Blackpaw sniffed around the base of a singular lonesome tree she found. There was the smell of mice all around the base but not a mouse in sight. It was honestly extremely annoying, she wanted to be able to bring back plenty of prey to her clan but the prey was hiding. Maybe it was because of the chilling weather? The young apprentice really wasn't entirely certain on that. She let out a lengthy puff and stalked away from the tree with her nose high in the air to locate her prey elsewhere.
"Hey! Are you giving up?!" came an annoyingly-shrill voice from nearby. Having (entirely unnecessarily) appointed herself as SpringClan's Official Investigator of Tarantulastar-Related Happenings, Mangopaw had been spying on Blackpaw for the better part of thirty seconds now. Well, perhaps spying was a little too strong of a word; it was more like she'd happened to catch sight of Blackpaw turning away from the tree and inserted herself into her denmate's hunting trip.
"SpringClan warriors never give up! They keep on going even when..." She trailed off uncertainly, eyes darting from side to side before finally averting them to the ground. "...Oh wait, were you just gonna try looking somewhere else? ...Carry on, then."

Blackpaw rolled her eyes dramatically at Mangopaw. "You could have just asked me ahead of time." She began, stiff and a hint of annoyance permeating her voice but the apprentice let it go quickly with a flick of her ear and she began to move forward again. "There's nothing here that I can find but there is mouse scent everywhere. It's enfuriating, truly. I, as a proud apprentice of Springclan, would never give up but there was nothing here in the first place." She huffed again.
Mangopaw blinked; that response had been a little more fiery than she had been expecting. It seems this apprentice has more determination than me. Foiled again...
"Maybe they hid because of all the noise I was making earlier when I stubbed my toe..." she murmured, narrowing her eyes. "Well, I'm off to try nearer to the SummerClan border - I wonder if it's too cold for them over here, or something. You coming?"

"Of course, I need to keep you from scaring off all the prey in the territory." Her response was quick and without hesitation. "Besides, I want to make sure those stinky summerclan cats stay on their side of the border." She couldn't bring it upon herself to admit that she just wanted to hunt with the other apprentice and that her company would be nice.
Mangopaw huffed. "Rude! I wasn't that loud," she muttered, though she didn't really care that much anymore - Blackpaw wasn't screwing around like Mangopaw thought she had been, and was even going above and beyond to check the border. What a loyal apprentice, even if they had been insulting each other a mere few seconds ago. "...You have a point about SummerClan, though.

"Especially since they had that crow food sickness going around their territory. They need to eat their own prey whether they get sick or not. I heard about it from one of their apprentices, apparently they had to move camp and a lot of cats died because their prey was poisoned by their own water. Springclan doesn't need something so awful." Blackpaw was very caught up in clan politics and she one day aspired to stand on the pedestal of a leader and to follow in her father's footsteps. As the previous leader's daughter she felt like there was a very high expectation on her head.
[ Now that I'm thinking about it, didn't Tarantulastar do some really awful things? I can't remember what was happening with all the politics before the move xD ]
( yeah, he was pretty terrible xD he was a brokenstar 2.0 and promoted kits way before they were six moons old and probably some other things that i forgot oops lmao )
Mangopaw paled at Blackpaw's words, a chill running down her spine before she shook it off. "Ew..." she muttered, casting her eyes downward. "That's terrible...I hadn't heard." She took a second to glance briefly at Blackpaw; her first impression of her fellow apprentice hadn't been great, mostly due to the fact that in Mangopaw's eyes, Blackpaw's reputation as Tarantulastar's daughter had preceded her. Now, she wasn't so sure about her. If Blackpaw paid that much attention to what was going on in rival Clans, then surely she couldn't be another tyrant like her father, right? She must really care a lot...
Well, either that, or she was planning an evil takeover - but Mangopaw preferred to think she was just conscientious.
"...Then you're right, we definitely don't want it spilling over into our territory," she replied, a glint of determination in her eyes. "I hope they can recover fully, though, if they haven't already..."

[ Yeah I should probably go look up some Tarantulastar history so I can better rp Blackpaw xD Maybe I will have her bacome evil, or keep her good. I all of a sudden realized how many doors I have and she will probably be very defensive about herself tbh ]
"What happens to Summerclan cats is no business of mine as long as they keep to their own territory. I have enough concerns in Springclan as it is. I'm not blind to what you all think of me." As Tarantulastar's daughter she not only had a high expectation to live up to, but she knew what kind of reputation she had. Cats frequently avoided her unless they were casting suspicion upon her and few liked her. It made the apprentice more prickly and cold the more she was treated as such. She had so much to prove and so few chances to prove herself. Maybe if she showed how dedicated she was to Springclan she could change popular opinion of herself, maybe she could even dare to hope for a friend and a family, but she had a long way to go and no one to stand beside her on the way up.
Mangopaw stilled for a second. Blackpaw's words were true; the apprentice did have a reputation within the Clan because of her father, and it wasn't necessarily a good one. Perhaps they had judged her a little too unfairly - although Mangopaw preferred the term exercised caution.
"People are just scared," she offered quietly, unable to quite look Blackpaw in the eye. "Tarantulastar...He almost destroyed this Clan. No one wants a repeat of him, and I think that's why....They're cautious of you," she finally said, rather lamely. It was a flimsy excuse, and she was beginning to realise it. "I thought that way too, but to be honest, just from talking to you now, you don't seem that much like him..."

"I wasn't kitted yesterday. I know what he did and it was wrong. He wasn't always bad, though. I... I don't know what happened." She admitted, her voice faltering a bit to the end. He had never been harsh with his kits, he wasn't always there and left them a bit more to Spottedfox but he had never been bad to his own kits. "I guess I'm lucky I don't resemble him." She clenched her jaw together. Oh how must her brothers who resembled him more must be struggling with everything. The worst part-she couldn't even bring herself to hate him. She knew all about his atrocities and instead of hating him she just pretended like they never happened, swept them under her nest and laid down over their open family secrets.
"Whatever, it doesn't matter. He's dead. Let's just go find prey." She flicked her tail and kept walking, holding her black head high as usual.
[ I can't find any thread that actually says what happened to Tarantulastar so I'm assuming he's dead lol ]
( i think he's a rogue right now, but springclan kinda assume he's dead because he was injured when he was driven out and nobody's heard from him since xD it might be interesting to develop on that more if feather returns! )
Mangopaw nodded slowly as their conversation abruptly ended, trailing slightly behind her fellow apprentice. Blackpaw had raised a good point - what was it like for her siblings, who so very much resembled the tyrant who once almost destroyed their home? Did even Mangopaw treat them a little differently, a little more harshly compared to Blackpaw - who admittedly, she hadn't treated very well before their outing today. Something began to tug at her heart, and she frowned at the unfamiliar sensation. Oh, StarClan. Is this feeling...guilt? Peachstar always said there'd come a day when I became self-aware, but I didn't think it would be so soon...
Mangopaw, who despite her sudden epiphany still hadn't learned how to not treat friendships like a business deal, cleared her throat. "Blackpaw, would you like to be...friends?" she coughed, giving the apprentice a bright look. "I think it could be a mutually beneficial relationship, you know. People trust me - kinda - and maybe if they saw us being friendly, they'd start seeing you're not bad at all!" It was a pretty farfetched and borderline patronizing suggestion, but Mangopaw was a pretty patronizing person at times. "Besides, if we work together to hunt, we'd probably bring in an impressive amount of prey, right? That's the kind of thing that gets you respect around here..."

( I figured it was probably something like that but he is dead to Blackpaw xD )
"You know that's not how friendships work, right?" SHe commented, her whiskers twitching as she looked back at Mangopaw. She didn't want to use another cat just to make herself look better. Using cats for her own self image was something her father would have done, Blackpaw wanted desperately to be good and loyal and a cat others could trust. If she used the other apprentice now she doubted that she would be able to do that. "I don't mind hunting with you, but I'm not going to be friends out of business in my own clan. Come on, let's just go get some prey." She motioned Mangopaw forward, opening her jaws for prey. Blackpaw had never really had a friend in her life yet but she knew that just saying she would be the apprentices friend was not how that was supposed to work.
