Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Eternalstar's tail flicked idly from side to side as she considered her options. Her talk with Fawnheart hadn't gone well, the medicine cat not easily swayed to her way of thinking. For her plans to move forward though she needed some form of support from the medicine cat, couldn't have Fawnheart coddling the next generation and ruining them as well.
As her mismatched gaze turned to watch the medicine cat den a figurative lightbulb went off in her head, the leader watching Whitepaw slip free from it's confines. She knew of his kitty-pet past, she knew of his fathers refusal to acknowledge him as his son, and she knew some of their own doubted his position among them. He was perfect.
Pushing to her paws she moved towards the medicine cat apprentice, he was cute with his bob tail and slim build. Would never be a fighter from what she could tell unless he could earn to utilize his smaller size like she did, but she supposed he wouldn't have to; not as the medicine cat. But she still wondered if it was a point she could exploit. "Whitepaw!" She called joyfully, eyes sparkling with happiness as she trotted the rest of the way over to him. "I hope I'm not bothering you? I just wanted to check on you and make sure you've been doing alright?"
He stepped out from the den with his mouth moving along to near-silent words, quietly running through the herbs he was slowly starting to grow familiar with. He paused long enough to shake out his fur, certain the dusty feel of old herbs caught in his pelt would never go away. Whitepaw couldn't complain, though. It was all worth the life he led now, infinitely more fulfilling the life he would've led if his mother never led him here.
One black ear twitched automatically at his name being called, but the young tom didn't quite react until he caught the she-cat trotting up to him from the corner of his eye. His distant gaze focused on her as he meowed a low, "Oh, hi, Eternalstar." One paw lifted to absently straighten his whiskers as he replied, "Oh, no, you're not bothering me at all." He couldn't help but match the light in her eyes with a bright smile when he went on. "I just finished helping out Fawnheart, so I'm pretty free for now." Sure, Whitepaw loved training and working with the medicine cat, but he was pretty sure he'd be smelling herbs for moons wherever he went.
The apprentice's head tipped a bit to the side as he responded to Eternalstar's question with one of his own. "Is there something specific you wanted to check on? Or are you just doing leader stuff?" The bobtail assumed the latter. It made sense for a leader to check up on their Clanmates often, especially if that Clanmate was a medicine cat. Leaders and medicine cats were supposed to work pretty closely together after all. At least, as far as he knew they were.
She let out a light huff of laughter, "leader stuff you say," shaking her head she gave him an amused glance. "I suppose you could call it that if we would like to simplify it. But let us not discredit you that much. I can check on you because I like you and not just because I'm your leader." Eternalstar glanced over her shoulder before looking back towards him. "Would you like to take a walk with me? Sometimes I like to escape that 'leader stuff' and pretend I'm just a regular cat. I was hoping you would indulge me?"
He only gave a small shrug at the answer he got to his question. He didn't really expect 'because I like you' to be the reason she'd talk to him. Weren't leaders supposed to be really busy all the time? Maybe not. He was only an apprentice. Surprise flashed in his eyes at the offer for a walk, but he had no complaints about it. Curiosity, for the chance to get to know the Clan's new leader, was part of what drove him. He gave a small nod, saying, "Sure. Maybe I can shake off the smell of old herbs outside of camp." His whiskers twitched with amusement at his response, the young tom finding his little joke pretty funny.
"How is learning the herbs going? Well I hope?" She chuckled towards the end to show the statement was meant slightly in jest. The leader truly unconcerned with the rate Whitepaw learned his herbs, trusting that he would slowly come to know all he had too. The small she-cat lead them from camp and out into the territory, steps slow as she took a moment to simply breath, visibly enjoying being out, free, in the territory. "I know things have been... difficult and times unsure. I hope it's not affecting your training to negatively."
The chuckle following Eternalstar's questions were met, at first, with a slightly nervous laugh from Whitepaw. "It's going well now," he replied, shaking his head slightly as he added, "The whole situation with SunClan put me pretty far behind, though." Another short laugh came from the tom, this one an attempt for it to sound more genuine, before he shook out his soft pelt to brush away his thoughts. The delay to his training didn't matter that much. He was learning now, even if sometimes the amount of herbs he needed to learn seemed all but impossible for one cat to know. His own pawsteps slowed automatically, mismatched eyes automatically scanning the undergrowth for herbs he recognized before his gaze drifted skyward to focus on nothing in particular. One ear turned towards the leader as she spoke up again, though his focus didn't follow as he told her, "I wasn't able to do much training while we were SunClan and them's captives, but Fawnheart has been working hard to help me catch up."
"Of-course she has." Eternalstar agreed, though if once carefully listened there was a mocking undertone, almost as if the she-cat was resisting the urge to roll her eyes. "Which is why I think it might be fair for me to warn you that I shall be sending her to Fallclan to help train their medicine cat." Her tail flicked as she debated extending the next offer but knew she had to at-least give an illusion of choice. No matter how much she would prefer to maneuver him firmly into her corner. "If you'd like you can follow her, or you can stay here in our territory and just make a trip over their for a daily lesson?" Her mind turned over how she would also sending Hystericplauge over to the Regime for lessons with their medicine cat equivalent at the same time.
Unfortunately for Whitepaw, and very likely fortunately for Eternalstar, the tom was rather oblivious despite his intelligence. He gave a small nod of his head at her words, a faint smile starting to show. Despite the delay, he really liked Fawnheart as a mentor. She was doing everything in her power to make up for the delay SunClan caused and she was nice enough while doing it. The smile dropped quickly, though, an expression bordering on shock taking its place as he looked towards the leader. Wait, Fawnheart was going to FallClan? She couldn't do that. He still felt moons away from being even half-trained as medicine cat. "Why are you doing that?" he squeaked out in a surprised voice, only just above a whisper. Couldn't there be some other cat that could help mentor whoever in FallClan? Fawnheart already had an apprentice she was busy training. Him. He didn't want to question the decisions of the leader - didn't the code say her words was law or something like that? - but he didn't feel at all ready to take over his mentor's position, even temporarily.
His mental focus quickly shifted at the question Eternalstar posed to him. He couldn't help but feel a little trapped with the offer, even as he reasoned he was probably just being ridiculous. Even hardly a quarter trained, Whitepaw felt almost immediately that he couldn't take the former option. He would much prefer, for himself, to follow Fawnheart to FallClan. Then he wouldn't need to take any responsibility he wasn't prepared for and could continue his own training alongside the medicine cat in FallClan. But... Most of the reasoning came from a sense of obligation to SpringClan. If he went, then the Clan would have no one to act as medicine cat. Surely even he would be better than nobody. And he could still get training with the latter option. He couldn't deny, however, that part of what drove his first instinct was fear. He could only imagine what his father might think, and other cats who shared the older tom's opinion. Would they even want him back after FallClan's medicine cat was trained if he was so willing to run away from the responsibility he chose? He was quiet for several moments before he eventually said, "I'd rather stay here. SpringClan's my home, and I can still learn to be a medicine cat while staying where I belong." The words felt a little odd in his mouth as he realized they were more words his father would probably like to hear than how he actually felt. Eternalstar didn't need to know that, though.
Eternalstar let a pleased smile curve across her lips, though she tried to curb the sharp edge of it. "I'm glad to hear that Whitepaw." She purred softly, though held off from going as far as saying 'you made the right choice'. She wanted Whitepaw to feel like he was still making his own decisions. "I have another cat being trained in basic herbs so he'll be around to help while you're off taking lessons with Fawnheart." She paused and tilted her head suddenly, eyes going distant as she realized a rather important thing. She had yet to inform Fawnheart that she would be sending her off; oh well she would do it later.
"Now that we have business out of the way lets move on to lighter topics, I'm sure you could use something to distress you. It really wasn't my intention to bring this up and lower the mood so much." Her tone regretful, as she rolled her shoulders, the picture of apology. "Tell me Whitepaw, what do you normally do for fun?"
A slightly nervous smile crossed his muzzle for just a moment at her response. Quietly he hoped he'd be able to handle being the Clan's medicine cat without Fawnheart. He thought it'd be a long time before he had to take over any major duties, and even then it'd be with Fawnheart still able to help him with any mistakes or gaps in knowledge. He couldn't back down, though, especially now that he had told Eternalstar that he'd stay. When she mentioned another cat that would be around to help, though, he gave a sigh of relief. At least he wouldn't be alone in taking care of the Clan. He opened his mouth to ask who this other cat was, but after a moment shut it again without a word. He could find out later. Especially once Eternalstar continued on while trying to change the subject.
"Oh, it's no problem," he meowed, a more sincere smile accompanying his words. "It's better than keeping me in the dark, right?" No matter the tension that built up at the news Eternalstar gave him, he'd much rather deal with it now as opposed to having to deal with it after Fawnheart was gone. "What I do for fun, huh?" he echoed, mismatched eyes wandering as he thought. "Oh, well, uh..." After a moment he began to stare rather intently at a stone a tail-length away, as though an answer was on its surface. What did he do for fun? "I dunno really. I pretty much spend all day trying to catch up on my training." And beyond his training, he never really got into games with his denmates as a kit so he didn't have any of that to fall back onto in whatever free time he might get.
"Well that's just shameful really." Eternalstar observed, turning to blink towards the medicine cat apprentice when he admitted to no hobbies. Even she had hobbies when she was younger, had hobbies even now as leader. Sure they included manipulated others and playing with them, included games that used other cats as the pieces; but they were hobbies all the same. "Well it's decided then. We'll have to find you some hobbies today. I'm sure Fawnheart can manage on her own while you and I go out and try to find things you enjoy."
She wondered what a medicine cat apprentice might even do as a hobby, something simple in case they had to leave it quickly. Something relaxing to help deal with the stress of their profession. "Though I must admit, I have very little idea on how to even start with such a task. Worst comes to worst your hobby can be hanging out with others alright." She purred encouragingly. The picture of supportive new friend.
