Bonefang walked with Lionesspaw not knowing about the dangerous stalker until it was too late. A gray fox leaped from the tall grass and landed barely three fox lengths in front of the clan cats. Bonefang dropped his catch and bared his fangs. "It wants our rabbits, I think," he said to the apprentice through his clenched teeth. The fox drew back it's lips in a fierce growl but what Bonefang noticed was it's gaunt belly. "A starving fox is more dangerous than most," he warned Lionesspaw. "Be careful."
Lionesspaw placed her prey behind her and bared her teeth at the fox, letting out a warning growl. "I understand." She replied through her clenched teeth. "But because of it's hungry state, it should be too weak to run far, right?" She asked keeping her gaze on the fox.

"Yes and also it makes them more unpredictable and vicious," he growled but not at Lionesspaw. His eyes never left the hungry fox. Bonefang then launched his body at the fox with his claws extended and fangs bared. He landed a few good scratches on the fox's side before it dodged and charged at Lionesspaw.

The fox screeched in pain at the tormentor on his back. He threw himself on the ground and rolled over in an attempt to dislodge the young cat. Bonefang lunged in and scratched at his face.
Lionesspaw leaped away as the fox rolled over, nearly being squished by the fox. She got up and lunged at it's hing leg, biting down hard, feeling the bone and blood fill her mouth.

The fox yowled from the pain in his leg then he swatted at Bonefang, causing the tom to lose his balance and fall on his side. At the same time, the fox pulled his leg from Lionesspaw's bite, enduring the additional pain it caused. He didn't want to fight the cats anymore, it was only his growling stomach that drove him on. But suddenly he saw a solution. He darted over to where the rabbits laid and grabbed the one Lionesspaw had caught. Without a backward glance, the fox took off running back across the meadow. "HEY!" Bonefang yowled as he scrambled to his paws.
Lionessspaw let out a hiss, and slashed her claws at the fox as it lunged fro her prey and took off. She stood with her ears against her head and tail lashing angrily. "Mousedung!" She whispered under her breath. Before walking towards Bonefang. " You ok?" She asked the tom.

Bonefang felt a burning in his side and looked at some nasty scratches but they were not too deep, just annoying. "I'll live," he sighed as he lost sight of the fleeing fox. "I only regret not killing it. Now it'll stay around here hunting our prey." He looked back at Lionesspaw. "So how did you fare? Any bad wounds?"

Bonefang examined the apprentice's leg and saw she was right. "Good," he commented. "That could've gone a lot worse. Foxes are known to cause serious injuries or even kill cats." He walked over and stood above the remaining rabbit. "Let's get this back to camp and report what happened. Maybe a patrol will be sent out to take care of that fox."
"Ok." She replied as rose to her paws. "I agree, it could have injured my leg way worse, even breaking it. I already have a limp, I don't need any of my paws being broken." She replied before grabbing the rabbit that remained.

"It's a good thing it didn't" Bonefang agreed. He was pleased to see she was still willing to help by carrying the rabbit even though she was injured. "We'll pass through the oak grove on the way back to camp. Maybe we'll find a squirrel or two gathering nuts for the winter."

Bonefang watched Lionesspaw to make sure she didn't limp too much. As they came to the oak grove, he took the lead. It bothered him that they lost half of their catch so he was determined to bring more back to camp. Moving carefully, his ears twitched at a soft crunching sound that came from somewhere up ahead. "Wait here with the rabbit. I'm going to go see what's making that noise."
Lionesspaw limped slightly as she continued to carry the rabbit. Sure it was almost too heavy for her with her hurt leg, but she put on a brave face and continued on through the pain, following Bonefang towards the Oak Grove. When he stopped , she stopped right beside him, glad to take a break, even a short one. She nodded her head to the older cat and sat down to watch the rabbit , so it wouldn't get stolen and leave them empty pawed.

Leaving the apprentice with their only remaining catch, Bonefang moved cautiously toward the sound of rustling leaves. It wasn't long until he saw a squirrel busily gathering acorns for the winter. Carefully he moved closer until he was able to make the catch. The squirrel was a large one but not as big as the rabbit they had lost. He brought it back to where Lionesspaw was waiting. "Why don't you take the squirrel," he suggested. "It's lighter to carry than the rabbit."

Concern registered instantly in Bonefang's eyes. "Are you feeling alright?" he asked. "Maybe we should rest here awhile." Any kit in SummerClan knew that a squirrel was a squirrel and not a mouse. "Were you hit in the head?" Then pointing to the squirrel he said, "This is a squirrel, not a mouse."
