Depression clear as dawn trailed over her paws as Pearlyshell disappeared out of camp. The fluffy cream she-cat had spent most of her life trying hard to be the cat she never could be. Her beautiful blue eyes followed the bends and curves of the ground as she made her way through the territory. She was usually the one holding up a fake smile and pretending everything was okay, but the former acecoop simply couldn't bring herself to mask it any longer. She was broken like the mussel shells that littered the edge of a brook. There was no usefulness in her now. At least, that is what she believed.
A lot of outsiders looked upon him and gave an exasperated chuckle, for he was the ceaseless adventurer. A journeyman feeling his way through life one disaster at a time, never settling down, never sitting still. It wasn’t in his nature. He was wild and free, the way he was meant to be, and no one could take that from him. Not even his own sister.
Ashley, rather unusually, found himself not running from some new predator or getting himself into trouble with an animal that was minding its own business (and would chase him later) but instead sitting in the herb patch with a disgruntled frown on his face. He’d entered the area in hopes of being helpful, but instead... He wrinkled his nose. He couldn’t understand how anyone could look at this stuff and see anything other than green with the occasional pop of color. He shook his head. Well, there went that idea. With his luck if he went through with his plan he’d return to the vrachi — and acecoop — with death berries and it’d be taken as a personal offense. He snorted. Thus was the self-centered mind of a royal. They were all the same.

Pearlyshell kept her pace and remained in her clouded trance until she stumbled into the tom. "Wha--?" Her eyes focused and she let out a yelp of surprise. "Oh, I'm sorry Ashley. I was not paying attention to where I was going." She meowed hastily. Embarrassment made her ears burn hot on her head. How in the world had she missed him standing there? What cat wouldn't notice another before tripping all over them? She would never stop being a burden to others, it seemed...
The tom grunted, whirling around, 95% of his muscle prepared to face a predator. Instead what he found was a disgruntled, partially disoriented white and ginger she-cat looking worse for wear. He frowned and blinked in confusion at her, reaching out to steady her. "It's fine," he muttered, looking her over as subtly as he could. Was she injured? Sick? She seemed completely out of it. Had she eaten something wrong? Why was he worried? Why did he care? "Are you okay? You look a little..." He leaned back and lifted his paws to put on a brilliant representation of what looked like a drugged fool swaying on his feet, one eye widening more than the other, jaw slightly slack. He quickly snapped out of it and continued to stare at her, convinced that that little display was enough to finish his question and still make sense.

She kept her eyes down but watched his impersonation with a bit of mild amusement. It quickly faded away, though, as she realized how weak and frail she probably appeared. "I'm okay." She responded quickly, not meeting his gaze. "Again, I sorry I interrupted your...er... uh, what you were doing..."
Ashley blinked, tilting his head. He hadn't drawn the proper reaction he was expecting from her; he thought maybe a chuckle, at the very least, but instead it only seemed to make her more upset. His pelt itched as he glanced away from her, gritting his teeth. He had to admit, he felt a little humiliated. It was the first time he didn't automatically know just what to do to make a lady interested in him; he glanced to the side, where he was originally trying to find herbs. "That's alright, I was actually wondering: Did you need any more herbs in the store?" He blinked. "I'm not tasked with anything today and didn't want to laze about camp."

Searing pain nearly brought her tumbling down at his question. Did he not know? The former acecoop had just recently been replaced by that... foreigner. Kaliko had swooped in to take her role like the perfect, beautiful cat she was. Of course the clan fawned over her golden-cream locks and incredulous ability to heal any ailment with a charming smile and wave of her tail. Then there was that honey-smooth accent that the toms simply swooned over. No, no. She must not be bitter. Kaliko was a kind cat and had treated her with sympathy and warmth when she was demoted.
"Ah, sorry." She apologized once she realized she had been silent for too long. "No, I do not need any herbs. I am not the acecoop any longer." Her voice cracked with shame and she continued to stare down at her paws. "I don't know what to do anymore..."
Her sudden, nearly knee-buckling, earth shattering misery cut him like a blade and he found himself resisting the urge to stumble back in shock. Melodramatic or not, this feline was suffering; she was internalizing all of it, but he could see it plain as day. His eyes slid to the corner, then to the ground. He wasn’t... exactly the best councilor. But he could try his best, at least in this situation. It’s not exactly like we have anyone else. “Oh. I see. And, uh. How does that make you feel?”

Pearlyshell glanced up at his face. Was he feeling...bad for her? Oh no... She hadn't meant for anyone to feel sorry for her. "Ah, you really don't have to ask me." She responded quickly, yet softly. The once-beautiful, young cat had seen much hardship and pain in her life but she never wanted anyone to bear that burden for her. Could her own pain have caused Springlockedgrave's desire to die such a horrible death? She needed to distract him from her misery. It would kill her if she wore down another cat. "Well, would you mind helping me out? I'm a voiny now and I'm not sure how to hunt..."
The frown that came across his face was fast and hard as he listened to her quick backpedal. Why. Why did she feel she had to hide her emotion? He was the only one that could do that. Not Pearlyshell, who was far too sweet, too gentle, too kind to feel like she couldn’t express herself. He turned away from her, though, not wanting to push her. Yet.
“Alright, well. Let’s get started. You’re not going to be useful to anyone if you can’t get the basics down.” He chuckled and padded forward a few paces, turning to face across from her.
“Step one. Your crouch. Did Springlockedgrave ever teach you the hunting crouch?”
