Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He knew now he had always been dancing delicately around this issue, avoiding the rational voice of truth, lost in a sea of empty promises. He had wanted so much, but he had forgotten how to act for himself.
He had always been at her beck and call, her shoulder to cry on, but she had always left him for someone else.
Fine; he was done with that. Timesquandor was tired of waiting. If he had to let himself go to capture a sense of purpose in his life, he would. He just needed something different to awaken him once more. His auburn ears set forward, the tom swept his gaze over the cliffs, seeking out a new companion to explore with today. The neutral tom had been little more than acquaintances with his clan, and that was the first change he intended to make. He needed to learn how to find and be a friend.
Only a momentary rustle in the long grass announced the arrival of a massive brown tabby. The grass seemed to part before him, like water before a massive fish. The normally impressive tom held his head low, his shoulders slumped. His normally richly colored dark brown fur, seemed dull and listless. Even his golden eyes had seemed to pale as the stared firmly at the ground. He walked through the undergrowth, unaware the he had stumbled upon another member of his clan. He lumbered past, giving no indication or acknowledgment to the other tom.
A very odd move, for the normally cheerful tom Hiddencharm.
He didn't know Hiddencharm well. He rarely spoke to him at all, like most of the clan. Timesquandor was polite with his clanmates and made few enemies in their ranks, but he was a friend of few either. Dependable, but not exactly trusted, though most grudgingly respected him for avoiding trouble with other cats and keeping his nose out of their drama. Today, though, he was doing the opposite.
"Eyes up, Hiddencharm, or you'll run into someone. What's on your paws that holds your attention so greatly?" The auburn tom shifted to watch him go by, narrowing his ivy gaze slightly. It was unusual to see him so downcast, even he knew it, though he wasn't sure why. He didn't ask.
The sound of another cat's voice startled him. His eyes snapped upwards, wide and alert. Yet all they found was the form of his clan-mate Timesquandor. Sure he had seen the tom around, but he couldn't remember ever talking to the tom other than passing pleasantries. He blinked a few times, trying to clear his mind enough to form words."I uhm... well you see" he stammered.
He shook his head "Honestly, I just had other things on my mind" he finally managed to push out a recognizable sentence. He had been so lost in his thoughts, that he hadn't even realized that the other tom had been watching him.
"Actually, I don't see. Your paws look fine to me." His voice was light, but it was a little strained as well; he wasn't really sure how to make a joke, but he was trying something new. His head cocked as the other tom went on, and then he nodded once, understanding. He understood getting lost in though all too well. The middle son, he often found himself forgotten and dwelling alone with only his thoughts to keep his attention. Though, maybe that wasn't because of his birth order at all: maybe he'd just never been that interested in interacting with other cats, and he'd forgotten.
Timesquandor sighed. He shifted his stand to look the tom up and down, and then shook his head. "Look, Hiddencharm.... I'll tel you right now, thinking it over won't help you any. You have to find something else to do, and while you're distracted the answer will come to you. Sitting here will just make you confused."
Hiddencharm blinked, unsure if Timesquandor was serious, or trying to make a joke about the situation. Either way, he seemed a little awkward. He smiled, what the other cat said was true, but that didn't make it any easier. What was on his mind, was not something that could easily be placed aside. No matter where he went, or what he was doing he like there was a hollow emptiness within him.
But a distraction would be a welcome relief from the swirls of emotions within. It wouldn't make the pain go away, but perhaps it would ease the sting. "And what would suggest that I distract myself with?" he asked.
The auburn tom considered a moment. "Well, I've been talking to cats, and I heard some rumors. I haven't had time to check them out yet, see if they're worth the work, but they sound promising enough. There's an old twoleg structure, not too far off the border, you might've seen it if you wandered that way some. Heard a couple of rogues holed up there for a couple of days and there were enough mice to give the entire clan a good meal, and easy hunting too. Could be worth checking out, but we might have to deal with some angry rogues if they're still living nearby."
Since the Sun God wasn't too concerned about borders, he had started to keep his ears open a bit more - and there was some tantalizing information to be found. A den full of mice was a hard offer to pass on; even if they only took a few and left the rest to reproduce, they could have the clan happy and well fed. If the hunting was as good as they claimed, there might be some unfriendly cats hanging about that wanted to fight them over it, but he could always use a good fight to get his blood pumping. He wasn't too worried about them being stronger than the pair of clan cats.
Hiddencharm laughed at the thought of the angry rouges coming back only to find their stash of mice missing. "Now that is more like it. Action, hunting, adventure, I AM IN"
He wasn't normally one for violence, but perhaps a good fight would help him release the stress that had been building up within him. It also would be a good way to make up for all the hunting patrols that he had been skipping out on lately.
"Well lead the way!" He added a little more cheerfully. He could still feel the darkeness within him, but the tom's promise helped him push it to the back of his mind.
Timesquandor smiled. "Excellent." They would still have to be stealthy once they got close and check it out before they rushed in, in case there were far more rogues than he anticipated, but at least now he had some backup. It would do some good to bond with one of his clanmates, and they'd both feel far more useful if they walked in with jaws full of prey. He could already taste them, and picture the approving looks the other cats would give them. Timesquandor didn't work for the approval of other cats... but it didn't hurt to get, either.
The auburn tom turned and thought for a moment, then strode purposefully toward the border. "It won't be too far of a walk once we get past the border. It was built in the valley, so if we stick close to the camouflage near the top, the sun could blind any scouts they have and keep us hidden," he mused. It wasn't ideal, but other than a few low bushes and yucca, it was rather exposed and they had few options if they wanted to stay hidden.
"I'm surprised that none of our clan-mates have dealt with them yet honestly" it was very common for SunClan cats to stray from their lands, and not many in the clan would think twice about attacking a few rogues. Especially if they were guarding a potentially valuable resource such as this.
Hiddencharm was able to easily keep up with the other tom, but he didn't like feeling so exposed. There was little cover, and those within would be able to see their approach. "Yes, some cover is better than none. I'm excited to see what we might find"
A little shiver made it's way down his spine in anticipation
"They must have seen the rogues without the prey, and assumed it wasn't worth the time," he suggested mildly. In truth, he might have been a little misleading about the number of rogues in the area. There were more than one cat could handle, and even two was fairly dubious. If their plan went right, they wouldn't have to fight much, but he had wanted a second set of claws just in case it did come down to blows. Rogues valued their lives and since most did not have a healer available, they'd run sooner than a clan cat would, but sheer numbers would give them enough confidence to trouble the pair. The trick, then, would be taking some out when they alone, before the group was made aware of the two warriors.
"If everything goes as it should, we'll have a good stash of prey to bring back," Timesquandor agreed. He was eager to get started as well. "If there's enough, we can bring someone else with us another day to finish cleaning the place out." He preferred to leave some prey alive to reproduce and only take what they needed, but after a few days it wouldn't hurt to grab some more. They couldn't hunt everything today because there were only a few to carry it, and the fresh-kill would rot if it went uneaten for too long, but they could catch a sizable feast.
