Yumemi-kepa sighed as she stalked her way through the tall grass of the loners' territory, in an uncharacteristic bad mood. The newly-appointed sage of Absum Lux hadn't been doing so well with her first official 'mission', as she insisted on calling it. Shae, the current heda of he coalition, had sent her off on a quest to find an elixir for immortality, a curse to raise the dead, and like, a cool tree she could climb or something. Okay, maybe that last part was Yumemi's own addition, but still - no results yet, on any front.
Currently, she was on a quest to find someone with a little bit more specialised knowledge, someone who'd been around and seen the sights for a couple of seasons. There were a few healers out and about in the loner territory, but none of the ones she'd met yet seemed...eccentric enough to help her. "Hellooo~?" she called out, in her usual chirpy tone. Whatever her mood was, her incessant cheerfulness never quite seemed to leave her voice. "Anyone out there? I'm looking for someone who can help me!"

Loner Land tm, was more sparse than one would think. Kittypets stayed mostly in the confines of their homes, rogues stamped around angrily in a huff and loners never really cared where they went and what they were doing. Consider Funkbeat, self proclaimed king of Loner Land. Soon to be renamed Funk’s Foyer. Normally he was off harassing anyone he could find, tending his gardens or cackling to himself maniacally. Now he was laying on his back in the tall grass, his tail flicking in boredom.
His ears perked up when a surprisingly loud voice screeched in his ears. Looking up, he saw the silhouette of Yumemi-kepa against the sun, far closer than he realized one was. “Hey, watch where you’re going.” He didn’t move, his tone not particularly serious.
Yumemi-kepa let out a loud, undignified shriek of terror, looking around wildly amongst the grass before she finally caught sight of Funkbeat's prone form. Oh, it's just a complete stranger! she thought, breathing an internal sigh of relief. No danger there.
"Oops," she said with an apologetic grin, stepping carefully around the tom so that she was standing over him. She cleared her throat awkwardly. "Ahem. Um, thank you for warning me you were lying down there! I could have...stepped my paw right into your throat and killed you or something." Yeah, that was a great line to lead with. "You don't happen to know any healers around here, or just like, some real weirdos? I'm on the lookout for some...similarly-weird information."

A laugh bubbled in his throat, which he quickly let out despite his ears ringing. It was deep and a tad menacing. He couldn't tell what was funnier; her shriek of fear or her opening line. It'd take a lot more to kill than that. Cats, like all life, were surprisingly resilient despite all the ways you hear they can die. Or seen. Depends on who's talking.
"Healers? Yes. Weirdos? Not necessarily." Sure, his ways were eccentric and holistic, but they weren't weird. They were merely facts everyone wanted to throw away as fiction, "Why. Who's asking? You're no loner. No, you only smell of bad memories and blood." He didn't move, merely looking up with a shine of curiosity in his eyes.
Yumemi squinted. "Me! I'm asking!" she huffed, taking a cautionary sniff of her pelt. ...Yeah, she did kind of smell of blood - probably should have tried washing that off a bit more thoroughly, but in her experience, it often wasn't worth it . But bad memories? What did that mean? Maybe he's just one of those...poetic types.
"You're right though. I'm no loner," she chirped. "I'm Yumemi-kepa, the newest sage of Absum Lux! Currently under new management," she added with a wink. "Um, what were you saying about those not-weirdo healers? Something about their names, and where to find them, and their backstories and their likes and dislikes and how to get through to them in general?"

"Absum Lux. Without Light. You're something. Trying to get help from the very loners your group chased out of the town." His gaze shifted back to the sky. He doubted any of the healers would help her. Most held grudges, the rest didn't know enough for her to find whatever answer she was looking for. Funkbeat was one of the former, not that he was particularly attached to the town.
"What could some magic whatever from AL want with a simple loner healer?" His curiosity was a little piqued.
"Wait, that's what Absum Lux means?" Yumemi-kepa frowned. "I always thought it was slang for, like, Awesome Deluxe or something." She paused briefly, getting lost in her own head before pulling herself out of her thoughts. "And hey! I never chased anyone out of the city," she frowned, "and neither did the new heda, by the way. Like I said, under new management! And we're trying to fix a few mistakes they made in the past." Well, Yumemi-kepa was, at least. The majority of combatants in the group didn't seem to particularly care about what direction the coalition headed in next.
"The heda's interested in..." What had Shae called it? "Transmutation," she finally decided upon, the word feeling awkward and foreign in her mouth. "And alchemy," she added, "with a focus on necromancy and immortality!" There, those were some words she knew. "And also developing new poisons, and stuff, but that's...my own personal thing. Um, so, you know anyone who could help me with that?" she asked, blinking at him innocently.

Necromancy? Immortality? Transmutation? Interesting, very interesting. Funk's medicine focused on the mind and how it affected the body, but he had tried a few things here and there. Whether they were really trying to change made no difference to him. What's done was done. And he liked to look forward and not back.
"All right, all right. You won't need to beg me this time, lucky you. Doctor Funkbeat is in the house." Funkbeat rolled to his side before standing. He stood over Yumemi-kepa and shook the strands of grass out of his fur, "You no doubt know of one medicine cat who poisoned their entire clan? That was me." Poisoned. Not killed. Not as heart wrenching but just as scary. It was a surprisingly niche tale. He expected it to have spread around the groups by now. But instead it was used as a scary tale for loner kits. Disappointing, but he'd work on it.
( let's pretend i didnt lose this thread for ten whole days )
Yumemi-kepa grinned. "Doctor Funkbeat, nice!" she purred. "Very funky. I like it." Come to think of it, she had heard of a medicine cat who'd poisoned his entire Clan, though the weird little loner kit she'd been talking to about the incident had been kind of out of touch with reality, and made it out to be some kind of demonic possession, rather than the machinations of her definitely-totally-sane new friend. This was much cooler! "So, how'd you do it?" she asked, eyes wide. "Made up some new disease and poisoned them all with fake meds? Dropped something in the water, waited it out? Took the Clan hostage and-" She slapped her tail over her mouth abruptly. "Wait, you probably wanna teach me some base things first before you go spilling all your secrets, right? So sorry! I can wait," she said, promptly sitting down and wrapping her tail neatly over her paws.

Funkbeat sounded more like a childish alias than his actual name. Mostly he got told how strange it was. He rarely got complimented on it so it was a nice change. He tilted his head as she talked. The actual set of events was far simpler yet more complicated than what she said. Poisoning a clan's food supply is harder than one thought. It took a lot of planning and set up, but the reward was far nicer than he expected. Watching everyone shiver and fall, eyes glaze over as their fates hung in the balance. Oh well, he'd talk about it later.
"I mean, how much do you already know?" He asked, flicking his tail, "That mentor of yours smart enough to tell you what poppy seeds are and how to use them?"
Yumemi-kepa flashed back to her latest training session with her mentor at the mention of poppy seeds. "Poppy seeds are painkillers! And, um, distress-soothers! That's what Pluto told me," she exclaimed. "...And then he got mad at me because I mentioned that I fed them to a nursing queen once, before I joined the coalition, and you're not supposed to do that, apparently. Although it's not like I fed them to an Absum Lux cat, so I don't know what he was so mad about..." She trailed off, gaze flickering towards Funkbeat uncertainly. "...So I know that much now, at least. Wait, does this mean you poison everyone with those tiny little seeds?!"

"I mean, yeah." Funk yawned. It was gonna be like this, huh? "Anyone can die from overdosing on anything. Poppy seeds are easy, since everyone likes to take too many for pain. Queens are the most susceptible since they're in a weaker state from supporting kits. You can always mix poppy seeds with foxglove seeds. They look similar. Only a trained eye can tell the difference. Foxglove seeds are easy to overdose on too, since you normally use them for heart issues and taking one more than you should can result in heart failure." He was rambling, he didn't care. This is what she wanted right. Still, she must either be very new or this Pluto must not be that good of a teacher.
"Wow..." Yumemi-kepa breathed, eyes wide with admiration - perhaps somewhat misguided, but still, admiration. "And you just knew all that, and you just did it! That's so...cool." Her eyes shone with a worrying amount of awe at the tom standing before her. "...So, how am I supposed to tell the difference between poppy seeds and foxglove seeds? Pluto hasn't taught me about those yet." She may have stumbled across them back when she'd been a traveller, but her healing skills those days had mostly consisted of feeding a cat something random and remembering what it did to them. "I wouldn't wanna mix those two up. Unless I do wanna," she said coyly, raising her eyebrows at Funkbeat.

It was definitely not misguided. Least to Funk it wasn't. He was great, after all. Truly the best. It was so easy to impress her, almost too easy.
"Poppy seeds are circular black seeds. Foxglove seeds have a brownish tint to them in the sun and are more oblong." It'd be best to show, but he didn't have any, so tell would do, "And, you know, get poppy seeds from poppy plants and foxglove seeds from foxglove plants. Simple." He learned this the hard way, taking some after an injury and really only living cause he was close to his twoleg home. Suffering the vet a few days, he soon left. It would become a routine they would all soon get used to.
