Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. She remembered color better than anything; color is emotion, it shifts like the tide. Red for passion, orange for energy, yellow for happiness, green for stability, blue for trust, purple for romance... When she was young, spending time with the E’Clair family, colors were vibrant. Orange and yellow danced in blossoms in her vision when she spent time with Tasman; green and blue swirled like rippling water when she looked at Aylik. They were a trio of light, bouncing from place to place. It was the happiest she’d ever been, the closest she’d ever felt to belonging. But loss changes people. Everyone deals with grief differently and the day it landed on their roost was the day everything Taikatalvi knew changed.
Shaking her furry white head free of the disorienting rainbow that feathered at the edges of her vision, she turned her attention back to the mind numbing conversation at hand. She couldn’t remember the stranger’s name but she could remember the way Aylik’s nose scrunched up when he tasted something he didn’t like. She couldn’t pinpoint the conversation topic that droned on and on, but she knew exactly where to aim to send Aylik into a fit of giggles. At least, she did. The once carefree tom was somber now; she hardly recognized him, but she liked to think that if she looked hard enough into his eyes she could see a glimmer of him somewhere in there. She doubted he considered her in any form anymore; he hovered in her peripherals like a vulture, just waiting for her to make a mistake and take Tasman away from him. As if she was capable of such a thing.
She couldn’t think about it anymore. She needed an escape. Excusing herself, she stood and padded away from the area, heading towards the haunted brook. It was her haven; she needed its silence and isolation.
If it was an escape from Aylik that the feline wanted, she had unfortunately chosen a terrible place to make her haven. Beyond the brook stood an old twoleg's nest that Tasman had made the meeting place for the E'clairs. It was their own sort of safe haven, and given the friendship that had been shared between Tasman, Aylik, and Taikatalvi, it wasn't surprising, perhaps, that their minds drew them to this isolated place that had so many rumors surrounding it.
It had been long since the tom had carefree days and restful nights, his days and nights plagued by memories of the past he could never forget, no matter how much he tried. Sleep, deprivation, injury, duty, none of it stopped the endless swarm of past experiences from overwhelming him time and time again. In many ways, he almost seemed to make less memories as life went on, for the memories drowned out the present, leaving him with the past and the few things he could experience in the time between those memories that just seemed to loop endlessly.
He wasn't sure how long he stared at Taikatalvi when he saw her arrive at the brook, sitting way up high on a snow covered branch, gray and white pelt blending into the droll landscape as he watched for what seemed like an eternity, his mind flickering through each day, each laugh and smile they'd shared. He watched her grow up in a heartbeat, saw the death and grief that put them on opposite sides of a seemingly unbridgeable chasm. And yet, here they were, now, in the time when Tasman could use all the alliances she could get to place herself on the throne Kerrigan had occupied not long before.
Was it fate? Or a cruel twist of fate that Cauil would bring them together now, to rehash old memories endlessly and shatter his already broken soul once again? Aylik couldn't know the answer, and the tom found himself landing on the ground, striding towards her with an expression as warm as the icy river only paces away before the memories had even stopped flashing across his vision. "Taikatalvi. It's been awhile." He couldn't forget that name, that face, and as he spoke, time sped up, her youth turning into Kadethood, and eventually into the very cat who stood before him now, though so much had changed between them since they had spent carefree days playing in the sun.
She lifted her gaze from the gray waters, eyes roving over the tom’s form. While he was attacked with memories of their youth she found herself confronting emotions she had forgotten were as vibrant as they were with him. Her emotions were pastel in comparison to the saturation of what she felt when confronted with the vision of his gaze and voice. She hadn’t been faced with him in many moons... She clenched her jaw but smiled.
“Aylik,” she greeted softly, “yes, it has. Is the E’Clair family well?”
More than even her appearance, her words sent him reeling back into memories, and, almost inexplicably, Aylik visibly flinched in response, lost for another long few moments until he managed to drag himself back into the present. Only then, when he was able to stop himself from spiraling down into the past once more, was he able to loosen his body, releasing the tension beneath his long gray and white coat that he hadn't realized had been there at all.
There was a part of him, deep in his soul, that urged him to spill everything that had happened since they'd played their last game together, spent their last carefree day unaware of the tragedy that would befall them so soon after. Yet, the stronger part of him warned him against such actions. Not only was it not his place, but Tasman's, to choose who they would let would let in as allies, it was also that Aylik simply couldn't trust her, though that tiny portion of his mind called him delusional to think Taikatalvi would ever act out against them. They were mere strangers now, cats who had drifted apart with time, their youths spent and their futures murky at best.
"We are as well as we can be, as the prime suspects in Kerrigan's disappearance." That wasn't new information, though. They had always been seen as a threat, and now, the Harlow's had a reason to focus on them more than ever before. Of course, their paws were clean, but they had about a rat's chance in hell of actually convincing the royals otherwise. "And you?"
She swallowed inaudibly, processing his words. She’d regretted her question as soon as it had left her lips, remembering the traumatic past the remainder of the family shared, but that was her nature — she was impulsive and blunt. It was part of why she had gotten along with them so well when they were younger, she hadn’t felt the need or desire to lie and she wasn’t capable of manipulation. It seemed, though, that such traits were no longer looked upon as strengths but weaknesses. It gave her another reason to feel out of place in the social standing of BrookClan’s hierarchal pyramid; did she even belong with the lesser folk, those considered commoners in the eyes of the royals? She felt like an outcast, staying only because of her blind loyalty and the memories she held on to desperately.
“I’m sorry you’ve been swept into another conspiracy. It’s an awful way to live.” She knew this wasn’t the first time the E’Clair’s had been targeted. She wondered, deep down where the tinny voice of her innocence was pushed into a cage, if they felt as alone as she did. If they missed her. If he missed her. She knew he had made an impact on her that would never go away; his paw print left a crater in her heart that would never scar over. Judging by the tom’s expression... he didn’t feel the same. She tried to keep it from hurting her as much as it did. “I’m well. I spoke with Tasman recently.”
