11.06.2022 The site has been transformed into an archive. Thank you for all the memories here!
Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The problem of having too many groups for our current member count was brought up by Faded in this thread (and by others before her c:). The thread has quickly gained a lot of posts, so here is a concise summary of what was brought up.
Ideas suggested: 1) Total WCC2 Site Reboot This would involve:
deleting all current clans, perhaps in a site wide plot
creating a new set of clans (current preferred number is 4 clans, 2 outside groups)
finding a method of appointing new staff for said clans/groups, and potentially revamping the Moderators/Administrators
Issues:
A lot of effort went into current territory maps
Certain leadership teams are well-established and work well together
Potential bias in how new staff are chosen
Pros and Cons (quote from Rikatu!)
PROS
ACTIVITY BOOST — Deleting a number of Clans would help boost activity. The point would be to remove the number of people who devote themselves to Clans, and to mingle with other Clans. Especially when there are less, or a simple number of them to choose from.
MORE STAFF ACTIVITY — It's pretty explanatory I think.
MORE ENCOURAGED USER ROLEPLAY — Users would be encouraged to roleplay more within different Clans. This means that people wouldn't be torn between choosing between a total of 14 clans, to a much more reasonable and dwindled down number. If you think about it, that's a main reason for the decrease of activity.
MORE MEANING TO BECOMING A STAFF MEMBER — When there are less Clans with much more active staff, etc, it definitely encourages a boost to want to be chosen as the Leader, Deputy, etc. It gives more meaning to the title, and encourages users who achieve said title to be more active. I'm not saying its 100% surefire, but it's definitely something that would be boosted.
ATTRACTS NEWER USERS — This, I think, is a major one. I've asked multiple people what they like when joining a new site, group, or chat, etc. They like diversity, but at a 4 Clan max. I'm not saying that's exactly the number we need to be, but I am saying that most new users tend to stick to only one or two Clans and Groups. If you've noticed, the first question brought up when a new member joins is "Which Clan should I join?" The point is they form opinions on only joining one or two Clans. Another huge thing I noticed was users like a unique experience ( described below ). It would potentially rake in more users, and more users would be happy to actively have at least one character in a Clan rather than stretching themselves thin, etc. Most users here anyways tend to gravitate and stick to a main Clan, with one or two — three at most — other side Clans.
UNIQUE CLAN IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES — This was the most popular option that I gave, that got a lot of attention. People are more interested in a diverse setting with unique experiences and ideas. At the moment, for Classic, its become a sort of standstill. The "Norm" in my opinion has become trying to make a unique Clan with different belief systems, and/or ranks. Which most of these ideas are unique, and interesting. But in the end it takes away from an actual unique experience. If someone new joins, and see's that there are more Clans that have different and weird twists to them than traditional Clans, it'd definitely be confusing and hard to figure out.
OTHER PRO'S TO BRING UP WITHOUT NEEDING TO EXPLAIN
— more plots within other clans that can last longer, or have significant meaning.
— less work for users ( roleplay is supposed to be fun, not stressful!! )
— much simpler in the long run
CONS
HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE DELETION PROCESS — This is the one thing that would be pretty rough to deal with, aftermath and all. Figuring out which Clans to delete, figuring out Leaders and etc, you get the gist. Its a scary thing to consider. But its also why I think starting from scratch would be the way to unruffle all feathers, especially if there would be a nominating system for Leaders.
EMOTIONAL VALUE — I wont deny, a lot of users have a certain emotional value to a Clan that they are apart of, or invested in. Its the main reason so many people are vastly against the idea. Its hard to choose which Clans, and when your favorite is thought about, a riot happens.
DELETING A CLAN YOU LEAD — Obviously if your Leading a Clan you put a lot of hard work and effort into, your not going to want to delete it. Not only have you devoted a lot of time and effort into it, but it also becomes a child to others. A safe haven, a favorite place, and something with intense emotional value.
THE RULE ABOUT DELETION — This is pretty self explanatory I guess. I personally think this rule comes across as... limiting and at most, clinging to nostalgia. But at the same time I think its important to think for the best of Classic, rather than cling to favorite Clans and original concepts
Other details:
Most people seemed to favor a nomination system for the new leaders or teams that would lead newly created clans
Other suggestions include a contest to come up with backstories or clan names
An 'in-between' roleplay was suggested for the transition period where the clans of WCC2 would roleplay their destruction while the new site was being set up, to ease the tension of having a time where no one is roleplaying
2) Cutting back on current clans
Several leaders have volunteered to give up their groups for deletion (including all the Survival Clans and Springclan). We would keep Classic's lay-out and functionality but simply reduce the number of active groups we currently have. Years have gone into making the clans the way there are today and many people are attached to their characters and creations.
This method allows us to proceed more slowly instead of jumping into a larger change. Groups can be changed, merged, or die off in war plots, without the need for a whole new site.
I apologize for the disproportionate amount of information for one idea. That was the bulk of what was discussed in the thread.
For those interested, Lavellan created THIS survey for members of Classic, and the results can be viewed HERE. This isn't official, just a way of keeping track of who wants what.
- Agreeing on a successful clan criteria/ preventative measures to ensure a clan remains stable, well, and helped [1 week] - Sign ups for staff members to remain on the team [hopefully less than a week] - Figuring out how to keep roleplay going [hopefully less than a week] - Figuring out a criteria for a clan contest [2-4 days] - Making a clan contest [2 weeks] - Figuring out who should be leader and how to figure that out [2 weeks] - Creating new layouts for the clans [indefinite]
SUCCESSFUL CLAN CRITERIA One of them should be establishing what a successful clan should look like. If we brought in new clans, but neglect to come up with a criteria on what makes them successful we could come back into this same conversation again. But if we had a criteria to checkmark when to begin to worry about a clan or if deletion needs to come up we’d be more prepared in the future to recognize the signs. I made up a list, but I’d like feedback so we can change it according to everyone’s input.
An Active Clan: Members: 10 or more Posts Per Clan: 50 or more
Should the clans fail to meet this it could become an alert. Once you get four alerts a discussion will be brought up to help solve why the clans not doing well. Sometimes it’ll be because their are leader tryouts, other times it might be finals week and things are just slow. But if the clan continuously struggle and the discussion agrees clan deletion needs to be considered there will be a site wide vote to decide if the clan is deleted or not. (There would also be ways to work off alerts because clans falter sometimes and that’s okay)
STAFF MEMBERS If we decide to get rid of all the clans and now we have to rewrite everything we’re going to need more staff than just the admins and helper mods. We’ll need passionate moderators who are willing to stay aboard to help out! There will need to be sign ups if such a thing is decided. There's a lot to take care of, storing the forums, making sure we save everyone's cats biographies and keeping them in a well organized place to fish out later.
THE NO ROLEPLAY PERIOD The no roleplay period during this time would be very rough. With school having started we might have to extend the clan contest to a week in a half or more to give everyone time to get their ideas in without being stressed. After that, we'll have to figure out a way to choose leaders which should probably take two weeks. I’m guessing that every person who wants to be a leader can write a little bit about themselves, this way if people are a bit newer they have a chance for the community to know them.
AFTER THE LEADER VOTE/ CLAN DECISION Because many of us agreed that not everyone's good at layouts it would be unfair to ask for a layout in the clan creation contest. But because we agreed to that we now have to code layouts to whatever was decided. Plus we can’t start making layouts early because the clan leader probably would want a say in how they want the layout designed. Because of this there unfortunately wouldn’t be a members page for a time being, but maybe joining threads can get started. Layouts can take 1-2 weeks depending on what the leader wants and how much time the coder has. During this time some of us might already be neck deep in school and given the limited coders we might struggle a little here so we’ll just have to be prepared.
