Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Conforming to this new life- one in which he was an anonymous face- came naturally, like slipping into a tailored suit. He wore their scent, practiced their religion, fed their mothers, and cinched the outfit together with a shiny chalcedony shard strung around his neck. Moving on had been an act of survival, and Phantomfox was a master at surviving. However, there were still aspects of his old life that plagued him. What had really happened to Aspenstar? What would become of Sagebristle and Moonblight? Who was this Kier, where did he come from, and how did he sway Aspen so readily to his side?
There was never a moment he managed to banish these unwanted thoughts from his mind. They were there wherever he went, whenever he slept, and while he stalked the territory, unfocused eyes scanning for anything and seeing nothing. He kept moving like this, steadfastly directionless, until an uproar somewhere ahead filled his veins with adrenaline and his paws with speed.
Phantomfox charged down the slope and leaped, claws outstretched and ruined face snarling.
(for my own reference this is post-childbirth, pre-death/disappearance/idk Rosethorn)
Rosethorn would never understand her bad luck with animal encounters and the tom they led her to.
Perhaps it was her fault for venturing outside of Summerclan's territory, but she had gotten the day off from her responsibilities and had wandered after the scents of wildflowers and blooming trees. It wasn't her fault that these smells had masked a badger den, and that a very pissed off badger was on her tail.
It wasn't as bad as the last two times, at least. She could fight now, and once she put a bit of distance between herself and the creature she could turn and defend herself. That was the plan when she made a mad dash through the undergrowth, the angry animal barreling after her- but before she could position herself properly, there was the sound of another entering the fray. Surprised, Rosethorn slowed and stopped, turning to see who had come to her aid.
There were often times when split second decisions had to be made.
Phantomfox, whistling through the feral wind, made one before he even hit the ground- to not let Rosethorn die today. It would have been nothing to turn the other way and let fate play itself out, but there were more forces at play here now. Rosethorn had status, something he now lacked, and SummerClan was dependent on WinterClan, which made her life ever the more valuable to his ambitions.
He crooked a grin that wasn't only malicious, tinted by shades of humor and twisted irony. He didn't need words to communicate the sentiment- you still need me- before the tom lunged headfirst, drawing the badger's attention to him through feints and claws against its head. He was larger and slower on his paws than his ex-lover, but direct contact never stalled him; the snapping jaws in his face enlivened him. It also left the creature vulnerable from its sides and the back of its neck, exposed to attack.
"Starclan and Dark Forest above be damned," Rosethorn spat under her breath, feeling that familiar rush of heat, fury, and fear that Phantomfox's presence now stirred in her. She stood frozen for a few long seconds, debating whether to join in or let the badger have her ex as a midday meal. It wasn't that she thought his life deserved sparing, not really. Truthfully, she would've liked to strangle him herself. But this kind of death was not justice enough for her and her son's suffering, and so Rosethorn plunged into the fray.
Her moons of training under several capable mentors aided her now, alongside the rush of adrenaline. Her claws found purchase in the side of the badger's neck, drawing hot blood that splattered the front of her soft pelt. When the creature whirled on her, she fell back, watching as Phantomfox re-engaged it from the front. A few more blows in this manner- won only from cooperating with her would've-been killer and former mate- felled the angry creature, leaving it screeching on its side.
Rosethorn backed off, letting Phantomfox deliver the killing blow. She held her position on the edge of the clearing, her feet poised to run should the tom turn on her. Part of her wanted desperately to run, to leave as quickly as possible, but she stood stock-still and silent, her blazing amber eyes watching the scene unfold.
