Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
This thread takes place after SpringClan has fallen to Cicero and his group and Cardinalheart has fled with the rest of the Scattered members. They have taken shelter for now just outside the Valley near the WinterClan border.
Cardinalheart placed Shiningkit on the ground, the young kit had tired on the journey out of SpringClan territory and Cardinalheart's whole body ached from their quick escape from SpringClan and Cicero. He'd chosen to lead the group of cats who'd chosen to follow him through SpringClan's Valley and over the border. The Valley had always provided fresh water and good hunting so he was hoping that the valley on the other side of the border would sustain them long enough until he figured out what to do. Truthfully Cardinalheart was surprised any of his Clanmates had decided to follow him. He'd done nothing but let them down lately, first by not stepping up and taking over when Peachblush stepped down and then letting Eternalstar torment the Clan and then again but not being able to protect them when Cicero attacked, so he was ever so appreciative of their support. "We will rest here, at least for tonight." he stated. Making decisions and taking the lead felt wrong, especially knowing he should have done it so much sooner, but he was determined to make up for his mistakes. "We will need to hunt and make shelter for the night at least and in the morning we will decide where to go from here." he added. There was more he wanted to say as he looked at his Clanmates. He desperately wanted to apologize for the mess they were in but he couldn't find the words and somehow he knew a 'sorry' just wouldn't cut it. "Wolfspider, Finchpaw, and Pumpkinking, why don't you three go hunting and see what you can find, the rest of us will begin to make a den." he decided.
___
Wolfspider nodded curtly when Cardinalheart announced his plans. The last thing Wolfspider really wanted to do at the moment was hunt, he was tired and angry at having to leave his home but this was still far better than being trapped under Cicero's control. He glanced at his apprentice, Finchpaw and at Pumpkinking before making a sweeping motion with his tail for Finchpaw to follow him.
Zinfandel watched the three called out head off and send a sideways look towards Cardinalheart, the balinese tom had a slowly dripping bloody cut down his shoulder. Having gotten got by one of the rouges wicked claws as he slipped by them and out of camp. The parting shot seemed a light punishment in light of the events that had transpired though. Turning he licked at the blood now only sluggishly surfacing. Blue eyes narrowed in frustration, he was not born into Springclan, in fact had come to join at the urging of Eternalstar. But it had become his home and he wanted nothing more than to go back and reclaim it.
But then the memory or vicious grins and sharp claws flashed in his mind. They had kits and apprentices with them. It was much to risky to go back with only their small numbers.
At Cardinalheart's announcement to stop, Whitepaw froze short of the shaking in his legs. He might be old enough to have been named a warrior if he had followed that path, but that didn't mean he'd deal with what just happened easily. Eternalstar was dead and now they didn't even have their home any more. Had it really been worth it for him to have come to SpringClan? His mother died for this. It was the tang of blood breaking through his own fear that shook the apprentice out of his thoughts. Mismatched eyes locked onto Zinfandel, easily picking out the wound on his shoulder. It didn't matter if it was worth it. He was all the small band of SpringClan cats had in terms of a healer, and he couldn't let his fear get in the way of that. StarClan, not even Smokecloud came...
"I need to clean that wound up," he meowed, voice hollow and automatic. With a shake of his head he added, "I need to check everyone for injuries. Especially the hunting party." His voice sounded less distant as he went on, though at the mention of the trio Cardinalheart named he stared after them. He felt he should check them before they left, but at the same time they needed prey. Surely none of them would hunt if they were too seriously injured. Looking back towards the deputy he said, "I need herbs. Cobwebs at least." He didn't have time to grab anything before they left, the panic and terror overwhelming the bobtail so he didn't even think to try. He had nothing to work with. StarClan, how would they ever possibly get back home like this?
(blue just in case you didn't know, Smokecloud didn't stay because he wanted to follow Cicero. He stayed because he felt like he couldn't escape with the others and needed to stay to tend to those who couldn't make it out! ^^ I was thinking that maybe Smokecloud could have helped Whitepaw escape with Cardinalheart!)
Finchpaw had carried Dovekit out and set her beside her sister, Shiningkit before dipping her head respectfully to Cardinalheart as he asked her to join a hunting party. She began following her mentor then paused when Whitepaw offered to check for wounds. She had a few scratches from a rogue who had tried to stop her but none were serious. She figured they could wait until she finished her hunting and that way, Whitepaw had time to collect the herbs he needed for her.
Dovekit wrapped around Shiningkit for comfort. Her nightmare had come true. She buried her face into her sister's fur, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Cardinalheart nodded in response to Whitepaw, taking a few moments to think. "I'll go and help you collect some herbs. Zinfandel can stay with Lightstep and the kits so they aren't alone." Cardinalheart decided. "I don't want anyone wandering off alone, we don't know what we'll run into out here and I don't want anyone attacked by foxes, badgers, or rogues." he said loud enough for everyone, including the departing hunting patrol to hear. The last thing he wanted was to lose more Clanmates. He turned to face Whitepaw again. "Lead the way, I'll do my best to help you but aside from cobwebs I have no idea what I'm looking for." he said.
____________
Wolfspider turned his gaze to Finchpaw as they headed deeper into the unclaimed Valley and farther away from familiar territory. "Stay alert for any signs of foxes or anything dangerous and if you see or smell one let me know immediately." Wolfspider instructed.
________
"It'll be okay." Shiningkit whispered to her sister, silently hoping to herself that it was true. It had to be okay, this wouldn't last forever. Shiningkit already missed her warm den and the SpringClan camp, suddenly the thought hit that there was a possibility she'd never get to be an apprentice or warrior of SpringClan but she quickly pushed the thought away.
"If we're going to survive, we can't just build a den and expect them not to find us- or at least catch our trail. We need to keep moving." Specklepaw's voice was almost unrecognizable among the crowed, his usual musical tone faded. "I'm not going to sit on my tail and build a den while those heathens can be planning their next target! We need to get the word out!" He tried to keep his voice down though it was hard to contain his raw passion. He faced Cardinalheart, looking the older tom in the eyes, yellow pools about to overflow. "Please, we're close to WinterClan, let me go and look for help." He was almost begging at this point. While before he would have used this tactic to get out of trouble, this time it was out of genuine fear and determination. Specklepaw didn't want to die, not by starvation or by the paws of rogue. He wanted to live. He wanted his home back. He didn't know what to do, and he wanted his siblings.
Finchpaw nodded to Wolfspider and followed her mentor into unknown territory. She held her composure well but inside, she was breaking down in fear and anxiety. She had just lost her home, her leader, everything. She let her tail dragged the ground as she walked, trying to keep alert but at the same time, occasionally zoning off, lost in the memories of what used to be her home.
-----------
Dovekit was grateful she had her sister with her. She was more close to Shiningkit than she was with Cardinalkit but she was grateful to have them both there with her. At least they had each other and that is what was more important. Dovekit then perked her ears with interest as Specklepaw began begging cardinalheart to allow him to find help.
Cardinalheart met Specklepaw's gaze steadily. "We will keep moving but right now we need to eat and rest. Why don't you help Whitepaw and I gather some herbs so Whitepaw can treat any injuries and then after that you and I will go and talk to WinterClan?" Cardinalheart suggested. He admired the young tom's determination to get their home back but he refused to send anyone, especially an apprentice through unknown land and onto another Clan's territory. WinterClan were known for taking prisoners and at the very worst Specklepaw could be attacked by something on the way there or back and it wasn't a risk Cardinalheart was willing to take at the moment.
The mottled tom nodded and lowered his gaze as he felt the tears start to soak his cheeks. He shuffled his paws and scraped the leaves below him, gritting his teeth and erupting into a low growl. How dare these... These absolute monsters. How dare they barge into SpringClan, kill their leader, and take over the place like it's been theirs all along. This bugged him so much. Trying to collect his composure, Specklepaw made his way over to Whitepaw. "Where do you wanna start looking?"
Some of the tension that had settled in Whitepaw faded, at least a little, when Cardinalheart offered himself and Specklepaw to help him. Even if the latter was likely as much to distract the other apprentice from his thoughts of getting WinterClan's help as it was to help. Nodding first at the deputy and then the apprentice, he said, "Cobwebs will help with anyone still bleeding or who starts bleeding at any time." He glanced around, eventually nodding his head off away from SpringClan territory - he didn't want to risk running into any of Cicero's rogues if he could at all help it - as he told Specklepaw, "Let's look that way. While we're out, we can look for goldenrod as well. It has bunches of little yellow flowers along the ends of the stems," he explained, trying to think how to describe the plant without reference. Hopefully one of them would be able to find some goldenrod quickly to make the process of gathering more much easier. He glanced back towards the cats that remained, hoping that the trio would return to just as many as they left, before he padded off with a meow of, "We'd better not wait around. Hopefully there'd be enough fresh growth to properly treat everyone."
Zinfandel headed over towards the kits, looking around briefly for Lightstep within the crowd but not seeing her. The soft tom felt a flash of worry but pushed it aside for the moment. Determined to help comfort the kits best he could. This event would most likely scar them for life, perhaps change how they grew up even and he wanted to mitigate as much damage as possible. "Dovekit, Shiningkit, hey why don't you help me scout around a bit? Just around here of-course nowhere far." He hoped that making them think they were helping would give them some sort of purpose in this unsure time.
Dovekit exchanged a glance with her sister before nodding in agreement. "Okay..." The naturally nervous she-kit rose to her shaky paws. "W-what are we scouting for?"
"Just little things! Perhaps we can find some cobwebs of our own for when Whitepaw gets back. Or if we do end up having to spend the night here perhaps we can find a cozy spot? This must be your first time out of camp right?" He asked with bright eyes, keeping his tone even as to not show his own nerves.
"O-okay" she stammered again, unsure of all this. "Y-yes. This is our first time out..." She heard an eagle cry in the distance and she coward down. She didnt like being out in the forest when she was so small and helpless.
Cardinalheart nodded in response to Whitepaw and he started off deeper into the Valley, hoping to find what they were looking for.
______
Shiningkit's gaze shot upward at the sound of the eagle and she crouched next to her sister. "Where would we make a nest though? It's too open out here." Shiningkit meowed, her gaze scanning the valley that stretched on for what seemed like forever, suddenly aware of how exposed they all were.
_____
"Rabbit!" Wolfspider whispered to Finchpaw. A few feet ahead of them, the brown rabbit was munching on the grass, blissfully unaware of the cats in the distance.
Shining kit was right, Dovekit thought. There was a lot of room out there. It was too open. Dovekit pressed against her sister, watching the sky with worried eyes.
-----
Finchpaw halted beside her mentor as Wolfspider detected the rabbit. She crouched down and waited for Wolfspider's next instructions.
Specklepaw nodded as he listened to Whitepaw describe the flower. He slipped into the forest trailing behind the deputy, hoping the faster they can find this flower the sooner that he can venture into WinterClan with Cardinalheart.
Cardinalheart was easily able to find several cobwebs and set about delicately collecting them.
________
"Why don't you wait here and I'll sneak around to the other side of the rabbit and chase it towards you?" Wolfspider suggested to Finchpaw. There was no way either one of them would be able to outrun or out maneuver the rabbit with as tired as they were and on unfamiliar land, trapping it between the the two of them was their best option at this point.
