As he ran through the southern fields of Brook’s territory, his newly appointed apprentice at his heels and a fox chasing after them, he reflected on the 1%. Of course it would be his luck.
The young kadet was terrified as she sprinted next to her mentor Ashley. She swears the fox was snapping at heels as her and her mentor headed for a large tree.
"Patined, flash lesson! Climb that tree! Hurry!
The young calico Devon Rex felt her paws ache as she dug into the ground and then kicked off leaping at the tree with all her might. The adrenaline carrying her paws and muscles up the tree a thing that she had never done before. But it would seem her first tree climbing lesson ended as a crash course to save her and her mentor's life.
Though he wanted to keep his eyes fixed on the scurrying form of his kadet, he knew that for both of their sakes he needed to keep going. Clenching his jaw, he spurned himself to move faster, baiting the fox to continue following him with several curses he threw over his shoulder at the red and brown form. When they were several lengths from the she-cat's location and he felt confident that the fox wouldn't attempt to go back to her, he coiled his muscles and sprang for a large oak. He'd made it halfway up the trunk with the leap itself, though a sharp cut of pain sliced through his paw and along his arm, nearly causing him to topple back to the ground, though he quickly secured his claws in the bark and scrabbled as best he could the rest of the way up. Selecting a branch that was a good distance from the ground and the snarling jowls of the predator, he sighed and leaned against the trunk, glancing at his paw. It was sprained, if not awesomely broken judging by the slight tilt his paw held. He groaned inwardly. Perfect. He only hoped Paintedpaw had made it out better than he had.
