brackenleafvexing_ode @ian goldcrest (i'm tagging everyone who showed the slightest hint of wanting to join the murder club but I prob missed a few ♥ but they should all meet!!!! all kits and apprentices welcome!!!! we're taking over the apprentices den!!!!)
They were only days away from being promoted to apprentices, but Midnightkit was already impatient. It had felt like too long, there were so many kits in the nursery now that she was practically the oldest of the bunch. For a kit, she was more irritable than anything else, totally unlike the giddy younger ones who constantly were underfoot these days. Perhaps she'd have been the same as the others, but Midnightkit had never really understood the others, and as she grew, she couldn't understand Sunrisekit either. The other cat seemed to grow normally, adjusting into her place with the other kits, and here she was, still hiding to the side, always sticking to her dad's side ever since their mother and sisters passed away.
Curled up to the side of the den, she was trying to take a nap, when out of the corner of her eye, she spotted her sister. Identical in looks and completely opposite in nature, she groaned internally; what was the other cat up to this time?
"Gooooooood morning!" she meowed with a cavalier smile as her sister looked in her direction. If Midnightkit was grumpy and sometimes borderline antisocial, her sister was the complete opposite. Unless another kit annoyed her - which, honestly, wasn't that hard - she was just as sunshine-y as her name suggested. Where her sister stayed glued to Devotedcrow, she made every effort to mill around with the other kits, offering bright smiles and a level of charisma that was strange for such a young cat. She had most, but not all, of SummerClan wrapped around her little finger, and she knew it. After all, what was there not to like about a bubbly, friendly kitten who may or may not think she was a god amongst mortals?
"I'm so glad you're up, Middie. The plan just would not have worked the same way if you weren't going to join us! Come on, don't be slow, we've got things to do!" she purred, offering her sister a wink. Generally, Midnightkit seemed to hate almost every grand plan that Sunrisekit had, and she was almost certain that this wouldn't be any different. "And anyone else who wants to have a little fun, come on over too!" she then announced, glancing around to see what other kittens were in the nursery at the time.
In a similar vain to Midnightkit, Monsterkit was was the irritable type, but where she was quieter, less social, he was loud, perpetually angry and defensive. He didn't understand anyone else, either, but he also didn't feel the need to — as far as he was aware, they were all as equally annoying. He didn't care to make friends, he would tell himself.
He was snoring, rather loudly, curled up in his little makeshift nest in the back of the nursery (he built it himself, he was quite proud of it), when — Gooooooood morning! His eyes snapped open. Peeking up from where his nose was tucked under his forearm, he spotted Sunrisekit. He glared at her, intent on ignoring both her and her sister.
"What plan?" He blurted, sitting up sharply. "What fun?"

Buffalokit lifted his head moss clinging to an ear. He gave a big stretch and glanced over to see midnightkit, already awake, he went to greet her when her twin began to speak.
"Fun?" He mewed, slightly tired but slowly waking up. the white and brown kit looked at midnightkit, there was a hint of sympathy in his eyes, but also encouragement. "it sounds like fun!" he was just as friendly as Sunrisekit, but definitely more chilled out and mellow.
Her head snapped into the tom's direction, and she squinted her eyes. "Oh, I guess I should have been more specific. Anyone but you," she meowed with a dismissive roll of her eyes. He had gotten into her way precisely once, and she would never forgive him. That part was also pretty sure that he was going to come with her anyways, just to get under her skin again. Especially now that Sunrisekkt said she didn't want him around. She frowned slightly at the realization; why couldn't he have just stayed asleep?
She turned back to the others, the smile returning to her face. "Yes, tons of fun!" she assured him. "I was just thinking, the den is getting pretty tight, with all the orphans that have-" Sunrisekkt's voice trailed off as she realized who she was talking to, and that what she was going to say might read as a little offensive. "-come to be our friends." She was totally not going to say that all of the random kits smelled and took up all of the room in the den, (just before the sudden boom of kittens, it had only been family in the den. Auntie Rosethorn had been the only other queen, and there had been no other kits. She liked it back then. Not only did she not have to trip over kittens bodies nearly every morning to get out of the den, but it was easier to get all of the attention when there weren't sixty five other bodies in the nursery). Of course she wasn't. Her left eye twitched slightly, before she sighed, recentering herself. "What I'm trying to say is, we've gotten a little cramped in here, and Middie and I are ready to be apprentices! They just won't promote us yet!" She let out a defiant huff, her lips pulling into a grin. "So, to show them that we deserve to be in there, we're going to hold a protest. All of us, a sit in, the apprentice den, it'll be totally cool, yeah?"

Across the camp, Brackenpaw lay curled up in his nest in the apprentices' den, methodically grooming his short sandy brown pelt. He'd been out late on the midnight patrol the night before and his mentor had told him when they got in the night before that he could take the morning off. He felt like he'd had enough sleep, but couldn't be bothered to leave his nest until they went hunting later. And it was such a luxury to finally have a quiet den. He'd only been an apprentice for half a moon, so until then he'd been in the ridiculously overcrowded nursery with all the nursing queens and their kits and the other orphans. He sighed contentedly as he finished the last patch of his pelt and let his tail drape over his nose as his breathing slowed peacefully.
Midnight too had a distaste for Monsterkit, but now that Buffalokit was also awake, she supposed that meant the plan was going to go forward no matter what. She was grateful that her cousins weren't around–they were always more rowdy when together, but frankly, Sunrisekit was more than enough.
"Do we really have to invade the apprentice's den?" she whined, glancing towards the other space, not so far away. If she was honest with herself, she did want to move over there. It was crowded and stinky and the queens always yelled at them to be quiet because the youngest ones were sleeping but frankly, she wanted to do so just to escape all of this noise.
She knew there was no swaying Sunrisekit. She sighed. "Okay, but if we get in trouble and we get promoted later, I'm blaming you," she gave her sister a pointed look.
Marigoldkit had poked his little orange-cream head up from his place inside his nest. He'd been awake the entire time, but up until that point, he'd been content to ignore what was going on. He normally always was, busy doing anything but being a part of the action. But hearing Monsterkit's voice rise up and then Sunrisekit's snap back had been enough to draw his attention, him amber gaze throwing a sympathetic glance -- well, not quite at Monsterkit, but certainly in his vicinity. It all seemed very cruel to him -- even if Monsterkit had, from what he had heard, slightly harassed Sunrisekit before -- and it didn't help the way she continued to talk didn't endear her much more to him. If he had been a bolder cat, a more outspoken cat, he might have called her out on what she'd done there, with that little "orphans" comment, but he wasn't; he had never been and it was safe to say he would never be the type to stir up trouble like that.
Instead, he just sank uncomfortably lower into his nest, as if he had his attention drawn at all. The entire thing sounded like trouble, and he was terrified of getting in trouble. But equally, it sounded like everyone else was going to cause trouble, and now he was anxious about everyone else getting in trouble too -- he didn't want half the entire nursery-worth of kits to be getting in trouble. Though it wasn't as if he could have prevented it even if he spoke up, it wasn't as if anyone would even listen to him; not that he even went as far as to consider speaking up at all. Instead he just watched, head gently resting on the inner-most rim of the moss that made up his nest, observing the entire scene with round, pathetically anxious eyes like he had resolved himself to watching a train-wreck in the making.
I was just thinking, the den is getting pretty tight, with all the orphans that have — come to be our friends. Monsterkit only glared at her, about to shoot something snarky in her direction — 'I'm not your friend,' or something, even though the fact was entirely obvious with the way they constantly seemed on the edge of a fight. Monsterkit was just as petty as she was, if not more, and his grudges could last lifetimes. But, even with his utter hatred of her, he found himself intrigued by her plan. He sniffed, "I guess I can join you. I should have already been promoted anyway due to pure awesomeness." He was also around the same age as them anyway. Besides, staying in the apprentices' den was, like, what to cool older kids did, and he was a cool older kid.
"I really don't think you guys should be making invasion plans when an adult is in the room." From the same nest as Marigoldkit, still half-asleep, Shadedsun spoke up, though his tone wasn't chastising, instead it carried humour. With his sheer size and intense fluff, he surely didn't help with the crowded feeling the nursery had taken on. "But I'm asleep. . . so."
Curled up and half-absorbed in his neck fur, Petuniakit peered towards the older kits, still young and small herself, piped up quietly, "you guys's are going to get in trouble doin' that." She, however, did seem chiding.

Buffalokit awkwardly flicked his gaze back and forth between wickedkit and sunrisekit, he was one of these so called orphans, but gave a shrug he was quite old now and was most certainly outgrowing the nursery. He shrugged off the potential insults, it was true anyway, and rose to his paws giving a big stretch. "It will be alright, we won't be doing any harm just hanging about." Buffalokit teased gently giving midnightkit a bat with his paw. "Right?" He glanced back to sunrisekit suddenly unsure, maybe she did plan do do something other than just invade the space. He hoped not.
im barging in, kings queens and twunks <3 i literally forgot i had a sumc kit i was like aw man i wish i could join AND THEN
“Well, I think,” Peonykit spoke up, lightly, blamelessly, sweetly superior from where she was miming painting Shadedsun’s front claws, because she didn’t have the means but she had the will, “you’re all being perfectly stupid.” She didn’t look up as she said it, her head tilted as she gazed serenely down at her grandfather’s claws, brushing over them again and again with a soft feather that she was pretending was coated in pink paint. Pink was his favourite.
Then she turned her head and looked at them all with a smile, un-intimidated by so many faces, by such a large number of older kits. “And I think,” she batted her lashes calmly, “you’re all going to get caught. And so, I think none of you are thinking big enough.” She went back to brushing the feather over Shadedsun’s claws, looking down and tilting her head again. After a few moments of silence, she added, like it were the most obvious thing in the world, “you should barricade the apprentice’s den when you’re all in there. So they can’t get you out. And if they want to get you out, they have to do what you want.” She smiled and turned her head again to look at them. She always got what she wanted. “Shh-shh-shh,” she added to Shadedsun, brushing her paw over and over again over his eyelids like she thought she had some witchcraft that would make him fall asleep properly, unable to hear them plot. He might not stop the other kits, but he was always awfully protective of them. Then, reaching out, she tickled her feather over her brother and sister’s noses with a smile.
As if deciding once and for all that she was coming along, without any invitation from the other kits, she padded over to Midnightkit and smiled at her for a moment — then brushed the feather over her nose as well. “Did you know you’re a little bit ugly? I really don’t like your fur at all.” She looked away, walked over to Sunrisekit and gave her the same smile. “And I don’t really think you’re as good as you think you are.” She reached out and brushed her nose with the feather. “Boop,” she told her softly, smiling. She didn’t like being called an orphan. Their mother was coming back. She hadn’t left them. Bitter anger fluttered in her chest, so gentle and flowery and unstably, quiveringly repressed. Then, dragging her eyes away, she smiled around at all of them. “So. When do we leave? Now?” She twirled her feather between her little claws, in the centre of the nursery and stubbornly, sweetly glad to be there. She tilted her head, still smiling. Her eyes scrunched up at the bottom very pointedly. Viciously. It was clear they weren’t getting rid of her. It was also clear, despite never having met him, that she was every bit Doefreckle’s granddaughter.

Midnightkit sighed as Buffalokit tried to reassure her. "Yeah I guess so," she replied reluctantly, when Peonykit seemed to march right in. Her eyes narrowed at the other kit. The flower kits, right. Newest addition to the nursery and possibly the most annoying ones, she thought almost immediately; who did they think they were, marching around as if they owned the place? "You're literally the youngest one," she replied pointedly at Peonykit, "literally no one asked for your opinion–"
Then suddenly she was talking about making a plan, and then insulting her? Her teeth gritted in anger as she stood up, almost ready to fight the other kit, her little claws clicking under her paws. "Why I oughtta–"
At first there had been a small, tumultuous moment of relief for Marigoldkit as Shadedsun had spoken up. It was the gentle sense that, even though everyone in the nursery here thought they were being big, scary, important, causing some sort of trouble and ruckus, it wasn't as out of control as they all thought it was. Shadedsun was still here, an adult was still present — if it really was all so bad, then he wouldn't have just talked about it so dismissively, would he? It was only aided by the fact Petuniakit had said exactly what Marigoldkit would have said, if he could have found the voice to speak in opposition to this entire, unfathomably ridiculous plan.
But then, that small sense of peace, that gentle eagerness to believe all was well again that might have had him cuddling up closer to Shadedsun and falling back asleep, or just quietly daydreaming by the comfort of his presence, was broken the moment his other sister spoke up. There was a franticness in the way he looked at her, that anxious, pleading look that was just begging her, "Please, please don't make a scene!" with big, amber eyes, but she continued. Against every iota of hope and silent, unanswered prayers that in that one fleeting moment made him convinced there was no Starclan or caring entity in the universe, she continued. Her feather trailed over his nose briefly and he sneezed, a sneeze that sounded more akin to a whimper. It was a pitiful thing, but clearly it did nothing to deter his sister who, before he knew it, had jumped right out of the nest and had padded right over to where the other kits were gathered while he stayed, still as a rock, still as jarring, warm summer air, uncomfortable and uneasy and forced to just stir in it. Every word Peonykit said was like a small stab into him, and he was forced to just sit there as pangs after pang of second-hand shame and embaressment struck him, slowly mixing in with a pale wash of horror of what was going to happen next as an obvious repercussion for every word she said.
And then of course, of course, that brazenness came back to bite her. If he had been another cat, a more cold, unflappable cat, he might have just put a paw to his temple and rubbed at it, might have moaned out a "Good grief." because the whole thing was so obvious, so inevitable, while being so equally preventable, that it was near migraine inducing. But he wasn't unshakable; he was emotional, and caring, and terrified at the mere thought of Midnightkit — who, being nearly large enough to be an apprentice, looked more menacing than she perhaps ought to have when looming over Peonykit, who was probably one of the smallest bundles of kitten fluff in the entire nursery — even laying a paw on his sibling. In a panic, he started yanking at Shadedsun's fur, a desperate plea to get his attention at something he knew the warrior couldn't see, but wished with ever fiber of his being he could nevertheless. "Grandpa!" His tiny maw released Shadedsun's fur only long enough to let out the little wail, which was half to get his attention, but half as a frantic attempt to make Midnightkit remember that there was an adult right there, enough to make her pause and realize anything she might want to do wouldn't be worth it. He made another sharp tug on Shadedsun's neck fur, trying to drag his head towards where the two she kits were; his gaze only briefly making attempt to lock eyes on Midnightkit, as if to silently beg her not to move a step forward, to reconsider, like it was a silent apology even while he was second away from essentially tattletaling on her for even moving threateningly towards his sister. As if without words, he could tacitly say a "I'm sorry, she doesn't know what she's saying! She didn't mean it!"; perhaps in his panic nothing but fear actually showed through, but he was just trying eagerly to de-escelate tensions as quickly as possible.
As Peonykit insulted the sisters, so sweetly, so poisonously, Monsterkit stood back, mouth slightly hanging open, enough to see the white glimmer of his teeth. He was almost shocked, but it was the most hysterical thing in the world, and as Midnightkit reacted, unsheathing her claws, he burst out laughing and snorting, nearly falling over. "She got you, she got you!" He cackled, shimmying closer to witness her absolutely beat the hell out of Peonykit, probably. His eyes were wide and alight, the fight exciting him.
Grandpa! As Monsterkit snapped his head towards the interruption, rolling his eyes at Marigoldkit tugging on his grandfather's fur, Shadedsun blinked open his eyes. "Hm?" His ears flicked, and though he couldn't see the scene before him, the tension was heavy. He pulled Marigoldkit not only away from the grip he had on his fur, but towards him as well with a large, gentle paw, almost protectively, head still resting on side of the moss nest, making enough room for Petuniakit to still hide in his chest fur. "Is something wrong?"
It was Petuniakit that spoke up. "Midnightkit wants to kill Peonykit! She wants to end her life! She's —" a gasp broke her sentence, soft and fearful, and she ducked her head lower. Shadedsun gave a confused, slightly doubtful look — a kitten scrap, they weren't uncommon and certainly not dangerous at all, though he did worry exponentially for his grandchildren. "Alright, alright," he spoke louder as to draw their attention, "there's no fighting, if you're going to take over the apprentices' den, you've got to work as a team or else it's all going to fall apart." He spoke as if he had experience.
Sunrisekit watched her sister, her lips twitching in delight, absolute glee. She would have been absolutely thrilled to watch her sister pummel the stupid no good orphan. She probably would have joined in, had Marigoldkit and Petuniakit not piped in. "Look, brats. What we're not going to do is cry and tattle to the adults. That's what babies do. You're dumb stupid babies," she retorted with a hiss. "Only dumb stupid babies want to play with the big dogs until they get their feelings hurt or they have to face consequences for their actions." How was it possible that Monsterkit wasn't the kit that Sunrisekit hated the most in this den right now? She then tore her hateful gaze off the kittens and softened it, looking up at Shadedsun with big, innocent eyes. "I'm sorry they woke you up, Shadedsun, sir. We were trying to keep it down, promise." She offered him her signature smile, big and beaming. "We'll just be off now. Thanks for your advice!" she purred, her tail running across her sister's spine. She then let her gaze shift back to the youngest kittens, her smile not leaving her face. She leaned in real close to the three of them, close enough that she hoped that only they'd be able to hear her next words. "We don't want to be on your smelly team anyways. Consider yourself un-invited too," she whispered.
She offered the trio a wink, before motioning her sister to follow. "Come on, Middie. The big kids have things to do. Monsterkit, tag in, chop chop, we ain't got all day" she muttered begrudgingly, her stomach churning slightly in disgust as she once again invited her sworn mortal enemy to join. "Buffalokit, you too," she then meowed, her voice bright again as soon as she wasn't talking to him. She let out an excited little hum, before skipping off to the entrance of the den. "Let's go!"
if she's throwing a temper tantrum because they tattled i can only imagine how big of a tantrum she's going to throw when the youngins end up coming with them too why is she being angelica from the rugrats

Midnightkit, as irritable and angry as she was, did not like getting into trouble. Her ear flicked in annoyance as the little babies began to tattle tale on her and gods, she couldn't wait until she was out of the nursery honestly. Were all kits this annoying? Surely her cousins hadn't been this irritating when she was growing up either. Her claws were dug into the earth as she gritted her teeth, standing there for a moment to still herself, before scowling at Peonykit. Stupid brat was lucky there were others around, she thought.
"I hope you get fleas in your pelt," she scowled, "and if you don't, I'll make sure you do." It wasn't enough to pray for Peonykit's downfall, she had to actively participate in it. With a skeptical glance at Monsterkit, she supposed Sunrise knew what she was doing anyway. A sigh left her mouth, before she turned to Buffalokit. "Come on Buffy," she was calm again, at least in the other tom's presence, "let's go. Better than staying around and hanging with these brats anyway."
As Midnightkit glared down at her, Peonykit glared right back, leaning up and straining on her tiptoes so she could get as close to the other she-kit's face as possible, quivering with rage. When everyone else intervened — her brother's hysteria, her sister's dobbing to Shadedsun, her grandfather's reasoned, calming advice (which only made her tremble with even more anger, because now she looked bad in front of him, her favourite cat in the world aside from her mother, all because of Midnightkit), Monsterkit's enthusiastic encouragement — she didn't take her glare off the other kit for a second. "I'm gonna destroy you," she whispered, teeth just showing. "You're gonna wake up one night and you're gonna be naked 'cuz I've plucked all your fur out, and then you'll be even uglier. You stupid. Ugly. Baby."
You're dumb stupid babies. "YOU'RE A DUMB STUPID BABY!" Peonykit exploded, rounding on Sunrisekit with her legs stiff and her fur fluffed out to twice its size. Her chest heaved with quick, furious breaths. When the older kits started to set off without them, Peonykit growled and stalked over to her brother and sister. "C'mon," she told them, grabbing them and hauling them out of Shadedsun's fluff. If she could've, she would've held onto them with her forepaws and dragged them behind her; as it was, she just trusted that they would follow. "Grandpa, we're gonna go make sure they don't invade the apprentice's den," she called over her shoulder, sweet but leaving no room for argument; it was clearly a lie — they were just going to invade it better, or at least make sure they were under the paws of the older kits, throwing a spanner into every works — but she was too focused on the task at hand to think about how obvious it was. Usually, her perfect, obedient granddaughter role meant everything to her. But Midnightkit had ruined that.
On the way past, she shoved Midnightkit in the shoulder, letting out a hmph and walking past with her nose in the air.

Oh, she was going to make sure this other kit got it one day. After the shove, she immediately glared at Peonykit; all the kits in SummerClan were such brats anyway, she was so ready to leave the den and head on to becoming an apprentice, and if this ruined her chances...oh she was going to let Sunrisekit know. With a scowl, she turned to their little group.
"If we're going to get in trouble," she announced, before a wicked gleam flashed across her eyes, "we're making sure those nerds get it first! Come on guys, we need a plan of attack and we can't mess this up." Her tail lashed once, almost excited about their little adventure now, "any ideas? Maybe we can trick those idiots into doing something stupid along the way. Maybe trip them into a mud hole or something."
