coming from Peppermintpaw.
“I think you’ll make a good leader,” she told her after a while in a rough, gruff voice, stomping through the darkening forest without looking at her. “Well, I don’t think it. I know it. It certainly won’t be a complete burden on my part. You have the right... qualities.” This emotional over-sharing was getting awkward. “But don’t go around telling anyone I said that,” she growled. “Reputation to uphold and all that.” She cast a short-lived, dull-eyed smile at the other she-cat.

Lostsong shook her head lightly at the apprentices comment, her eyes becoming serious. "Two hours or two minutes, it doesn't matter. With the two of us gone and no deputy Fallclan is vulnerable, I'd rather show precaution now than to come back and find our classmates hurt or dead." She spoke steadily, as she trudged forward until she was at Pepermintpaws side.
She was quiet for a moment and when the small she-cat spoke again Lostsong ears perked up and a genuine laugh echoed from deep in her chest and out her mouth. "Thank you, Pepermintpaw, and dont worry I wont tell a soul." She gave her a wink, a wide smile on her face. "I'm glad you're traveling with me tonight." The words came out in a purr and she lightly touched her tail tip to the smaller cats shoulder for a moment before pulling it away.
Peppermintpaw rumbled a low acknowledgement in her throat; it almost sounded like a rusty purr. “I’d rather be asleep,” she replied gruffly, “but of all the cats I could be stuck with, I’m moderately okay with it being you.” That was… as much of a compliment as she’d ever given in her life. She felt a little sick, embarrassment stinging the skin under her fur; she was getting soft in her old age. Shrugging of the older she-cat’s tail, she quickened her pace, trotting through the shadow-dark trees. Night had now well and truly fallen, only the faintest hint of burned orange still lingering on the horizon. From one of the towering trees overhead, an owl hooted.
“Now, no more talking,” she growled sternly, then let out a groan. “Oh, you’re not one of those nervous chattering sorts, are you? I can’t stand them. If you are, let me give you a little bit of advice: first of all, don’t. Second of all, StarClan is just a bunch of dead morons with a few fancy party tricks – nothing to be scared of, and the novelty wears off after about five minutes; gets old real fast. They’ll like you just fine. As for the ceremony, I’ve been told it’s pure and utter agony. Nothing I can do about that, but you’ll get over it. Just grit your teeth, say thanks, and it’s done, you’re free from them till the next time they inevitably want something.” Peppermintpaw snorted, shaking her head. Being a medicine cat, she liked well enough; dealing with StarClan, that was what sucked the life out of her. Flicking her tail-tip against Lostsong’s side in a brief attempt at comfort, which, really, she wasn’t very good at, wasn’t very good at any sort of messy feelings, she added, “and I’ll be there the whole time. If I were you, I'd be a bit excited.” She smiled thinly; it was gone in half a second, her face returning to its usual gruffness.

Lostsong let out a purr and smiled. "I wont talk your ear off don't worry, it's to beautiful of a night to be noisy, don't you think?" She looked up at the sky as she walked along, the stars were shinning brightly overhead with no clouds to obscure them. She had to admit that she was excited, she wanted the best for Fallclan but she didn't think she would be taking leadership so soon. Bijou had not been leader long and she was happy to be by his side to help but things quickly took a sharp turn, leaving her to care for the clan.
A light sigh escaped her mouth and she lowered her gaze back down, staring at the path before her. So many things had changed in such a short time, but she was determined.
Peppermintpaw watched her soon-to-be-leader with a small smile for a moment before letting out a quiet grunt and returning her gaze to the path ahead of them, shaking herself out like she was shaking off all the emotions she most often wished she never had; why couldn't she have been born without any feelings, just a head for discovery and a heart to pump blood through her veins? She couldn't serve a leader if she had a soft spot for her; she had to be tough, impartial, cold. Had to be better than that.
By the time the moon had risen clear of the dark treetops silhouetted against the grey-black sky, they had arrived at the moon creek. Thin, wispy clouds covered most of the stars, but the moon was clear and bright, glistening off the burbling water and washing it a shining silver. It seemed a good sign, she thought, in that vague, reluctant way she thought about anything good. Almost fate. StarClan clearly approved of the choice of leader.
"Off you go, then," she directed her, jerking her head towards the creek. "They deduct lives for every minute you're late." A twitch of her whiskers was the only indication she was joking; her almost-glare was still disinterested and flat, despite the small thrum of excited anticipation that tingled in her chest. There might have been a tiny bit of pride in there, too - pride for Lostsong, and pride for herself. This was the first time she would ever escort a leader to StarClan, but it wouldn't be the last. Peppermintpaw sat down beside the quietly bubbling creek, her badly-groomed tail-tip dangling carelessly into the water. To anyone else, the spot might have felt sacred; to her, it was just any old water source that some dead cats happened to fancy.
