Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He had been released from the medicine cat's den a few days prior, but he was still struggling to adjust. The horrendous wound that had cut out his left eye was too large to be hidden by his surrounding fur, and and it hurt. It hurt every moment of the day, a constant throb despite the poppy seeds he'd taken; and it hurt to see everyone else flinch from it when they saw him from the wrong side. Snowpaw had never been social, and he had never been skilled, but now everything was a thousand times worse.
His paws skidded on the ground as he chased after the rabbit weaving expertly through the grass in front of him. With a pant and a burst of speed, he veered to the side and cut it off before it could turn, then lunged forward with his paws outstretched. It should have been a great kill.... but missing an eye, his aim was all off, and he struck the ground hard and rolled away while his prey shot to safety. The apprentice moaned as he slowly struggled back to his feet.
A bounce in her step was sure to always be there. Some looked at her as a weird, spiritual little creature; others saw her as a confident molly with lots of love and attention to put out. Her paws glided across the grass, the sun barely dancing through the thick clouds that peppered the sky.
As Rubyshine approached the center of the meadow, the grass seemed to be swaying unnaturally. She squinted at the moving creature in front of her, so consumed in her thoughts she barely noticed a rabbit zooming past her into the trees. She stood there and walked towards the sound of a whining child. As it turned out, it was a child; rather an apprentice, and they did not look like they were in good shape.
"Oh dear!" Rubyshine gasped, noticing the large wound on the apprentice's eye. She felt embarrassed at her outburst and quickly composed herself. "Are- are you okay?" She asked in a worried tone.
Her outburst didn't make him feel any better. He shifted away from her and turned his head so she couldn't see his face, sniffing. "I'm fine," he mumbled, but it was painfully clear he didn't mean it. Everything had fallen apart for him, and he wasn't sure what to do. There was nothing left; he couldn't even hunt!
The ginger molly's stomach clenched. "Oh." she whispered softly. Her heart ached slightly at the poor apprentice, barely able to look at the horrible scar. "I'm-I'm really sorry!" she blurted out.
"Yeah." His voice was subdued, though it still quivered a little. He reached up a forepaw reflexively to hold it in front of his face, but he could only see part of it, and if he moved his paw too far to the side it disappeared entirely. He had never realized how much he could see with just one eye before it was gone.
"I really didn't mean to upset you," she looked down at the tom in pity. Rubyshine could tell that he was uncomfortable, so she moved back to give the apprentice space. Her paw rubbed the front of her leg, uncomfortably looking around.
"It's okay. Everyone says that when they see me. It." His voice was small. He had gone from unnoticed to abhorrent in the blink of an eye - or rather, the loss of one. Snowpaw sniffed and tried to smile. "You know, it's funny... I was always afraid of the dark. And now half the world is always dark."
"No. Thanks, though." He just looked tired. For the moment, his tears had subsided, and there was nothing left within him but a hollow numbness; there was nothing else he could do, that anyone could do. She couldn't give him back his eye. She couldn't make him useful to his clan.
"Huh." She left the word without any pitch or tone. She looked at him blankly for a while, before speaking up again. "Y'know, when I'm down, I do something that always makes me feel better. What do you enjoy doing?" Rubyshine shook her head a few seconds after her question "I'm sorry. I understand this isn't something that can be fixed that easily."
Snowpaw was quiet for several beats. Then: "I like looking up at the stars. And running under them, when the moon is full, running as fast as I can and pretend I'm racing the birds and the hares and the stars."
It felt silly, saying it out loud; but he could imagine the wind whipping his fur and the cool taste on his panting tongue, feel the ground certain beneath his quick paws. Knowing how fast he could run, wondering how much faster he could go... he missed it, sometimes, that feeling of freedom and power.
"I don't see how I can. It's hard to run around now within bumping into things, I'm not used to seeing so little," he clarified. Maybe with time, he would get better, but for now he just felt hopeless.
"Uuh," Rubyshine stuttered. She wasn't used to pessimistic behaviour. After all, she was every the optimist, and wasn't going to stop helping the apprentice. "Well, you can still have fun. Sure, it's difficult, but it's possible if you try!"
"Don't be sorry. It's normal, you know? To feel hopeless. To go through such horrible pain that you feel like nothing can help you." She took a pause, a look in her eyes that seemed to make her look like she was flicking through painful memories. "It's not abnormal."
Was she right? He wanted to believe it, and that would be... reassuring, to not be so alone. Snowpaw stared at his paws, then frowned slightly, and looked up at her again. "You... you sound like you know that. Personally."
